The 2005 Pacific Curling Championships (the Worlds qualifier for Asia and Oceania) held this year in Taipei have concluded. At stake were two top spots to qualify for the 2006 Women's World Curling Championships to be held in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada as well as the top two men's spots to qualify for the 2006 Men's World Curling Championships to be held in Lowell, Massachusetts, USA. Chinese Taipei seemed to have outsourced the training of their teams, with the men at the Richmond, BC, Canada club and the women at the Madison, Wisconsin, USA club. Men's Round Robin Results: 1. Team Sean Becker - New Zealand (4 - 1) 2. Team Xiao Ming Xu - China (4 - 1, loss to New Zealand) 3. Team Hugh Millikin - Australia (3 - 2) 4. Team Yoshiyuki Ohmiya - Japan (2 - 3) 5. Team Jong Chul Baek - Korea (1 - 4) 6. Australia The next, and last, qualifier is the European Championships that will be held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Germany starting on Friday the 9th. The top 7 of the 10 teams competing in the A Tournameant will qualify for worlds as well as the the winner of the match between the 8th place finishing A Tournament team and the 1st place finishing B Tournament team. A side note, 9th and 10th in the A Tournament are relegated to the B Tournament the following year, with 1st and 2nd in the B advancing to A. The final and bronze final for both men and women will be held tomorrow/Saturday: MEN: Final: Norway vs. Sweden Bronze Final: Scotland vs. Switzerland Round Robin Final Standings: 1. Scotland 8-1 2. Sweden 8-1 3. Switzerland 6-3 4. Norway 5-4 5. Germany 5-4 6. Denmark 4-5 7. Ireland 4-5 8. Finland 3-6 9. Italy 1-8 10. Russia 1-8 The top 7 automatically qualify for the WCC plus Finland, who beat the B Tournament winner, France, in the WCC challenge match. Italy and Russia are relegated to the B Tournament in next year's European Championships, while France and the 2nd place finisher of the B Tournament, Wales, advance to the A Tournament next year. France and Wales beat England and the Czech Republic in the B semifinals respectively. IceNarcissus Posted December 22, 2005 Author Report Share Posted December 22, 2005 Another curling note, the annual World Freytag Award given out by the World Curling Federation to a person, whether athlete, coach, or icebuilder, who has made advancements to the sport of curling will be Kunio Nando of Japan. After the award's beginning in 1978, the award has only been won by North Americans and Europeans, and Nando will be the first Asian to win the award. Nando was president of the Japanese Curling Association for most of the 90's until 2000 and was instrumental in adding curling as a discipline to the Nagano games as it was originally planned to be added/re-added at the Salt Lake games and Nagano nor any other of the bidding cities for the 1998 WOG were required to include it in their bid. Some say re-added because curling was once a medalling discipline at the first WOG in Chamonix 1924, but some say it was new in 1998 because in Chamonix standard team sizes were much larger.
