Felipe Menegaz Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 2019 PAN AMERICAN GAMES What city will be the next host of the Pan American Games?
Felipe Menegaz Posted November 7, 2009 Author Report Posted November 7, 2009 SANTIAGO 2019 The Games return to South America, for the first time in Chile.
KRATK Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 I guess Lima will bid again, and Mar del Plata has announced their intention to bid also. I don't know if Santiago will bid, but certainly it could be a really good option and probably a front-runner after all the changes for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2008 (the new Bicentennial Stadium), the almost-certain Copa América 2015 (the total renovation of the National Stadium) and the 2014 South American Games.
Tatsh Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Mar del Plata Santiago Caracas Bogota or another colombian city. and Lima.
Victor Mata Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 SANTIAGO 2019The Games return to South America, for the first time in Chile. Santiago will be good but let's first wait and see if they'll actually stage a multisports event (2014 South American Games). I believe their withdrawals after being awarded the 1975 and 1987 PanAms and the recent 2006 South American Games will make some people hesitate on electing the chilean capital.
Sir Rols Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 I sure hope Santiago bids - it seems like Chile has been long shy of bidding for anything.

I think Chile is the second most prosperous economy in South America (after Brazil) in this decade. Chile is stable and it is developing fast. I am sure that they are capable to host the Pan Ams.

And bidding is not only about economy or stability or charming cities as we all know. Chile can show itself a little more in the sports scene hosting summer and winter sports championships and become a hot spot of the American South Pacific.
KRATK Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 Chile gave up the 2006 S.A. Games as a "gesture" to Bolivia, after ODESUR said La Paz couldn't host the Games. As you may know, one of the reasons after the troubles in Bolivia between 2002 and 2006 was the relations with Chile, so the government decided to not bid for the 2006 Games so the Bolivians wouldn't feel more betreyed by Chile. And... well.. 1975 and 1987 were two different situations after the coup in 1973 and the earthquake in 1985. Now is really different

The 2006 South American Games were originally awarded to La Paz, Bolivia, but this decision was retracted following domestic instability in Bolivia during 2005. After that, ODESUR awarded the games to Argentina.

Raphael Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 I really would appreciate Santiago as hosting City of a Pan AM Games editio. And it is more likely after a NA edition in Toronto. A kind of rotation has been informally stablished. Thenthat will be SA time again, since Mexico is culturally a Central America country, IMO. 2003 - Santo Domingo 2007 - Rio de Janeiro 2011 - Guadalajara 2015 - Toronto 2019 - Santiago
dave199 Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 Will the USA put forth a bid after the Toronto win? Are they even interested in the Pan Ams?
Faster Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 The rotation is North, Central, South Since 1975 1975 - Mexico (N) 1979 - Puerto Rica © 1983 - Venezuela (S) 1987 - United States (N) 1991 - Cuba © 1995 - Argentina (S) 1999 - Canada (N) 2003 - Dominican Republic © 2007 - Brazil (S) 2011 - Mexico (N) 2015 - Canada (N) This is the first time since 1955-1959 that the same region has hosted the games consecutively. The Caribbean and Central America have bequeathed their 2015 to Canada. I am surprised Jamaica is not interested. Jamaica and Chile seem to be the two glaring misses, and maybe now that Guetemala and Costa Rica have been stable for awhile (or Panama) they would and should be considered so that Central American hosts and not just the Caribbean as their representing their region.
KRATK Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 A little more happened in between. Check it here and here As I said, the resign of Chile was about diplomacy. You can read it here (in Spanish) "The Chilean government, sadly, can't accept the proposal of ODESUR about organizing the 2006 Games in Santiago, as long as Bolivia doesn't decline expressly and publicly their willingness to host them." (...) "For Chile and the Chilean people, their first priority is the spirit of good neighborhood and brotherhood, where the sports plays an essential role, and considering that after the highest diplomatic negotiations, the Bolivian people believe that they have the greatest right to be the host country of this important event".
lucas_leobas Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 wow, I didn't know Santiago had given up the organization of pretty much ALL multi-sports events they were awarded.
KRATK Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 we haven't been lucky there's also the 1993 Winter Pan Am, cancelled after the US announced they won't take part and the rest of the delegations said pretty much the same. the only multi-sport games that I remember are the 1986 South American Games
FYI Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 Will the USA put forth a bid after the Toronto win? Are they even interested in the Pan Ams? Minneapolis should bid for this, something that is within their reach, instead of dreaming about something that is beyond their realm of possibility. But I don't think that the USA is interested at this time in the Pan Ams.
Faster Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 3 North American Pan American Games in a row is not going to happen. The next possibility for the USA would be 2027 after Central and South America can host again.
Felipe Menegaz Posted November 9, 2009 Author Report Posted November 9, 2009 3 North American Pan American Games in a row is not going to happen. The next possibility for the USA would be 2027 after Central and South America can host again. Agreed. But I am concerned about Central America. PASO needs to avoid another Santo Domingo fiasco. What Central American city is capable to host Olympic-level Games like Rio de Janeiro and Toronto? I don't know... Maybe Panama City...
aluz Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 I think the main question is what PASO wants to do with the PanAm Games. They can accept Olympic standard PanAms to be a rare thing and continue with the level seen in Mar del Plata and Santo Domingo or they can try to raise the bar and have more Torontos and Rios. In the latter case, Central America will have a hard time hosting it. By the way, I don't know how Panama is doing right now. After all, its growth seemed to be fed by the financial and real state bubbles in the American economy. If they are still doing fine, they would be a good option in Central America, maybe with a second choice in San Jose in Costa Rica.
DannyelBrazil Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 There are some bizar movements here in Santos (Brazil) to bring the 2019 PanAms to the city... Don't worry, people are crazy here...
Feheva Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 ...maybe with a second choice in San Jose in Costa Rica. Or maybe a joint bid of Guatemala city and San Salvador (El Salvador). They are more or less 200km apart... Too dreamy?
