baron-pierreIV
Cause of train crash: engineer was subjected to the slight change in the logo...from the fuzzy 2024..uh-oh...typo to the more correct one.
flamey
What is the source of this photo? this blogpost. the guy on the pic is one of the more known bloggers in Russia anyway, apparently the presentation DID happen last night, but because of the train tragedy there was no live coverage, and the press conference was moved to today (11am Moscow time, that's in 8 hrs from now). here are a couple of photos: the rest of 'em are here. so, there you go. just accept it as is
oakydoky
So, now that the logo has been revealed here's some thoughts. Pros: 1. Absolutely does it's job of stating concisely the location of the games and the year. 2. It can have infills added allowing corporate sponsors to capitalise on it. 3. For an unknown city like Sochi, the logo does relate the city to the country - Russia, and so serves an important tourist/marketing tool. Cons: 1. Personally, my initial response is one of being underwhelmed. I think because it is a font logo it is so very different from Olympic traditions whereby a nice image is presented. I don't hate it however. There's nothing offensive about it. 2. I doesn't seem distinct - merely a written collection of words - at least Londons logo had a distinct shape which stood on it's own. --------------------------------------------- I suspect this might be the winter games version of the London logo. lol. Citizen-Seth
I'm going to hold off judgement until I see it in contect with the branding on the website. Maybe it will look better then...right now I'm just feeling apathetic about it.

stir.ts
IMO the Russians are doing an awesome job. Everything is super clean and professional. The new logo is 100% back to the future of good design. Hi Russia!

barrack
i think if you deconstruct it to just the hi and the 14, it looks really neat. just that part. the rest i can do without. maybe they can highlight the hi/14 somehow and make the rest of the letters a different shade or color. Exactly, the Hi-14 is a great abbreviation of the logo and games with an unlimited branding opportunity of it's own. This is an awesome logo. Ikarus360
Ok, now for the pics that are popping up, its obvious that this logo is not joke and is probably the true one. Well, i have to say i find it interesting, it has even more meaning than London 2012, and the ''Hi'' 14 and .ru thingies are not that bad, it can work very easily with any brand they pick up. Like someone stated here, it has a great potential, but on its own, it just plain sucks ಠ_ಠ Apparently, they have decided to do the same brand experiment London 2012 is doing now. Will it work? Much people hated London 2012 logo for not representing anything british. Altough to be honest, i'm kinda tired that every logo for the winter games have to be a Snowflake or something too winter cliche (the leaf ring one was better, but it looks more like a summer games one). Anyway, probably they'll show us more details of the brand tomorrow on the website and we'll start to like it more or hate it. I suggest we give it a chance...after all, nothing will be worst than London 2012 logo.
Ikarus360
Another Livejournal entry of the Sochi 2014 logo, with some new pics of the unveiling http://drugoi.livejournal.com/3105786.html and also http://www.politonline.ru/alternate/1774.html with some comments in russian about the new logo. You can guess most of the people were surprised by this move.

Kenadian
I knew someone was going to say that. But my comment said graphic design, not graphic art. There's a difference. This emblem has no unique design to it. Just the layout of letters. It seems to lack something. It is like the Paris 2008 bid logo or the Deloitte logo or the faceless wordmark logos of 1000 different companies you'd find anywhere. The most corporate looking of all the Olympic logos I've ever seen.

It's going to be awesome, it's already unforgettable (particularly to some) which is highly desirable and intentional.
NY20??
It fails. For one part, it doesn’t say anything besides what it literally says. The Coca-Cola logo may be just words and letters as well, but you can read "classic good times with a great, refreshing soft drink" into it. What the hell do some pudgy retro-throwback words say about Sochi 2014?

Olympian2004
Well, after quite a good impression after that fuzzy first picture, I'm very underwhelmed now. This logo will be memorable only for that "HI-14" effect and because it's so different from all the previous logos (even London's). I'm not angry like after London's logo presentation but simply disappointed. After all, the bid logo looked better and more artful -- although it displayed "yet another snow crystal". But at least it had a stronger Russian feel about it. The new logo only looks Russian (leaving the .ru aside) when they insert the colours of the Russian flag -- how boring and obvious. OK, this would also have been the case if they had used exactly the same logo as in the fuzzy picture. But at least it would have had a neater mirroring effect then, making it look a little bit more artful. The positive side: The logo doesn't hurt the eyes. The negative side: It doesn't hurt the eyes because it's bland. On a side note: Why do they announce that, in respect for the train victims, they cancel the celebrations on Red Square and then celebrate nevertheless? Was that just a manoevre to deflect as many observers as possible, because the organising committee knew that the logo had already been leaked (well, sort of) and they just wanted to take a little bit of revenge? IceNarcissus
wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooow. They are really going to have to jazz up their complement design schematics. London is doing a good job so far in respect to that, but I dunno if this can be saved! If it's presented with a lot of traditional southwestern Russian patterns, like the national team uniforms of nearly every sport, it might work as an immediate contrast, i.e. the surroundings provide the visual aspects. But, as it stands on its own, it's a big F from me. However, I think Sochi deserves respect in one very important area that the past few logos since Athens have only done about 75% quality on: This will be the most easily-read logo, hands down. Tiny version of Beijing, Vancouver, and London are highly illegible to the unfamiliar, Sochi will pop even as a standard link button. Unfortunately, this redeeming quality comes at the expense of everything else! To add to the typography vs. graphic design discussion, this is 100% typography. Why? Because it is a simple font manipulated with simple colours. Authentic word-based graphic designs are one-of-a-kind compositions, i.e. not easily reproduced without tracing or freehand work, and they in fact are what inspires new fonts to be made.
