thatsnotmypuppy Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Alrighty – by popular demand (thanks Cube!) I am happy to kick off the first ever Games Bids Olympic Look competition! This is how we will do it – you have to design a new logo for either the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games OR the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Games. What I need you to do is come up with a logo for that city that encompasses the overall feel of the future Games. What local influences can be tied into a visionary design concept? The first step will be to design your logo. It has to be bold, new and indicative of how you want the city to be represented. This logo has to be presented in 7 forms – the full colour logo on a white background, the logo in black and white, the logo as adapted to fit on backgrounds of all the Olympic Ring colours – blue, black, red, yellow and green. It seems like a lot hard work but should be pretty straight forward. I want you to post the first one in here only – the full colour logo on a white background. The others can be sent through to nyc2012@gmail.com I will be asking a few old timers here (Baron, Mo etc) to help judge the logos. We will decide on finalists who will then integrate their logo into an Olympic Look. This stage will involve a booklet to be put together showing your inspirations, and how you would use your logo in venues, on posters, flags, pictograms etc etc. Obviously I realize that not everyone has access to the same level of technology to complete the tasks at hand – so the initial stage will be judged not on execution, but on visual impact. This is a great chance to let your artist side just run wild! Here are my favourite examples of recent years -
Sir Rols Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 A great competition idea. Pity I'm crap at graphics design.
NY20?? Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Would love to try it, it's a wonderful idea, but I'd really be hard pressed to find the time to put anything decent together. But I look forward to seeing what people come up with!
cormiermax Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 I present my proposal for the Sochi 2014 logo The logo represents a palm tree, which are native to the area as well as the Olympic flame. The colours represent the warmth of the area and climate of the mountains.
Citius Altius Fortius Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 ... until when do you have to post the "first entry" logo here?
DannyelBrazil Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 I'm already preparing my logo, later I'll post it here! Great idea!
Rob2012 Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Yep, I'm in. How long have we got before you want the first logo here?
thatsnotmypuppy Posted November 6, 2009 Author Report Posted November 6, 2009 Well - that is up to you guys - couple of weeks? Lets see how things go. The Brazilian people aren't known for sticking to timeframes!!
Scotguy Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Well - that is up to you guys - couple of weeks? Lets see how things go. The Brazilian people aren't known for sticking to timeframes!! Sounds good to me, wednesday would be the first chance i have to start things so that timeline is realistic. Only thing is i would like some more concrete reasurances about the quality thing, as i only have Word, and hence my images would not match those with better graphics software, hence i dont want to do alot of work and spend time for nothing. Other than that i am in
Rob2012 Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Scotguy, I'm using very old versions of decent software. I'd imagine some of the free graphics software you can get now is pretty good though, inkscape and the open office ones look alright at first glance. Here's a list for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vector_graphics_editors And download Gimp for photo editing - I think that's still free.
Scotguy Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Cheers Rob Will give some of them a go
thatsnotmypuppy Posted November 6, 2009 Author Report Posted November 6, 2009 The initial phase is logo only - regardless of how whizz bang it is I just want to see your logo and explanation behind it. We will chose the best and put to the vote. After that we will go forward with an Olympic Look section...
DannyelBrazil Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Well - that is up to you guys - couple of weeks? Lets see how things go. The Brazilian people aren't known for sticking to timeframes!! We really need to read this? Two weeks (which means 17 days for Brazilians according to you) is great.
NY20?? Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 For those without any graphic design software: Pixlr is a good free one, no download of any kind required. Works right on your internet server.
cube Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 it symboliza a footprint in the sand of copacabana and also the legacy the olympics will give to Rio and entire Brazil
thatsnotmypuppy Posted November 7, 2009 Author Report Posted November 7, 2009 You could also say the foot is almost South America shapewise and the toes represent the rings
stir.ts Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 it symboliza a footprint in the sand of copacabana and also the legacy the olympics will give to Rio and entire Brazil Hey that's a nice idea.
Citius Altius Fortius Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Are we allowed to use graphics, images from the internet in this competition?
thatsnotmypuppy Posted November 7, 2009 Author Report Posted November 7, 2009 As long as you can place it in the context of the Games you have chosen and credit it - sure! The best inspiration sometimes comes via plagiarism!
Citius Altius Fortius Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 I wanted to have a logo which symbolise South America - therefore I choose a typical animal, which lives in Brazil resp. in Rio de Janeiro. Therefore I reduced the animal into 5 simple graphic forms, which represent with their colours the five different continents. Here is it:
baron-pierreIV Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 it symboliza a footprint in the sand of copacabana and also the legacy the olympics will give to Rio and entire Brazil Good for the Paralympics as well. No left foot needed. Hey Pup, why not require BOTH Olympic AND Paralympic logos??
cube Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 my final design called "Footprint of Legacy"
cube Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 my final designcalled "Footprint of Legacy" ha ha ha, i wrote 2018 - i´m so stupid - LOL
fatixxx Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 Cube , I like this footprint concept .. well done. I like it and as Baron Pierre said it is also feasible for the IPC's logo for Rio 2016 as well. Herefore I got a little inspiration and put (it is not so very well designed, hope you don't reject the idea) tints of blue and green lines. These symbolise also the greenery of the woods and blue of the water concept at whole the South-American continent. But I don't have the needed painting program herefore. It will give you an idia to put a few impulses for the entire logo and give more a dynamic effect. I uses your logo to describe this .. Thanks for your understanding.
