I agree when he says that Pan American Games are overranked, even now, after the mess that was Santo Domingo/2003, but it's still a huge sports event. Co-Rio is trying to get PanAm's the status it had in the 60's ans 70's. Now, for the cities, you're again right. Rio is widely known, but Sao Paulo, Salvador and Brasilia has got some reputation. Mexico1968 : I think you should read something about Brazil before arguing. Brazil is not the best country in the world, but it's not among the worst, either. It has some capacity and whit the evolution of PAnAm's preparations we can review this capacity more accurately.

Rominger
From Rio 2007 Official Site, the full story, for all those non-Portuguese speakers Less than 1000 days now, people, time to get moving... RIO 2007 PRESENTS PICTOGRAMS 10/18/2004 The official pictograms for the Pan American Games - Rio 2007 were presented to the public on Friday, October 15. These images make up part of the visual identity project for the multi-sports event. The release was part of the event that took place at the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Modern Art to celebrate the 1,000 day mark until the start of the Pan American Games - Rio 2007. The date fell on Saturday, October 16, as the opening ceremony of the event will take place on July 13, 2007. The president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) and the Organizing Committee of Pan American Games Rio 2007 (CO-RIO), Carlos Arthur Nuzman, highlighted the universal language of the pictograms, which visually symbolize the sports that will be disputed. He stated that he was pleased to have the opportunity to present them on the very day of this historical mark. "There is a lot of work to do during these upcoming thousand days, and we are well aware of this," said Nuzman. "But we are also proud of being up-to-date on all of our obligations. Even the President of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) himself, Mario Vázquez Raña, recognized the advanced state of our planning in a meeting that took place at the beginning of this month." In the ceremony that took place on Friday, October 15, the official pictogram poster was also launched to the public, with a limited circulation of 1,000 copies which were distributed those present, including the Minister of Sports, Agnelo Queiroz, the recently elected Vice-Mayor of Rio de Janeiro and State Congressman Otávio Leite, the Municipal Secretary of Sports and Leisure, Ruy Cezar, the Special Secretary for the Pan American Games, Cláudio Versiani, the State Secretary of Sports, Francisco de Carvalho, and the State Subsecretary for the Pan American Games, Bernard Razjman. To create the pictograms that identify the 35 different sports categories of the RIO 2007 program, organizers performed an in-depth study on Olympic Games and previous Pan American Games. "In a way that is unique from past styles, we are trying to work with many different colors to create a feeling of happiness that is typical of sports, the Brazilian, and in particular, of the local Carioca," explained Ney Valle, Creative Director of Dupla Design, which is also responsible for the creation of the RIO 2007 logo. In the elaboration of the pictograms, organizers also worked with Claudia Gamboa and Fabiana Takeda. The research on images for the sports categories was based on videos and photographs. The result are pictograms that express the idea of movement, but without losing the notion of the mosaic, an important visual element that joins the entire set of images. "For the event logo, we designed the outline in the birds' wing to look like the Sugar Loaf in the background. In the pictograms, there is the silhouette of an athlete in the background and the colors form the additional images that identify the sports categories, such as the volleyball net, for example," said Valle. The high point of the party was when authorities and athletes presented the pictograms. Medal winners from Athens 2004 were present among the athletes, including: Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira, who won the gold medal in the Star class, and Flávio Canto, bronze medal winner in the Judo competition. Medal winners from the Paralympic Games were also present, including: Antonio Tenório, who won the gold medal in Judo, and Carla Cardoso, who won the silver medal in Judo. Before the presentation of the pictograms, CO-RIO showed a video about the RIO 2007 organization. The Minister of Sports, Agnelo Queiroz, praised the initiative. "This is an excellent opportunity to give back to the Brazilian society, to the Americas and to all those around the globe who are following this event that will be held in Brazil," said Agnelo. "And we are working to ensure one of the greatest editions of the Pan American Games in history." The Municipal Secretary of Sports and Leisure, Ruy Cezar, recognized the efforts that the City of Rio de Janeiro has made to provide the necessary infrastructure for the Games. "We are not only working to construct sports equipment, we are also developing important projects in other areas, such as those related to transportation and the environment, so that everything goes exactly as planned in 2007," explained Cezar. The State Secretary of Sports, Francisco de Carvalho, reinforced the commitment of the state of Rio de Janeiro to the RIO 2007 Games. "The remodeling of Maracanã Stadium, Maracanãzinho Stadium and the Julio Delamare Aquatic Park will ensure that our equipment meets all PASO and International Olympic Committee requirements," said Carvalho. Carioca
The History and Symbols of Pan American Games The first Pan American Games opened on February 25, 1951, at Buenos Aires. More than 2,500 athletes from 22 countries participated. This lithograph poster was designed by artist Falier Totaro in 1941 for games that would not occur for another 9 years. SYMBOLS OF THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES THE PAN AMERICAN FLAME The Pan American Torch was first lit in 1951 on Mt. Olympus in Greece. A relay of runners carried the torch to Buenos Aires, Argentina, host city of the Ist Pan American Games. A Greek athlete, John Sossidis, carried the torch into the opening ceremonies and lit the urn in the stadium. Starting with the 2nd Pan American Games in 1955 the torch was lit in Mexico City on a hill where the Aztecs burned their ceremonial fires. The torch is then carried by a relay of runners to the site of the games. In 1967, The torch was flown from Mexico City to St. Paul, Minnesota. A relay of "First Nations" Native American runners carried the torch to Winnipeg for the Vth Pan American Games. At the entrance to the stadium, the last Native American torchbearer was stopped and replaced in favor of a white University of Manitoba student-athlete. When the XIIIth Pan American Games were held in Winnipeg, in 1999, the Native American runners were given a formal apology and allowed to bring the torch into the opening ceremonies. The Native Americans were greeted with a tremendous ovation, before passing the torch to the final torchbearers. Since 1991, the torch has been lit at the ancient Aztec temple of Teotihuacan in Mexico City as a reenactment of an ancient Aztec fire ritual. The 1991 torch lighting was the first time this ceremony was performed since the Atzec conquest in the 1500s. The identity of the final torchbearer is usually a closely guarded secret, and is an honor for the athlete or individual chosen. THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES MOTTO The Pan American Games Motto is: America, Espirito, Sport, Fraternite The motto is in the four languages of the Americas (English, Spanish, French, and Portugese) and means "The American Spirit of Friendship Through Sport" The motto was coined by a Mexican, Leoncio Gonzalez Salas. THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGES OF THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES The official languages of PASO are English and Spanish. THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES LOGO Adopted in 1955 after a competition, The Pan American Games Logo was designed by a Mexican, Leoncio Gonzalez Salas, and consists of a torch superimposed on five concentric rings. The color of the rings from the center are: Yellow, Green, White, Red, and Blue. At least one color is found in every flag of the member nations. The center disc around the torch is light blue and bears the motto of the games in a circular pattern. In 1998 the Olympic Rings were added to the torch to symbolize the connection with the Olympic Movement. THE PAN AMERICAN SPORTS ORGANIZATION FLAG (THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES FLAG) The Pan American Sports Organization Flag is a white 1:2 proportioned rectangle with the PASO logo in the center. On either side of the logo are the initials of the Pan American Sports Organization in English and Spanish. The PASO Flag has undergone several alterations since it was first adopted in 1955. The original design included the PASO logo on a white field. This version was used through the 1987 games. Before the 1991 games the name of the organization in Spanish and English was added beneath the logo: Organizacion Deportiva Panamericana - Pan American Sports Organization The current version was adopted before the 1999 games. A large version with the same 1:2 proportions is used as the ceremonial flag of the games. This flag is raised during opening ceremonies and flies until the closing ceremony. The Olympic Flag has also been flown at every Pan American Games since 1951. 1955 - 1987 PASO FLAG 1991 - 1995 PASO FLAG 1999 - Present PASO FLAG THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES ANTHEM There is no official Pan American Games Anthem. Various anthems have been composed over the years, most notably by Carol Forbes for the opening ceremony of the Xth Pan American Games at Indianapolis in 1987, but none have been adopted by PASO as official. The organizing committee decides what music shall accompany the raising of the ceremonial PASO Flag at the opening ceremony. THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES OATH An athlete from the host nation pronounces the Pan American Games Oath during the opening ceremony in the following words: "In the name of all competitors, I promise that we shall take part in these Pan American Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honor of our teams." Then an official from the host nation takes the following oath: "In the name of all the judges and officials, I promise that we shall officiate in these Pan American Games with complete impartiality, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship."
