marcocrowgdl
The only city that presented its bid before the dateline was Guadalajara. Thus, it is the only candidate and is waiting to be announced as the host in May this year.

dave199
Good. That'll take Mexico out of 2016. Not necessarily, That's still a big gap of time for Mexico. Anyways, the American bid will be more heavily favoured than the others come 2016. Doesn't matter if Mexico won PanAm 2011 or not.
Guardian
Well, makes me wonder if the northern part of the Americas is going to be interested in hosting the Pan American Games now. Geez, a win by default by Guadalajara. Also, it will be interesting amongst the South American cities that may put a bid forward for 2015.
dave199
I wonder why no other city was interested in bidding for them besides Guadalajara. I would have though San Antonio would be interested again or any other American city.

I would have though San Antonio would be interested again or any other American city. Why would a nation, like the USA, really want to bid for a "low sporting event", when it has hosted the biggest and well-known multi-sport event more times than any country in the world? We know that as the Olympic Games and the USA has hosted EIGHT of them so far. Never mind that 2016 could be the nation's next chance of hosting it again. Canada could put a bid forward in the future, but with only Winnipeg hosting it twice so far, it could be an uphill battle for the COC to consider it. Well I'm sure there are 2nd or 3rd tier American cities that would love to host and would benefit from the Pan Am games.

I would have though San Antonio would be interested again or any other American city. I'm just guessing but maybe San Antonio's fiscal picture isn't too healthy nor will it appear better in the next few years -- which is why it passed. That, plus the demands of PASOC (like those of the IAAF) may become untenable for San Antonio, and maybe a change of administration that wasn't really interested in the Games. Faster
I would assume that 2015 would be heading to Kingston or Havana, followed by Cali, Santiago or whomever in 2019 with Canada or the USA getting it in 2023.
marcocrowgdl
GUADALAJARA 2011 UPDATE First venue works began July 20, with the construction of the volleyball dome and it is planned to be finished by December or January. This facility will have a cost of 40 million pesos (like 3.8 million dollars) and will have a 5,000 capacity which can be increased temporarily. The site is adjacent to the planned Gymnastics complex and across the street from the venue for Equestrian events. Gymnastics venues is planned to be built next year along with the Handball venue. I wish I could have some decent photos of the project, but at this point local media has not published good ones. It is planned that one of this venues also host judo combats, while the other can feature wrestling. The Games are provisionally scheduled between October 14 and 30, 2011. Other cities that will serve as venues include: Puerto Vallarta, site for triathlon and sailing, famous tourist destination and the second biggest city in the state of Jalisco, with a rapid growing population that reached 300 thousand last year. Chapala Lake, 30 miles south of Guadalajara, it is the biggest water body in the country, with a big colony of US and Canadian citizens. Water Ski is scheduled in this location. Ciudad Guzmán, the state's 5th city, with a population of nearly 100,000, birthplace of some of Mexico's greatest artists. Rowing and Canoe races will take place in a nearby lake, popular among local tourists.

marcocrowgdl
The Organizing Committee speak today about the possibility to inaugurate the first venue for the 2011 PanAmerican Games at the end of the week, with the presence of Iridia Salazar, bronze medalist in Athens 2004 in Tae Kwon Do. The Tae Kwon Do gym is now finished, with an approximate cost of 5 million pesos (500 thousand dollars), is located at the Revolucion Sport Complex which will also feature the Squash, Beach Volley and Roller Skate competitions. I promise I'll take pictures in a few days.
marcocrowgdl
Just a quick update: * Works in the volleyball dome continue and they are expected to be finished by December 2006 or early 2007. In the mean time, the Organizing Committee announced that this venue will host the qualifying Karate tournament for Río 2007 as the first warming event. * The Mexican Swimming Federation is looking a proper venue to host FINA's Diving Cup Final, since Mexico City probably can't host the event. They consider Guadalajara to be their best option and if local sport authorities accept the task, the event will take plae in late november at the University of Guadalajara. * It is almost official that Mexico is going to host Copa America (World's oldest soccer tournament) in 2011. Some officials from Mexican Football Federation declared that they considere three or four cities to host matches, including Guadalajara which could have Brazil's group since there's a great support for the Cariocas since FIFA's 1970 World Cup. *Here's a render of Chivas Stadium, which possibly be used for the 2011 PanAm. It will have a capacity of 45-50,000 and it is under construction.

marcocrowgdl
So far it is expected that the 26 sports that will be in the London 2012 program, will also be featured in the 2011 PanAm Games. Also there's a list of sports that can be on the program by "invitation" up to 7 (I read it somewhere, though it may change). Here's the list of that sports: Squash - included in 2007 Karate - included in 2007 Bowling - included in 2007 Racquetball Roller Sports (Speed & Artistic) - included in 2007 Water Ski - included in 2007 Pelota Vasca (Jai Alai) Futsal - I doubt if it counts as a different sport but it will be played in 2007 Softball - now in the program, but not sure for 2011. Baseball - now in the program, but not sure for 2011.
