Rei
Waiting for Austria-Switzerland2008 a whole 9 countries is running for 2012 edition actually: Azerbaigian, Greece, Italy, Romania, Turkey, Russia and binational partnership Croatia-Hungary and Polland-Ukraina. In November 2005 UEFA will decide the short list of 3 final countries which are going to compete till December 2006 date of host country announce.. what is your ideal bid and why? Do you think next Eurocup bids will influence the olympic candidatures?

Mick The Mick
Until recent events at the San Siro, I thought that the Euro 2012 was almost certainly going to Italy - they have the stadiums, the experience, they haven't hosted it in a while and none of the other big footballing countries want to bid so they can easily get Italy out of the race for future competitions - and therefore it would not have any impact on the destination of the 2012 olympic games. I still reckon that that is the case, but maybe Italian football's internal problems will make UEFA look at other bids more thoroughly. And that might just (at a stretch) put the Russian bid into the running for the Euro championships, so now ... who knows?
arwebb
I agree. I thought Italy looked a certainty, but after last week I'm not so sure.
Rei
I wouldn't take It for granted that Italy will be the favourite.. Apart Milan trouble many italians stadium are not still adapted to UEFA security and capacity standard.. I think only S.Siro.. otherwise Eurocup could return to a big european nation after binational and small national bids as Nederland-Belgium, Portugal and Austria-Sw.. I think UEFA is going to decide in this direction.. so the 3 finalist should be Italy, Russia and Turkey
Robert Henson
I've heard that EUFA are looking for countries that would never be chosen to host a world cup but could prove themselves on the European stage. So maybe in the future football powerhouses such as England, Italy, Spain and Germany are out of the question as are countries with lots of nice stadiums like France. Rei
If UEfa continues to looking for no football-powerhouses in next Cups the tourney will lose part of its iportance and audience.. they shouldn't make comparisons or being influenced by other international games as Worldcup or OG.. in this case Euro bid is going to become especially a consolation prize for lostcountries. It's time for a bignation bid..
Robert Henson
You may be right Rei. But, in a way it is already a consolation prize. If a big nation thinks they've got a good stab at getting a world cup then they won't bother bidding for the Euros. I don't think having smaller countires hosting will necessarily diminish the competition in any way though. Portugal, a relatively small nation didn't do the competition any harm IMHO. Hell, if Athens managed to pull off the Olympics then anything is possible! And, for countries like Poland, Romania and Crotia the Euros are just as big an opportunity to put their nation on the map and they will be treated as though they're the Olympics or the World Cup. In fact, the more I think about it, the better the idea becomes. Italy 1990, France 1998, Germany 2006, England 2018 (a distinct posssibilty) and that only leaves the Spanish to host the World Cup. Then we have the big nations holding the most prestigious tournament and the small nations treating their oppurtunity to host the Euros as if it were a World Cup. I still remember that they were beaten 1-0 in Valencia by Northern Ireland!!! Spain also bid for the 2004 Euro championships but somewhat surprisingly lost out to Portugal. They weren't going to bid again for 2012, since madrid is already bidding for the olympics and UEFA won't want to put the tournament in neighbouring countries back to back. I suspect you'll see a Spanish bid for 2016 - they already have the stadia (4 5 star stadia plus the Bernabeu, which will be 5 star when completed), the infrastructure and the experience. It comes down to whether UEFA really want to promote the smaller countries or not, in which case another Irish-Scottish bid, a Scandinavian bid , more Eastern European bids???? Rei
UEFA's directions seems like that.. but it's only our general impression due to the success of small national bids of last 10 years.. I think past an future small national bids are possible in well organized country (Benelux, Aus-Sw) or in a high-incrasing development country as Portugal.. Instead easter euro countries should waiting for a long time(from 2016 later) before consider themself capable to host this tournment even if they're going to made joint bids from each other.. Faster
i would hope that Croatia-Hungary win the 2012 Euro, Croatia has a good football history and it would be nice to see an eastern european nation win over Turkey and Italy

Golan Trevize
Smaller countries should continue to have the oportunity to host the championship, in my opinion Euro 2004 was the best euro champ ever, the atmosphere here was great, there was a sense of a great party in the all country, but being portuguese my opinion is biased. Rei
may be you're biased.. but certainly Portugal hosted a great Eurocup.. by all points of view! I wonder if it could host a world competition like WC or OG good luck
Golan Trevize
I think Portugal could co-host a great world cup with spain, 16 teams in each country, it could function as an only country.

Mick The Mick
Either the Azeris are incredible optimists or they think that vast amounts of petro-dollars are about to be spent on a major upgrade of facilities ... or more likely, UEFA won't let them past the cut off list. I suspect this race will come down to Italy, the clear favourites, versus a very strong Russian bid (if they go ahead) plus a decent effort from Turkey, although with so much concentrated in Istanbul, they could not start as favourites. The Croat-Hungarian bid looks too much like a marriage of convenience - after the Austrians dumped their eastern neighbours after one set-back. But if Italy are the favourites, what impact could that have on their choice for the 2012 olympics? A number of the Italian IOC members have close links to football - and since they don't belong to either the British Commonwealth or to the francophone bloc, they may be considered as floating voters. Will they want their party to be overshadowed by another major event in Europe that summer? A vote for New York, perhaps. Or if it has to be in Europe, would they want it next door (ie in France) or just along the Mediterranean (ie Italy). A vote for London, perhaps. Robert Henson
Italy need to sort out their stadium security before they are given a major footballing event. I don't know when UEFA pick the winner, but, given the events in Milan and Turin and many other cities this season, their position as strong facoutires must be under threat. I don't know what the situation is like in Turkey, but their reputation certainly isn't one to be envied (as I've said I don't know the true situation, so please no flame war on this one) I'd personally like Russia to win the 2012 Euros. A Russian Euros followed by a London Olympics. Sounds good to me!
