The Best Job In The World?

Recommended Posts

Ben Southall, the Briton who won 'the best job in the world', has had a brush with death after being stung by a poisonous jellyfish.

And his confession that he had 'a crazy 24 hours' after receiving what could have been a fatal sting is in contrast to his brief to tell the world about all the wonderful sights and sounds that Queensland has to offer.

Ben, 34, from Petersfield, Hampshire, beat nearly 35,000 applicants from around the world earlier this year to be awarded the £70,000 six-month job as 'caretaker' of a string of islands on the famous Great Barrier Reef.

But the seas off Queensland can also be filled with danger with threats from sharks, poisonous stonefish - and the irukandji jellyfish, which has just given him a painful reminder that it lurks in the turquoise waters of the reef.

"I was enjoying a post-Christmas jet ski session with some friends at a quiet beach on Hamilton Island,' he wrote on the blog which he has to update frequently as part of his job touring the reef islands to promote their beauty.

'As I climbed off the back of the ski and onto the beach (I) felt a small bee-like sting on my forearm.'

What he didn't realise at the time was that he had been stung by the jellyfish, which is no bigger than a fingernail.

He went on to describe the effects as the poison spread through his body:

'I was feeling pretty hot and sweaty, had a headache and felt pretty sick too with pain in my lower back and a tightness in the chest and a really high blood pressure.

'I had a minor brush with what can be a very serious jellyfish.'

Ben said he was now feeling 100 per cent again, but added: 'Horrible incident. Lesson learnt - always wear a stinger suit' - a reference to a rubber diving suit which he says should be worn during the summer season when the deadly jellyfish are about.
