Anyone know what happens to it between 1:44 PM and the Opening Ceremonies?

That's used as both buffer time (in case something goes wrong with the torch relay...e.g. protesters delayed the torch's arrival for an hour in Toronto) and hibernation time until the Opening.

So Vancouver won't have an "Olympic Flame Update" as Atlanta and Salt Lake did it during their opening ceremonies, showing where the flame was located by then on its journey to the stadium. You see, I'm soaking up every information about the opening ceremony. ;)

Yeah, I thought they usually ran the torch relay all the way up until the end of the Opening Ceremony.

Or do they expect around 7 plus hours (or whatever amount time there is between 1:44 and the end of the ceremony) of buffer time?

Flame updates are lame, I hated those. Vancouver is going to follow the footsteps of Athens and Beijing of a theatrical cauldron lighting.

And keep in mind that David Atkins has told us that the Vancouver 2010 Ceremonies will be very theatrical, perhaps even moreso than previous Ceremonies, and they will merge protocol with the theatrics.
