My opinion. Next Brazilian Olympic Games (after 2120) will be in Rio de Janeiro again. If not Rio, Brasilia or Curitiba are the best "second-choices" for this. Of course based on today data. But who

I've been to Montevideo last december and got good time there. But the city has nothing fantastic, the Centenario stadium seems to be never refurbished and it was like make a time travel to past... Mo

Well, didn't Santiago, Chile, get the chance to host a Pan American Games before, but declined to do so?

They declined two times. The first time was because Pinochet was busy taking over the country and murdering his own people. Second time was because of an earthquake, i think.

I think is time for South America to host the games. But i'm afraid what will become of Peru in the future, specially with Humala, being friend of the clown we sadly have as president >_> , although maybe everything would go fine. Santiago should try getting them as well, as they could finally host the games after two lost chances.

...My country could try it, since we had a big sucess hosting the Copa America in 2007, but it should be anywhere but Caracas (it hosted the 1983 games but due to the huge crime rate is a big risk to make them there). Maracaibo would be perfect, however, since the city is being ruled by a mayor from the opossition party, I see it kinda impossible.

La Plata wants the Pan American Games 2019

Scioli, governor of Buenos Aires, proposed to the IOC's bid city for a touchdown. Other Argentine cities are also interested.

The Buenos Aires Governor Daniel Scioli, today announced that he proposed to the Argentine Olympic Committee that La Plata is postulated to host the 2019 Pan American Games.

"From the renewed infrastructure and conditioning that we are giving to La Plata, from the point of view to host major sporting events, social and cultural rights, we will propose to host the 2019 Pan American Games, which although are in eight years, and we plan requires certain things, "the governor announced today.

Scioli said that yesterday was "met with the Argentine Olympic Committee president, Gerardo Werthein, and how they are working on the application of any of the cities in Argentina for the Pan American Games," he proposed "that La Plata is considered as a venue."

"Hosting the Pan American Games have for a city, great benefits from every point of view," said the president in dialogue with the press after touring the Passage Dardo Rocha de La Plata.

"While other cities are going to be nominated, we as a province of Buenos Aires, we are proposing to be elected the city of La Plata, from what we have produced: the most modern stadium in Latin America and what are the other sports fields, you can readjust to the different disciplines, "he concluded.

Wasn't 1995 a disaster? Why would they go back?

They had a lot of organization problems with the broadcasting of the games, as just one channel in Argentina got the rights to transmit the games (and they did a bad job for what i've heard, with lots of corruption scandals). Menem and his goverment was much to blame. However, compared to Santo Domingo, it wasn't so much of a disaster. Just a games that went withouth glory or shame.

I think the current goverment of Cristina Kirchner is more competent (or so it seems to be the case) and the Copa America 2011, although not perfect, was not bad. And La Plata seems more capable of hosting a competition than Mar del Plata at the moment (Mar del Plata was excluded from the Copa America)

Three times in fact.

1975 was cancelled after the coup d'etat of 1973. As Ikarus said, the government was more worried about killing people. And I don't think they were able to paint in a few months all the National Stadium and clean all the blood on the walls.

1987 was cancelled after the March 1985 earthquake that destroyed a lot of places in and around Santiago.

And the Second PanAm Winter Games were scheduled for 1995 in Santiago, but cancelled after Las Leñas 1991 was a big failure.

About La Plata... Current government is much more capable of hosting the Games now than in the Menem era. And the help of the government saved last Copa América from a huge disaster. But... it won't have a good organization anyway. Not that bad... but not that good. And besides, La Plata could be one of the most boring cities around. Yes, the new Estadio Único looks awesome but I'm not sure they have all the facilities. And with a true cosmpolitan city like Buenos Aires so close, it seems a joke. It's like giving the Olympics to Newark.

It's time for Chile, despite the fact KRATK have been a little bit Argentine lately... tongue.gif

Argentina can't host PanAms now. First they need to solve some problems... Then they can think about even the Olympic Games.

In a normal situation, Buenos Aires is always a great contender.

Exactly, Argentina should focus on the Youth Olympics. After two straight games in host countries that have hosted twice each its time for a new country to host. Peru/Chile/Uruguay

Argentina should focus in their problems, like fix airport radars, rampant inflation, agrobusiness fights, trade barriers... Then, they can think about host major international events.

The problems they have to fix before bidding for a games aren't that different to the ones we'll have to fix after we finish hosting the WC and the Olympics. Argentina's HDI is 0,797 while ours is 0,718. And these are 2011 numbers.

We're not even in the top 10 in the Americas. It's not just about economy. Brazil hadn't to fix any of its problems to win 2014 and 2016 and this big talk that the economic boom only will clean the house is propaganda for the children.

The HDI of China makes the Brazilian one looks nice, the same for income per capita... Besides that, China made incredible games... Olympic Games bid races have more to do with economics than UN indexes on quality of life... Was Moscow in 1980 an example of quality of life?

Back to our hermanos:

The problem of Argentina is P-O-L-I-T-I-C-A-L. How many time I need to repeat it?

Argentina is mess politically and this is enough to make the country an island in the global scenario.

They need to fix many things, even their infra-structure (and even with all thousand of problems Brazil have, we are ways ahead of them).

Am I crazy or did Copa America they hosted in 2011 left a good impression on how Argentina is a nice place to host events now-a-days? wink.gif

Typing from Avda. Cordoba in Buenos Aires at this very moment, I can say with all letters. This city CAN host any mutisports events sometime soon, but Buenos Aires is really needing real maintenance from buses and subways to sidewalks and cleaning the gardens. Also needs to put more modern illumination (Even Sao Paulo!!! looks more bright than Bs As downtown), fix signage and remove some beggars from touristic areas.

The city looks very very old and not-well conserved, specially in Downtown area...

It's pretty amazing how the things are broken around (Note: I'm a Brazilian saying this, which means, this is really serious).

I'm here with wife and my grandmother (it's her 5th time in Buenos Aires, first after 20 years) and she is amazed how the city went down and lost the "European feeling", unless for the Puerto Madero area, really amazing place and some northbound areas, where we see a decadent but rich neighbourhood.

Not to mention the French and Spanish archtecture really nice, but with lots of graphitti, unfortunatelly. sad.gif

Also, I witnessed some chaos in the Ezeiza Airport when I arrived (indeed, the Airport got closed 4 hours delaying my flight and when we arrived, some strikers were still there) and a huge strike in Avda. Corrientes near El Obelisco. Since it was looking to start a mess, we grabbed the first taxi and leaved the area.

We also planned to go to Delta del Tigre (a river delta in the north of Buenos Aires) but the TAM Viagens representant here in Buenos Aires said to us to no go, because of strikes of train workers... Also, we are scheduled to go to Airport 6 hours before the flight, because of strikers in the highway to Airport, also because Brazilians spend some considerable in the duty free shop area... rolleyes.gif

Somehow, Iiked more Montevideo than Buenos Aires. Despite the fact Montevideo looks even older, the Uruguayan capital is cleaner and ways better conserved than Buenos Aires.

Still, worths a visit to those who wants to feel a Latin American capital... If you want to see something European, go to Europe. wink.gif

To me, it is a wide open field. I wouldn't be surprised, if there are going to be more applicant cities for these Games. Preferably, I would love to have them in a country which has not hosted one yet, but one can only wish that for now.
