Helsinki 2005

Recommended Posts

Starting on August 6th. and ending on August 14th., the world's best athletes in the track and field events will gather in the Finnish capital. This will be the second time the city will host the World Athletics Championship. I, for one, would like to see that Jamaican, who is the world record holder in the men's 100m event.

As for the official website, here it is:

10th. IAAF World Athletics Championships

Asafa Powell will not be running.  I just read he pulled his groin.

Not good. Now, some people may start thinking that drugs may have a role in that world record run.

Anyway, it could be a "cake-walk" for the USA again here.

Yep, the Champs couldn't have had a better start for the Spanish athletes, since Paquillo Fernández and Juan Manuel Molina have won the silver and bronze medals respectively in 20 km race walk:

Gold - Pérez Jefferson  ECU  1:18:35

Silver - Fernández Francisco Javier  ESP 1:19:36

Bronze - Molina Juan Manuel  ESP  1:19:44

And here's how the medal table looks now:

2   ECUADOR 1 0 0 1

3   UNITED STATES 1 0 0 1

It was amazing to watch the Ethiopians in the women's 10,000 on the final lap.  As soon as the bell rang, they just exploded away from the pack!

Handed out medals already? Geez, I guess I better watch more of this event.  :)

New Zealander Beatrice Faumuina, former woman’s discus world champion is through to the finals. Adrian Blincoe and Nicholas Willis in the 1500m are both through to the semis and Kimberly Smith came 15th in the woman’s 10,000m, putting 3rd in the Commonwealth going into the games next year in Melbourne.

Still can't wait till the woman’s shot put, go Valerie Vili

I just watched the Discus final and it was great (although the Spanish Mario Pestano only did 62.75 m); that Lithuanian guy won the gold in the very last throw!

About the Spanish athletes, María Vasco ended 4th in 20 Kilometres Race Walk; and we have 3 guys qualified for the 3000 Metres Steeplechase final (Antonio David Jiménez, José Luis Blanco and Luis Miguel Martín).

While Justin Gatlin destroyed the 100 metres field.

Too bad that Powell didn't race here.

I don't think Powell would have beaten him either, but it would have made for more of a race.

Powell has been the best all year, including breaking the world record, there was a good chance he would have won

I'm surprised Arron didn't win the Women's 100.  She's looked so good all year.  That was really good time for Lauryn Williams though

Arron always looks good coming up to an Olympic or World Championship final; but unfortunately she just doesn't seem to have it in wininng a medal in the big ones. :(

So far three major European nations without a medal:

Italy, England and Greece.

Italy has still Giuseppe GIBILISCO as a medal contenter.

England can rely on their sprinters, relays and Paula Radcliffe in the Marathon event.

But Greece...???

It seems to me, that they have finished their doping program. But without doping, Greek athletes are not able to win a medal.

:laughlong:  :D  :P    :hmm:

Powell may have broken the world record, but Gatlin beat him when they met and handled the pressure of Athens far better. You cannot deny that Gatlin is a worthy champion.

Bad day for the Spanish athletes: Mayte Martínez finished 5th in the 800 meters final while the guys from 3000 m steeplechase only finished in 6th, 11th and 14th place respectively.

Will we win any other medals? We're only 10th in the medal table  .
