I'm legit expecting Australia will step in for 2026.  There will be a groundswell of CG support while the Gold Coast clusterfuck is on and we'll see Perth or Adelaide put their hand up.  Realistically we'll get them unless Kuala Lumpur puts in a bid.  The UK is out, NZ refuses to spend big bucks on anything bar rugby events, Singapore doesn't seem interested at all.  South Africa is a big no - and I doubt Nigeria/Sri Lanka/India will put in another bid anytime soon.

New Zealand has looked into the CWGs over and over again and no doubt this will come up over the next two weeks.

The conclusion will be the same...It's not worth the $1billion needed to host it.

That much? Sure Glasgow didn't spend anywhere near that (I accept exchange rates might be a bit odd though). Was watching the test match the other day & wondered if you could plonk an athletics track in Eden Park with a platform - like Glasgow did.

Eden Park now has a "No Build - No Modification" caviet on it now...It only has twenty years of life in it. Irony is the Gold Coast CWGs were Auckland's for the taking. GC was going to pull out if Auckland firmed up it's bid, but just couldn't convince local and Central governments on venues - North Habour Stadium was going to have the track placed on it. Eden Park would've hosted Opening and Closings as well as the Sevens.

Also, the lean is towards Christchurch hosting - if ever - the games.

Hampden Park only works for athletics because it has an oval shape (with a lot of space behind the goals.) A rectangular stadium cannot manage the same platform solution unless it has no ends.

Errr, no actually. If you read the very first post in the very first ever Gold Coast 2018 thread you'll see that any notion of that sort was only wishful thinking on Auckland's part. See below:

A SNEAKY move by New Zealand authorities to hijack the 2018 Commonwealth Games bid from the Gold Coast has been exposed.

Auckland Mayor John Banks has been caught out claiming that Queensland officials had agreed to scrap the Gold Coast bid.

Mr Banks, who heads a newly-merged super council, yesterday refused to comment to The Bulletin.

But he previously told the New Zealand Herald that officials in Brisbane had offered to step aside in favour of their 'sister city'.

Acting Premier Paul Lucas last night came out swinging against Mr Banks and other Kiwi supporters.

Mr Lucas said Premier Anna Bligh would lead a trade mission to India early next month to meet officials from the Commonwealth Games Federation.

"I couldn't think of a better place in the entire Commonwealth that has the advantage of having top facilities, a combined Gold Coast/Brisbane population almost the same size as New Zealand itself and is a tourism mecca," said Mr Lucas.

"Of course Auckland wants us to withdraw -- the Gold Coast is the front-runner. I've got news for them -- it's a race we intend to win.

"Gold Coast, with a population equal to Tasmania, is the only non-capital city in Australia that has the capacity to host this event."

Mr Lucas said it was important to remember that Commonwealth Games bids do not begin and end in capital cities.

Your Say

"we have your jobs, we have your women, we have your property, we have your businesses, now we want your Games"

Palmy Paul

"Judging by the number of Kiwis on the Gold Coast I think there would be broad support in New Zealand for the Gold Coast Games bid as well," he said.

Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke said he had been contacted by New Zealand media about reports the city was pulling out.

"They keep calling us Brisbane but they're way off the mark," said Cr Clarke.

"We've got a better climate and better credentials.

"Somebody wrote to me to say thanks us for pulling out but the Gold Coast will not be stepping aside."

Cr Clarke said there was very little chance that the Australian FIFA World Cup bid for 2018 would be successful and he has called on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to commit funding to the Gold Coast games bid.

The Auckland move was dismissed by the chairman of the Gold Coast bid for the games, Bob Gordon.

"They've don't have the accommodation," he said.

"What they're going to have to do is lease cruise ships from Europe to go down there.

"Their harbour is a poor imitation of Sydney harbour."

Auckland City Council has agreed to bankroll a $325,000 feasibility study to kick-start a bid to win the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Cashed-up Nigeria, which has put up capital Abuja as its bid city, is the only other competitor after losing its bid to Glasgow for the 2014 games.

Anyway, onto the main topic. I have no objections whatsoever to Canada being given the dibs to host 2030. Hope they do get it. Definitely fitting. And the CWGs NEED Canada to host - might as well be a hosting where they really want to do it, whereas they haven't really been inclined to lately up till now.

I'd guess Toronto would be the most likely host. And be a good anchor to have some events in Hamilton to honour the centennial.

Which seems likely, considering Hamilton's disinterest. With the limited number of sports on the CWG program, there really is no need to share events. However, iirc from 2010, Hamilton proposed soccer/football as an event. If that is the plan for 2030, they could put the soccer at the same stadium it was held in for the Pan Ams (in Hamilton).

And this current money wasting "we can save the world" full of s*** Govt will be dumb enough to waste $20 million in studies to have admit to something we already knew - pointless to host anymore.

Given how NZ's previous hostings are generally considered among the best ones, & Glasgow showed you don't have to break the bank Delhi-style to host well, why are you so strongly opposed to NZ hosting again? Were you against the hosting of the Rugby WC in 2011 or is it just the multi-sport events that you don't think NZ should touch?

Is Wellington no longer big enough for the Commonwealth Games? They have the main stadium, an aquatics center and an outdoor velodrome. They need to build a new arena as a music venue anyway, and that should be the only new sporting construction required apart from some refurbishment of existing venues.

Rugby World Cup was a Nationwide event and the nation was happy to pay for it...Just as it is willing to do for the up coming Womens FIFA WC bid.

The CWGs were hosted in the 10 core sports era, not the mega games era it is now. The expectation to provide Olympic sized facilities weren't there. And with that , the cost. Athletes were happy to live in university hostel like facilities. I can remember the 1990 dining hall being an enormous canvas hanger like structure. Today you can see what an amazing venue the Gold Coast has provided. but at a price.  It's also seen as what could be the future...Australia and UK swapping the games back and forth. There is every chance the 2026 games will be back in Australia if Malaysia doesn't want them. You can pretty much count South Africa out forever.

2030 could see a very strong and forceful bid from Canada.

In the unlikely event NZ does bid, Auckland would be the only serious candidate and there is a stigma attached to that. The rest of the country can't stand Auckland, and with good reason...It has driven the cost of living up, and put strain on the government coffers as infrastructure building keeps falling behind.

Behind the scenes has Toronto being actively lobbied into placing a bid. Hamilton would likely get a sport or two as well.

The athletics stadium is the obvious stumbling block for any Toronto bid for either the Commonwealth Games or the Olympics. Unless the Commonwealth Games Federation accepts a small stadium with temporary bleachers I can't see it happening.

So the bidding deadline for the 2026 Commonwealth Games was New Year's eve and so far we heard nothing from the Commonwealth Games federation, Does anyone have inside info from the federation?

Toronto should move their 2026 FIFA World Cup Games to Rogers Centre and Demolished and rebuild the BMO Field so that will be the Commonwealth and Olympic Stadium 90,000 seats down to 60,000 after the games in a Stadium Australia like stadium.

Toronto FC doesn't want a convertible athletics stadium. They want a dedicated football/soccer stadium like the one they already have.

When Impact du Montreal play exceptional games at the Stade Olympique they use temporary stands at the sides and ends. (You can see the modifications in this video: https://youtu.be/_bF3g4uN4rg?t=39) But they similarly have no desire to leave Stade Saputo for the Olympic stadium except for matches like CONCACAF Champions League finals or MLS Cup despite the availability of a huge convertible athletics stadium essentially for free.

The athletics stadium is being converted to a soccer stadium with the track being removed. A Toronto bid is dead, imo.

So if Canada does host in 2026 would most likely be Toronto, They would have 5 1/2 years to build a Commonwealth/Olympic Stadium the issue is the FIFA World Cup in Toronto and the games major venue would FIFA want a oval and with ceremonies issues would they do what Glasgow did and have say the Opening Ceremony and Closing ceremony at different places say Opening Ceremony at Rogers Centre and Commonwealth/Olympic Stadium (BMO Field) for the Closing ceremony  or if Toronto get;s the Commonwealth Games give up the FIFA Games to Vancouver BC Place Stadium.

Why would Toronto build such a stadium?

  1. Toronto will not want to build a white elephant, so a stadium with no plan for its legacy use(s) is not possible.
  2. None of the teams in Toronto want a stadium with a track in it. Even a trackless oval-shaped stadium capable of supporting a platform like Hampden Park would be a bad choice for revenue teams like Toronto FC and the Toronto Argonauts due to the distance from the goals at the ends.

Should Hamilton bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games?
A past council rejected the idea of making a play for the international event even though the original British Empire Games started in Hamilton in 1930.

NEWS 05:40 PM by Matthew Van Dongen  The Hamilton Spectator
https://www.thespec.com/news-story/9220905-should-hamilton-bid-to-host-the-2030-commonwealth-games-/

Amateur sport boosters will try to convince a new crop of Hamilton councillors to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games less than two years after local politicians rejected the idea.

City council refused in 2017 to even study the notion of hosting the international games despite encouragement from Canadian organizers who noted the first event — then called the British Empire Games — was hosted in Hamilton in 1930 on the site of what is now Tim Hortons Field.

Now, a sports coalition dubbed "Hamilton 100" will resurrect the anniversary games pitch to a newly elected council with five new political faces in the hopes of getting a better reception.

"Hamilton is to the Commonwealth Games as Athens is to the Olympics," says an introductory letter to council signed by P.J. Mercanti, CEO of convention centre operator Carmen's Group. "This potential once-in-forever project could transform the city and provide a lasting legacy that the community would enjoy for generations."

By comparison, a modern-day games would likely be a $1-billion-plus, multi-government undertaking attracting 6,000-plus athletes to the city to compete in up to 17 sports like swimming, cycling, and track and field.

Mercanti's letter notes McMaster University, Sport Hamilton and private businesses have jumped on the Hamilton 100 bandwagon and plan to "explore the self-financing" of a Games bid. "Our community coalition feels very confident in our ability to impressively bid — and win — the 2030 Commonwealth Games," he wrote.

Mercanti is also part of a consortium that has expressed interest in redeveloping aging city-owned venues like the hockey arena and convention centre into a downtown commercial and entertainment "precinct." Mercanti has said in the past a prospective redevelopment could tie in to a 2030 games bid.

It remains to be seen if a majority of city councillors are willing to get in the game.

Mayor Fred Eisenberger has said in the past he would like to explore hosting the anniversary games.

But other longtime councillors like Sam Merulla and Tom Jackson admitted to "games fatigue" following a tumultuous 2015 Pan Am Games.

That event helped Hamilton build a new $145-million football and soccer stadium with provincial cash — but not before late construction and ongoing repair issues spawned a lawsuit between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the consortium that built that stadium, and two levels of government that was only recently settled.

The search for a Pan Am stadium site also spurred the infamous purchase and razing of several Barton-Tiffany neighbourhood homes and businesses for no reason, after the Tiger-Cats announced the site was not suitable.

The city has also experienced Commonwealth disappointment via failed bids in 2010 and 2014.

Ironically, council nixed a study of another bid in 2017 despite encouraging hints from Canadian Commonwealth Games officials. CEO Brian MacPherson told The Spectator there was a "natural feeling" among international games organizers that centennial events "should go to the birthplace."

Games boosters are expected to address councillors at a meeting March 20.
