All the lists had the US in first place as they had a bigger number of medals, even when China had the biggest number of golden ones. Still, the American media returned to the "gold is the most important" table once the US was able to surpass China in the golden medal count. Guardian
Well, that wasn't the case when the US was behind China in gold medals back in the 2004 Olympics. Still, the American media returned to the "gold is the most important" table once the US was able to surpass China in the golden medal count. All in all, that is precisely why the IOC does NOT recognize such statistics. Besides, the USA, for Athens 2004, was the top nation in gold medals won AND the overall medals tally anyway. PYRROS2004
Surprisingly Greece has only won 2 golds, and it's now in 9th position; although it's in 4th position by number of medals (16 in total). Unfortunately, the Games are at the start of the season, so many good athletes didn't go to the Games. On the other hand, the Mediterranean Games are 'loosing' their glory, so the 'stars' don't prefer to compete in them. Another problem is that the Greek federations don't have this year the budget they had the previous years (because of the Olympics), so they had to cut their costs, which means fewer athletes in the Games.
