Perths' Response To The Report

Recommended Posts

First of all we are glad that Perth had been shortlisted together with such remarkable bid from the other cites!

We would like to reply to the two questions concerning Stadium WA and the public transportation link to the airport first.

Stadium WA

The construction of the new Stadium WA in East Perth is guaranteed by the state of Western Australia and by the federal government in Canberra. The stadium will be completed – like it is mentioned in the venue plan – before 2018, since the stadium will be a venue for the FIFA World Cup in Australia in the same year.

The presented graphic might be misleading, but the new Stadium WA will offer enough space for an athletic track, which can be used for international sports events like the Commonwealth Games.

Transperth link to the airport

Due the FIFA World Cup in 2018 it is planned to built a new Transperth link to the Domestic Terminal as well as to the International Terminal. The new line will be partly underground and partly on ground to prevent problems with the residents.

Here is a graphic of the proposed new link.

The other question will be answered as soon as possible - we are checking if some sports can use other venues...

We would like to answer the other questions which were raised in the report - due we want to offer the athlete compact Games we decided to challenge our venue plan and we decided to change some venues:

Badminton - the Arena Collier Park doesn't need to be built, since the Curtin University of Technology has just opened the Curtin Arena (capacity 2,000)

Cycling Track, Cycling BMX, Cycling Mountain Biking - a new Cycling Center for WA with a Velodrome, a BMX facility and Mountain Bike course will be built close to the Western Australia Institute of Sport.

The venues for Squash and Shooting had the largest distance to the other venues therefore we are glad that we found venues, which are much closer:

Squash - the Arena Joondalup is exchanged by the new AK Reserve Indoor Arena (capacity 2,500), which is right next to the Challenge Stadium (Netball) and Challenge Aquatics Center (Aquatics)

Shooting - the shooting range of the Rifle Club will replace the old venue - the Rifle Club is in the suburb of Swanbourne, which is at the coastline and close to the Challenge Stadium resp. Claremont Showground.

With this change of venues we want to give the Commonwealth Games a great legacy for the citizens of Perth and Western Australia - we want to streghtens the sport infrastructure of our city and we want to rebuilt the temporary venues in other Australian cities therewith the citizens of these cities profit from the Commonwealth Games in Perth, too.

Here is the new venue plan with the new Transperthline to the airport - only the venues, which are new in the plan, are named on the map - the others are only shown):
