Recommended Posts

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge has appointed Ms Nawal El Moutawakel to chair the Coordination Commission for the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016. El Moutawakel will lead a 17-strong, multinational team of men and women, who will be responsible for assisting the Rio 2016 Organising Committee during the period leading up to the Olympic Games, as well as monitoring the progress of preparations.

An IOC member since 1998, El Moutawakel joined the IOC Executive Board in 2008, the same year that she was appointed as the Chair of the 2016 Olympic Games Evaluation Committee. She is the former Minister of Youth and Sport in Morocco and an Olympic champion, having won gold in the 400m hurdles in the Games of the XXIII Olympiad in Los Angeles in 1984. She also chaired the Evaluation Commission for the 2012 Olympic Games.

The members of the Coordination Commission, also announced today, comprise IOC members from five continents with wide-ranging Olympic Games experience gained either from work on former IOC Evaluation or Coordination Commissions or with previous Games Organising Committees.

"Nawal El Moutawakel is ideally suited to lead our highly experienced and multifaceted team of experts," said IOC President Rogge. "As an Olympic gold medallist and Chair of the IOC Evaluation Committee for the last two Olympiads, she knows the Games inside and out, is well-acquainted with the Rio organisers and has the experience and leadership abilities to ensure that Rio is 100 per cent ready to host a fantastic Games in 2016," added Rogge.

El Moutawakel said she was honoured to become the first women to chair the Coordination Commission. "I am delighted to have been named as Chair of the Commission and am confident our team will help Rio deliver a memorable Summer Games in 2016," she said. "Having chaired the Evaluation Committee for the 2016 Games, I have first-hand knowledge of the many strengths that Rio and Brazil have to offer, and together we will strive to showcase that to the world in six years’ time."

Next step presidency, but Oswald, Bach and co. will be tough to beat. Although I think she will do a Rio and get the votes.

No, that's a way to put her out the presidential way in 2013, as she will still be at head of Coordination Commission till 2016...

So next step, vice-presidency and may be she could run for the presidency in 2025 !

Not an insurmountable hurdle, wasn't Rogge still chairman of the Athens Coordination Committee till 2001, and only stepped aside for Oswald when he was elected IOC pres?

Actually, wasn't Rogge still chairman of the Athens Coordination Committee till 2001, and only stepped aside for Oswald when he was elected IOC pres?

appears to be the case

An IOC member in Switzerland since 1991, IOC Executive Board member and also President of the International Rowing Federation (FISA), OSWALD was Chairman of the IOC Coordination Commission for Athens 2004, having taken over from ROGGE when the latter was elected IOC President.

El Moutawakel will be president someday. It's just a question of when. She's very experienced, obviously very well-liked and she's a woman from a Muslim nation. What more could you want?

quote from Rio Organising Committe

According to Carlos Arthur Nuzman, President of the Rio 2016 Organising Committee, an excellent partnership will be established between Rio 2016 and the Coordination Commission. He said: “I am very pleased with the appointment of Nawal El Moutawakel given her outstanding professionalism and experience as the IOC’s Evaluation Commission Chairperson for the 2016 race. Within that role she successfully coordinated a thorough and precise evaluation of our ability to deliver the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016. The IOC has appointed a Commission of tremendously high quality individuals whose collective expertise and familiarity with the Olympic Movement will be a real strength for our work together moving forward. The Rio 2016 Organising Committee is ready to begin work together.”

IOC Coordination Commission starts working with Rio 2016 Organizing Committee and the three levels of the government

Three days of many meetings – with visits to competition venues and units of the Pacification Police – marked the beginning of the joint work of International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission for 2016 Olympiads, Rio 2016 Organizing Committee and the Federal, State and Municipal administrations.

On Tuesday, January 19th, the president of the Coordination Commission Nawal El Moutawakel, reaffirmed to be convinced that Rio 2016 Games will provide a unique experience to all participants, and announced that the next IOC visit is scheduled for the month of May, when all the 18 Committee members should be coming to Rio.

Appointed by IOC on January 13 to chair the Coordination Commission, Nawal El Moutawakel arrived in Rio just 4 days later, accompanied by the IOC Executive Director of Olympic Games Gilbert Felli; project manager Jennifer O´Brien and design, planning and control consultant Grant Thomas. “We discussed how the organization of Rio 2016 Games will be managed and I am convinced that this is very promising partnership. There is no time to loose when it comes to the organization of the Games. Rio 2016 is working fast and wonderful Olympic Games will be delivered if this pace is kept. We are all sailing on the same boat”, Nawal said, explaining that the Coordination Commission is formed by Olympic Games experts. “We are here to help and stage a highly successful event”.

Well, the IOC personnel are really taking part on organization of the games. Otherwise, FIFA organizing committee seems to be sleeping about World Cup Brazil 2014.

I think they'll probably wake up before the final deadline for the begining stadium renovation/construction works. That's in March, isn't it?

It's good to see that are wasting no time with the preparations. Nawal has always seemed to be an extremely reliable person, I'm sure she'll do great. And I hope this has positive reflexes on her career with the IOC.

Coordination commission begins final visit to Rio

The IOC’s Coordination Commission for the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, Rio 2016, today began its final visit (11 – 13 April) to the Brazilian host city. Led by its Chair, Nawal El Moutawakel, the Commission’s visit comes only four months before Rio 2016 hosts the Olympic Games for the first time in South America.

During its visit this week, the Commission will tour a number of Games venues, many of which have already held successful test events; meet with the local Government authorities; be updated by the Rio 2016 Organisers about different areas of Games preparations and will close with a press conference. These updates will look at areas as diverse as athlete services, sport, media services, the Paralympic Games, venues, Games operations, and the spectator experience.
