From the live webcast -- these seem to have been some of the alternative logos in the design contest:

I like the third and the fourth from the left in the second row from above the best. Our "wreath of feathers" isn't listed.

some interesting (and more traditional) logos indeed.

I have to say, I like it, even by itself (which I didn't when I saw the fuzzy pic a few days ago).

It's a very well produced piece of word art. The elements of reflection between the o's, the 2 and the c and the s, and the h and i's are quite snowflake-esque in their multiple planes of symmetry. And it is clean and crisp and I would say quite wintery.

I think this could, or at least has the potential to be the best winter logo since Salt Lake if it's used wisely.

Good job Sochi. I wasn't expecting after seeing the fuzzy image to like it straight off when it was released officially, but I do.

One thing, I'm still not sure about the .ru and I think it'd look better without it. But I understand this is a long-term branding excersise for an upcoming region rather than branding for a one off event (which is what London's logo, for example, is about). I think after the Games the 2014 and Olympic rings will be dropped and the resort of Sochi will have its own brand which will, because of the Olympics, be recognised the world over. Clever stuff.

totally agree rob - i really like it - it is fresh and brave.

most logos become secondary after the look of the games is rolled out. look at beijing the logo was hardly in evidence - the beijing font was everywhere along the lucky clouds but the logo was a minor element.

it seems to me that prior to london (and now sochi) that the logo was decided with 5/4 years to go and then it had to be rather awkwardly shoe horned into the overall look of the games. london and sochi are doing the reverse (imo) and designing a brand from the get go.

I think this is going to be one of those games where the look will be remembered, not the emblem. I don't hate it, but I was expecting something more. It's unimpressive in its 'basic' version. I need to see it used in variety of ways.

It certainly follows the path that London 2012 created (i.e. a new approach to creating Olympic emblems). Based on what I've read so far, the Sochi brand team is cautious -- obviously trying to avoid the shock value that London 2012 had, hence the rather lukewarm response.

IOC President Jacques Rogge said:

“I would like to congratulate Sochi 2014 on the launch of their new brand. Every Olympic Games has an emblem and look that crystallizes the identity of those Games for all time and Sochi is no exception.

“The Sochi 2014 emblem will become one of the most visible and recognised marks for people of all ages from around the world over the next few years, especially as Sochi 2014 has made a conscious effort to link its brand to the digital generation.

“Thanks to the growth of social media, the Sochi brand will no doubt spread like never before through these online channels reaching the youth of the world quickly and in a format that they appreciate.”

I must said this goes down as the Olympic logo yet for a conservative olympic logo fan. However, I would love to see how they "fill-in" the logo like London did. That definately help tell if the logo's theme will be a success. I would have prefered the crown but we'll see how this goes.

So refreshing and complex in it's simplicity, symmetries, and curves.

The angles in the S and 2 are strict but playful, reminds me of skiing...same with the h to h curves.

I like the rectangles in the solid O and 0

.....also funny to say SO-20.......and SO-2014.

The negative spaces between everything are very interesting and particularly the rigid lines created between the HI-14, so many creative possibilities in these lines.

In English the ru can be a question........ARE YOU?

Sochi2014.........ru?

Hi 14!

I'm trying to like it, but it's too much of a stretch. It needs a lot of dressing up to look presentable/memorable. This is why I think Torino had arguably the best this decade, it combined modern curved minimalism but it had "meat on it's bones", i.e. it could stand on it's own silhouette.

I just realized how much this new Sochi logo makes me think about the Russian constructivist art movement, almost like a subtle hint at the Soviet yesteryear.

It kinda reminds me of Mexico 68. Not an actual emblem, but still has clean lines and a good feel to it. I don't love it, but I'm far from hating it. It's about what I expected from Russia, to be honest. I'm looking forward to what they do with it. I'll start playing around with it myself and see what I can come up with.

Yes! Torino's entire "look of the games" was fantastic, I still like to look it over. Cannot say the same for Vancouver (except the cute mascots) though Whistler is of my favorite places to ski. It is sooooooo beautiful in BC, I was expecting more (or maybe less :P ) from the visual campaign.

I couldn't agree more with your last sentence.

It's the same feeling I had with London logo at first, ugly... However, London logo was a picture and I don't hate it anymore. This is only letters, and they're nice but I think it needs something more. BTW, I'd say .ru is not necesary on the logo...

If we continue this way, Rio might have a logo like this:

RIO DE JANEIRO 2016

(and the rings below)

 The candidature logo wasn't brilliant but better that this one for me.

I can't shut up about this. So I'm sorry if I'm posting too much. :o

I was so intrigued by my constructivism revelation I had to find some examples to share of things from the constructivist era or designed in that style. Russian constructivism really brought typography to the forefront in art. It was kind of a way to distance words from their meanings and question writing. The movement was largely reactionary to the impressionist movement which was essentially "softening art beyond tangibility and practicality", thereby defeating art's purpose to serve the people. It really went with the whole socialist movement.

The whole sochi.ru2014 thing is so much like an updated, slightly less severe version.

If I'm not mistake, they said that they will announce the logo for international audience on Vancouver 2010.. Hope they'll add picture above the present logo... The Triangles on their website look very nice, hope they can make something from this triangles, but in case they don't put anything new on vancouver 2010, for me sochi 2014 have a very clever message, hi 14.. sochi ru ?? Ru olympic ?? and etc.. a clever logo, yet it's only a word without any picture, better than london 2012 :)

Thanks for the pictures garudo! I think I like the logo a lot better in context with the backgrounds. I think it may take a while to grow on me though. At least it's nothing outrageous like London 2012. :P

On the first row, the first design reminds me of the Iranian NOC logo, the third kinda sorta reminds me of the Squaw Valley 1960 look, and the sixth one totally looks like Montreal. The second and third designs on the last row remind me of designs the have on packages for recordable VHS tapes. Otherwise, nonr of them really stand out for me.

Its all personal taste I guess.

Im a bit bemussed as to why people look at this logo and say they like it, and in the same sentance diss Londons logo. Londons logo has a personality and a totally distinctive shape. This is just type, is it the fact this is a more safe colour, where Londons launch showed a vibrant colour palette? I dont find anything new or challenging about this logo, its fine but it certainly aint blazing a trail and stimulating passionate debate like Londons.

The background helps, but honestly...

Block letters. We ask for a logo for the WOG and we get block letters.

Yeah, the reflection of 14 and hi is cute, but the novelty wears off pretty fast when the rest is so stark and, quite frankly, dull.

Don't HATE it, but boy, I'm underwhelmed.

I hate it. There's nothing to this other that someone in an office typing Sochi 2014.ru in a posh way and making it blue. Thats my honest opinion.

I didn't like the London logo (i do now), but i hate this.

Also, this whole "digital age" thing, it doesn't make sense, this looks more "retro" than digital.

Regardless of personal tastes, I think they are creating a very stong brand.

It doesn't bother me to be an all-type logo. A brand isn't only constructed by a logo...

Have a look at all of those below:
