Rio 2016 Olympics, A Mistake By Ioc?

Recommended Posts

In the sense that every city has its problems which need to be minimised, yes. And in the sense tha no city is risk-free, yes. But I wouldn't go too far down the road with this comparison.

London is, in general, a pretty safe city and certainly compared to Rio. The terrorism risk is always there but it doesn't get into the very fabric of the city or affect the city on a day-to-day basis. Nor does it make certain parts of the city no-go areas for tourists. And those who wreaked havock on London do not rule over segments of the city.

Rio's problems seem to be much more constant and much closer to the surface. Whilst the shells of destroyed buses may look similar, it's a very different problem to the one London (undoubtedly) faces and they require completely different solutions.

I'm not saying London's problems should be trivialised or ignored, but you simply saying "it is like the 7 July 2005 when London win the 2012 Summer Olympics" doesn't really get to the nub of the issue.

I agree that his comparison isn't that good, mainly because drug dealers in Rio only care about profit. they don't even let the criminals that live there to do other "jobs" if its going to affect the drug dealing "business".

So during the games you wont hear a thing because if they do something they'll face extinction and even the most primitive animal knows thats a bad thing

In London's case the more press the terrorists get = more 'success' in their minds. So, by their logic, the Olympics is the perfect opportunity for them.

Thats what makes his comparison bad...

Um.................are you people sick? You do remember that in less than a DAY after Jacque Rogge announced that the games were awarded to London to satge the 2012 Olympics, th ecity was rocked and essentially crippled by horrific terroirst explosions? Rio has not come even close to breaking such a tragic record. Indeed, those terrorsit explosion in LONDON has me on edge. Forget Rio......the real concern is London and I do hope they get things right!

Any city hosting Olympics will be a target for terrorism. This is a fact.

But, cities in USA, Europe are more iconic to terrorists than a city in South America (that don't play a role in wars or other geopolitcal issues)

No, we're not going to "forget Rio" because it has issues as well which we'd like to talk about.

Just because London also has issues (which you happen to deem of greater seriousness), that doesn't mean Rio's issues - which they undoubtedly have - shouldn't be talked about, or that we're "sick" for talking about them.

And we are in the Rio forum, don't foget.

We should not forget Rio problems, since Rio needs to improve many things in security...

But definitvelly it's not a reason to cancel the Olympic Games there...

Only this silly OlympicUSA thinks this way...

We shouldn't forget Rio's security issues. This sort of discussion is fundamental for the resolution of these problems. If people just skipped over them, there would be no end for this unfortunate situation. A healthy and polite discussion of this topic is neccessary for better understanding of this whole thing going on in Rio.

WHAT ABOUT THE LONDON TERRORIST ATTACKS IN 7 JULY 2005?

52 PEOPLE DIED IN THAT OCCASION...

Yeah, those events happened due to Jihadists and their barbaric actions!

Comparing the crime in Rio to London is just silly. For one, Rio had 6000 murders in 2008 whilst London had just over 100. Also, London and the UK is much better equipped to deal with crime/terrorism that Rio/Brazil.

Rio has one of the highest crime rates on earth so therefore it is a huge issue concerning the Olympics considering that recent news reports show how violence has recently erupted in Rio.

We had a discussion four years ago on these very boards about the implications the terrorist attacks would have on London 2012.

This thread, similarly, is about recent events in Rio and the implications they have on Rio 2016.

Do you honestly think the terrorist attacks on London went unmentioned on these boards and we're somehow picking on Rio by talking about what happened last week?

The fact is, there have been recent events in Rio which, like the London terrorist attacks, raise big issues for the organisers, for the host nation's government, and for the nation's security services. And we're talking about these issues now, in the same way we did about London's problems four years ago.

considering that recent news reports show how violence has recently erupted in Rio.

Sorry Oaky, this is just ridiculous to say...

The only different thing that happened is that a bullet reached fuel tank of a helicopter... (That flew 4 kilometers after this until find a place for landing).

Police and drug dealers fighting is not news... And no eruption of crime in Rio... A localized problem in a small favela in North Zone of Rio.

Unfortunatelly this happen sometimes, and will happen again since Police are trying to address this problem.

You guys are still 'debating' this? Geez.

Nothing we say here, Rio this, London that, for thread pages non-end, is going to change the fact that London is hosting 2012, & Rio is hosting 2016. Let's move on already.

PERFECT!

London is much better equipped to to deal with crime /terrorism then Rio/ Brazil ? mighty white of you indeed . How so? Is it the experience of being a Target that had being bombed on several occasions by the IRA that included the Horsemen on the way to Buckingham Palace, The Military Musicians blow up , The London Financial District with the windows blown out in some buildings . A Refinery that the Queen Dedicated then being fire bombed in North Scotland After she left ? The Birmingham Five, The entire tory cabinet coming close to being assassinated at an annual convention in Birghton ? Lord Mountbatten being assassinated on a yacht in the Irish Sea ? THe downtown shopping mall in Manchester bombed much like the oklahoma city bombing.

Boy I guess the UK has the experience between Islamic Extremists and IRA terrorists to say yeah your better equpped LOL.

Rio or any olympic city has to be totally aware of terrorism for the games but the revolving door of groups wanting to strike at one of the world's highest profile financial districts is always a threat . London is certainly that .

It is just common knowledge.

Rio 2016 will be much like the Pan Am Games in Regards to security. you will have 30000 to 40000 federal police and army in the city and crime will take a temporary breather in regards to major crimes. The same will be the case for security in London one would think.

The Threats are different for every city that hosts . No police force or military is any better then the the other in regards to security simply because you can do all manner of things reacting to past history . The next hit to an Olympics will be a lapse that a determined terrorist has discovered and exploited .

Yet another anti British tirade!

You really are a prejudice bigot. You are hijacking a topic to spew venom about Britain which everyone knows you despise due to being a bigot. This topic is about Rio.

Please stick to the topic. Just to remind you, the topic is if it was a mistake to award the games to Rio in relation to it's crime culture. This is a huge topic to discuss and your rants about Britain and your hatred of it have nothing to do with it.

This thread is stupid. IOC will not change its decision because a wave of violence in Rio.

It's not news, it's not the first time.

IOC knew the murder rate of Rio and it's security problems before the decision. If they choose Rio they give Rio a vote of trust for improving this situation for the future...

Things will be not fixed magically in two days.

Useless thread, with useless discussions.
