In its Feb. 8 edition, which hits newsstands Wednesday, the sports magazine projects the Canadian team to finish with 30 medals at the Games - 10 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze. Germany is predicted to lead the way with 35 medals, including 11 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze. Sports Illustrated thinks the Americans will finish third with 27 medals; seven gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze. The Germans topped the medal count at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy with 29 medals. Faster Posted February 3, 2010 Report Share Posted February 3, 2010 The only other time a country has finished above 30 medals, there was another to do it. Germany in 2002 and the Americans. I think 35 is too high for the Germans, I don't think the loses in biathlon can be made up by their improvements in alpine skiing. I also think that Canada will be the victim of American patriotism in these pikes, since Canada and the USA go head to head as medal favourites in men's aerials, women's moguls, men's 500m, 1000m, 1500m, relay speed skating, men's 500m, 1000m, 1500m and relay short track, men's and women's SBX, men's figure skating, ice dance and a few others I can't think of. They are weaker in nordic combined, speed skating, cross country skiing, and biathlon and the competition in their traditional dominance sports like sliding is weakened. They're strong in winter sport, though not quite as strong as the Germans, but the home-field advantage will definitely come in handy. Will Korea dominate speed skating like in Torino? Nordic combined is unpredictable because of the 'team' aspect to the individual races. I have no idea what is going to happen at those events. And you will have to make up for the probably loss of Curling as a medal sport for the USA. Just like Canada should gain Alpine Skiing but loss Cross Country Skiing. And honestly, I find them quite reasonable. I would change gold and silver in the nordic combined (Gold to the US and silver to Germany) and I am not so sure the gold in Womens Skeleton. Further, I find the 1-2 in Mens double in Luge a bit too optimistic. In Biathlon they played with the German athletes. Jonsson and Olofsson-Zidek (both SWE) are the first candidates for gold. But Swedes used to fail when it matters, at least Magdalena Forsberg did at the Olympics, and the Germans are the first to succeed, not the Russians. Sweden will likely win 4 as well, so that leaves 5 left over for the rest of the field. The dominance it picks for Germany in women's biathlon is unreasonable. I doubt Norway will be held without a medal. I just can't see Germany winning 7 medals and Sweden winning the other 5. Norway and Russia will win medals. And how do you pick no individual Russian to win a medal but than the Russians to win relay gold. It seems counter-intuitive. I think 5 is reasonable for Germany, you are correct in saying that Germans tend to raise to the occasion. Probably 5 for Sweden, 1 for Norway and 4 for Russia. I talked solely about Womens Biathlon, not the Mens competition. All athletes will be better in Whistler. Still I think the Germans are superior to the Russian. I agree with SI about the relay though, but the individual events are a catfight between Sweden and Germany. Berger as an outside chance. Jonsson is such a good shooter! Germany will dominate like no nation has before. I see them with 6 Luge medals (they will sweep Women's Luge), sweep the Golds in bobsled and put two other German teams on the podium for a total of 5 bobs medals.
