The current leader on money earnings this year has publicly supported the project over the past few years. She's also one of the likely winners of the National Sport Award 2006. * Works on the Gymnastics dome have started before schedule, thanks to the 40 million pesos found (less than 4 million USD) given by the State Congress. They are only waiting the formal authorization of the Secretary for Urban Development. The construction will be adjacent to the volleyball and equestrian venues, with a projected capacity of 3,500 permanent seats, plus temporary seatings. It will feature two separate areas, one for artistic & trampoline, and the other for rhytmic. The late one will also be used as a warm up area for the artistic competition. The purpose is to review the current work of both the Rio 2007 and Guadalajara 2011 Organizing Committees. * So far, the leaders have praised the work done by Guadalajara on the construction schedule of sport venues. The Volleyball dome is expected to be finished by the end of this year, while the Gymnastics dome is going to be started in a few days. Meanwhile, Federal funds for the new velodrome have been secured, with an amount of 30 million pesos (less than 3 million dollars). * Guadalajara 2011 plans to feature seven non olympic sports: karate, squash, bowling, water ski, roller skate, racquetball and Basque pelota. The last two won't be included in Rio 2007, due to the lack of interest of the local public. * Two other cities in the state of Jalisco are under study to be included as venues for 2011. Both will join Ciudad Guzmán (pop. 96,000) and Puerto Vallarta (pop. 220,000). One of them is Lagos de Moreno (pop. 140,000), third city in the state and about one and a half hour from Guadalajara, that is probably going to be chosen as the venue for baseball and softball. Its stadium currently has a permanent capacity of 2,000, plus 4,000 to 6,000 temporary seats that will be added for the Games. Strangely enought, the Volleyball arena for Rio 2007 was also expected to finish by the end of this year...and it won´t be finished by then. The velodrome will maintain its present location, but will suffer important renovations, like the change of its length (from 333m to 250m) and the construction of a indoor track for athletic events around the cycling one. Work will begin in December. * Other venue that have been defined is the softball stadium, in the same complex that the velodrome, since it only needs some minor adjustments in its structure and capacity. It is planned to be used as a baseball training field previous to the Games. * FINA's Diving Super Final is scheduled for November 17 and 18 at the University of Gudalajara Swimming Complex. In addition to the main court it also features 3 warm up courts, separate dressing rooms for male and female athletes, a press rooms, a meeting room for the organizers, a couple of offices, electhronic boards, an audio cabin, VIP lounges and an infirmary. The official inauguration took place last Thursday; here are some pictures. It will be a big, big pity for Brazil if they don't pull it off! every nation biding on an games should know this by now. 4 years is not enough to start work and it has to a be a decades worth of prep work. "Everybody expects things to go well, but from what I hear it's not looking good right now," Pele told local media. "It would be bad for Brazil's image, especially when it's trying host the 2014 World Cup." Brazil is the sole candidate to host soccer's quadrennial championship in 2014, which guaranteed to South America under FIFA's continental rotation policy. The 2010 World Cup will take place in South Africa. If Brazil fails to meet FIFA's extensive list of requirements, however, soccer's governing body can award the event to a country on another continent. Pele said he has not been in close contact with Pan American Games organizers, but that media reports regarding construction delays for the July 13-29 event have caused concerns. "Unfortunately, there is a high possibility the stadiums won't be ready in time," Pele said. "That wouldn't be a good visiting card for Brazil." With less than three months before the opening ceremony, workers have been racing to finish construction of some venues, although organizers guarantee everything will be finished in time. It will host the gymnastics competitions and its capacity will be above 3,500 persons. Adjacent there will be a softball stadium with an approximate cost of 4 million dollars. Anyway, i wonder how it's going the construction of the new football stadium for Guadalajara Chivas (football host and, if i heard well, site of ceremonies). Now it looks like the battle for the 2015 Pan American games will be far more interesting. Colombia capital Bogota have oficialized their bid to these games, and now Venezuela will also make official their bid at the PASO Session at Rio during the games (looks like it will be Caracas again, but i would think on giving the chance to other important city, like Maracaibo). marcocrowgdl Posted May 9, 2007 Report Share Posted May 9, 2007 Well the Chivas Stadium was originally planned to be finished last year to celebrate the club's 100 years along with a league trophy (which they actually won). There have some small modifications to the original project and they expect to finish by the end of next year. I think this stadium isn't considered to be the venue for the ceremonies, which are supposed to take place in the historic Jalisco Stadium. That's a shame, beacuse this project can have another modifications to allow a temporary track around the field that helps with the athletics progam in 2011, instead of the smaller venue they plan to built in a conflictive site. It will be a total of 80 million pesos (about 7 million dollars) to be spend on the construction of the velodrome, to be cosntructed this year, along with the gymnastics complex (to be finishing in July or August), the weightlifting and shooting venues (concluded by December) and the rowing and canoe center (early 2008). Following the concept of the olympics, the flame will be kept on a lantern. From the fire of the flame the torches are lighted during the rotation. The event to light the flame followed similar artistic representation to the daily pre-Hispanic rituals of lighting of the fire. Three actors had rubbed pieces wooden that had given origin to the first spark, having lit the fire. Still following the ritual of the time, the fire was placed inside of a vase, of where a symbolic torch was lighted. It was delivered to the governor of the City of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, and, after that, she passed it to the hands of the president of the Pan American Sport Organization (Odepa), Mario Vázquez Rana; and then to the mayor of Rio De Janeiro, Cesar Maia; and to the president of the Organizing Committee of the Pan-American Games and to the president of the Brazilian Olympic Comittee (COB), Carlos Arthur Nuzman; and finally, to the Mexican athlete Juan Carril, who ran inside the pyramids symbolizing the departing of the Torch to Brazil. I'd like a lot this new logo since its has more style and represent better the conceptof GDL 2011 PanAm Games: * The triangles that form the body are shaped similar to the Americas and its colors are a reference to Mexico as the host country. * The flame is a traditional symbol of this competitions; in addition the blue and yellow are the official colors of the city of Guadalajara and the State of Jalisco. * The hand that holds the torch is resembles the blue agave, the plant used to produce tequila and represents one more time the Mexican culture and the state of Jalisco, where tequila was born. I can´t imagine three cities bidding for the same PAnAm (Santafe de Bogota, X Caracas X San Antonio), but if Rio´s prove to be a huge sucess, other cities may get interested too. The US cities that are fighting now for become the official candidate city for the Pan Am games are Detroit and Miami. Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile and Lima are also interested in hosting the games. As a venezuelan, i have a great hope that Caracas becomes the host city (the Copa America being realized soon here, and with the excelent stadiums built arround here, will become a great help on the bid).
