Interesting a stadium is being expanded to 50,000 for athletics, which I think it slightly excessive.

Makes no sense. Peru's National Stadium just underwent a massive renovation. I don't see why they don't use it for the athletics events and move football to Estadio Monumental U.

Hi everyone! First, I have to say that as an Olympic Fan, the Santiago failure is, probably, the hardest failure I ever felt. Having obtained just 9 votos (really 8, Chile voted for himself, of course) is a total shame.

But analyzing, may be those the main reason for this epic fail:

- PERU EXPERIENCE IN BIDDING

Santiago was the first time that bidded for the games. Even the first time that bidded some some international event. For years and years seport in Chile has been totally forgotten by politiicians and that's why Chilean sport does not qualify in any competition worlwride. Peru bid was the second in a row, after lossing to Toronto for 2015 Games. Peru learnt the issue, previous lobby was used. Some important aspect that Peru had hosted other International event. Nevertheless, their capacity for good organization on them is still under judgment.

- CHILEAN HISTORY IN INERNATIONAL EVENTS

May National Olympic Committees took in serious consideration the true bad history in Chile with International events. NOCs leaders are rhe same since many years and they have whitnessed how Chile resigned two previous Pan Am organizations (for 1975 and 1987), one Pacific Games for 1999 and one South Amerian Games for 2002. Despite the bid assured totally the oposite this time, the credibility in Chile is totally lost. It's one of the point that we have to work hardly for next bidding process of anything. Besides former Chilean Sports leaders had a black history in human relations with our neighbors. On the readio I jus listened that when Chile asked for a edition for South American games, Argentine leaders just said "while those persons are on the headm we will never negociate wirh Chile"...

Chile is totally alone in this race and probably we never realized before.

- CHILEAN POLITIC RELATIONS IN AMERICA

When we look the politic map, we see that most of America's goverments are left winged. Chile is one f the few countries that currently is right winged. With a right goverment with a extremely low population backing (it never reaches 40% of population backing) credibility, again, go into a play.

- COMPACT PLAN IN LIMA

Lima Master Plan was too compact, with all venues in a 7 km area. Santiago conyemplated two extra host cities: Valparaiso and Viña del Mar.

- PERU CULTURE AND SOCIAL ISSUES

Peru culture carries with a millenial history. Too atractive for visitors. Peruvian Gastronomy is one of the best in the world.

Chile, instead, carries a extremely bad reputation in Latin America: arrogants, xenophobics (specially with eruvians), cunning and no friendly. This is, probably, one of the most strong aspect that relations with other countries are going into a deep crissis. This one of the aspects that we, as Chileans, need tochange, but noobe is concerned about it and none tells us what is our real image in front of foreign eyes.

- RIDICULOUS FINAL PRESENTATION.

One of the aspect that NOCs took advantage was the final presentation of the bidding cities. While Lima made a moving Olympic style final presentation. Chile turned to the minners history again. This is probably desicition of the goverment head, that is still celebrating what they consider as herioc and epic great deed. But the reality is everybody is fed up of such history, sepcially in Chile when we have seen how they have took horrible advantage of this dramatic history. Miners don't have any relation with an Olympic or Pan American plan, so everybody asked "What is the link, then?" Probably for most of the foregign eyes, the boring, no energetic and extremely self confident final presentation was the turning point for a descition that, was supossed to be tight.

Goverment leaders obssesed with a topic that happened 3 years ago, the absence of the Santiago mayor, were political mistakes hard to explain, but easy to understand why their population baking never reaches 40%.

Santiago 2019 was a dream that for moments, we thought we had in our hands. And we will never forget how it slid away so stupidly.

Venezuela is now complaining about vote purchase and hoe the money factor was the main isuue to win. But Pan Am Games are growing in complexity and money issue probabl is going to be a dramatic factor for next biddig process.

Chile has many to learn, probably much more than we thought. And being realistic, the next chances for hile to become the hostu city is for 2027. In 2023 North America is showing their interest. We lost a complete generation, just for our past sins and our weak human relation with our neighbors.

CONGRATULATIONS LIMA, AND THANKS TO ALL OF YOU THAT SERIOUS TRUSTED IN SANTIAGO PROJECT.

MAY BE NEXT TIME!

Excellent recap. Honest and humble. There's still work to do, but with lessons learned and better bid I'm sure Santiago -A great and wonderful city- will get an event of that.

I think 2023 will depends a lot of the contenders, but with USA with clear view by the SOG and Puerto Rico being the only viable contender of Central America and Caribbe nowadays, maybe PASO will make a pass and choose Chile. Also, with the potential return of Bachelet -With all the international prestige and reputation- and the events like Copa America 2015, can make a great counter part of this campaing. Good luck Santiago.

That stadium has a 6 lane track now that's why.

Chile’s efforts to impress judges by drawing on tales of famous mining rescue failed at PASO General Assembly as Lima won 2019 Pan Am Games bid by landslide margin.

Not even the surprise introduction of Luis Urzúa —the shift commander at the time of the 2010 Chilean mining disaster – could persuade the panel of delegates from the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) General Assembly to award Santiago the 2019 Pan Am Games. His tales of triumph in the face of adversity, and claim that Chile would run the Games with the same determination the country illustrated in rescuing all 33 miners, fell upon deaf ears last Friday in Toronto. Instead, the judges chose Lima, whose polished final presentation was spearheaded by 14-year-old taekwondo champion, Renza Cárdenas.

On paper the odds appeared to tilt in Urzúa’s favour — a thickset, burly miner made famous for successfully taking control in the most traumatic of circumstances after the collapse of the San José copper mine trapped himself and his men almost 2,200 feet below ground. But it was Cárdenas who stole the show in what was his second shot at the bidding process, his first coming four years earlier when Lima narrowly lost out to Canada in the race to host next year’s Pan Am Games.

Dressed in the Peruvian national tracksuit and with the gold medal he had won two weeks earlier at the Pan American taekwondo championships draped around his neck, he addressed the crowd.

“Today I’m 14, in 2019, I’ll be 20. At that time, I will be a Pan American champion. I firmly believe in my dream. So today, millions of young Peruvians share the same dream and we want your support. Believe in us, we won’t let you down,” he said, tugging on the heartstrings of the estimated 350 representatives from 41 countries in attendance.

Cárdenas’ plea helped Lima win 31 of the possible 57 votes on the first ballot — an unexpected landslide victory. Santiago and the Argentine city La Punta managed just nine votes each while Ciudad Bolívar in Venezuela drew only eight. A two-horse race had been predicted between Santiago and Lima in the build up to the announcement but the manner in which Peru dominated proceedings took many by surprise, not least Chilean government spokeswoman and member of Santiago’s delegation Cecilia Pérez.

“Many countries pledged and failed,” she said to delegates after the ceremony. “We will rise from here and move forward. We did not expect this decision.”

Sports undersecretary Gabriel Ruiz-Tagle, former tennis player and three-time Olympic medallist Fernando González and singer and music producer Neven Ilic made up the remainder of Chile’s team, who will no doubt be asking themselves what happened after appearing so confident prior to the vote.

“We made our best efforts, but failed. It is a pity but it was out of our hands. We hope Peru organize the Games as they have promised,” González said during an interview with Radio Cooperativa.

Santiago’s final presentation was moving, if not a little eccentric, but it lagged behind Lima in cogency and passion. José Quiñones, president of the Peruvian National Olympic Committee, struggled to hold back tears after earning a standing ovation when his speech ended. In comparison, the drafting in of Urzúa, who was revealed from behind the stage, might have appeared too rash a move by Chile, even desperate.

The presence of Peru’s Prime Minister Juan Jiménez, Lima Mayor Susana Villaran and other leading Peruvian officials emphasized just how seriously the nation was taking their respective bid.

“When I took office in 2012, I knew that the Pan American Games in Peru would be a priority for our government,” Jiménez told the delegates.

Former Olympic medallist and president of the Peruvian Sport Institute (IPD), Francisco Boza, also confidently put forth the advantages of choosing Lima as host city for the 2019 Games.

These included the 13 million people the capital’s airport receives annually, the 60 degrees fahrenheit average that Lima enjoys between the months of July and August when the Games will be held — the perfect temperature for performing athletes — and the 33 international events organised by Peru in the last 10 years, including this year’s South American Youth Games. Boza also touched upon the 65,000 restaurants Lima boasts, including an average of 30 new eateries that open each month. The city is expected to be home to 12 million people by 2019 and has never hosted the Games before.

Meanwhile Pérez outlined “investment in sports infrastructure and Chile’s political stability” as factors benefitting Chile’s bid.

The experience of losing the race to host the 2015 Pan Am Games, which were awarded to Toronto, looks to have spurred on Lima’s delegation. In that year, Lima polled only 11 votes, whereas Toronto won with 33. Bogotá managed just seven.

“Four years ago, we made a promise to ourselves to build a strong new platform for sport in the Americas,” Quiñones said after winning the vote. “And we have delivered. We want to thank the PASO family and our fellow member federations for acknowledging our efforts and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts.”

PASO President Mario Vázquez Raña told the audience in Toronto he was glad to see the improvement Lima had made in the four years between bid presentations.

“Four years ago, we saw when they cried after they lost,” he said. “That stays in the feelings of the people a little bit. Today they laughed and smiled.”

An evaluation commission member, who spoke to sports website Around the Rings, said the most impressive of the four cities won, but Lima still has work to do in constructing a metro line capable of dealing with the influx of spectators the 2019 games will bring. The capital city must also have strong traffic control in place if the Games are to run smoothly.

I personally think the National Stadium Lima needs another Upgrade?

There are two many problems for make another upgrade (or an important one):

1. It's too near from two main avenues.

2. The house which are in the same area that the stadium.
