Lord David
Hiroshima is the symbolism of the IOC's ideal for world peace. Even if it was the Japaneses' fault for their wrong doings in WW2. That should be taken into account. They probably won't win in the first bid, or even the second (unlikely that they'll get another chance, it's win or nothing). baron-pierreIV
Hiroshima is the symbolism of the IOC's ideal for world peace. The Olympics, ancient and modern, pre-date Hiroshima's dubious date with destiny. What is this fascination with B- and lower cities and now equating a minor Japanese city with the "IOC"? Yeah, Hiroshima paid the price for its country's experiment with aggressive militancy...and DON'T FORGET the Japanese Imperial forces did SOME HORRIBLE, UNSPEAKABLE things to people during WW2. Please stop portraying them as victims as history. Also, LD, you don't see an image of Hiroshima shown in Olympic ceremonies. It's still the dove. gotosy
Tokyo 2020 Games bid to become official soon The Tokyo metropolitan government has decided to bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, and an official announcement is likely later this month, according to informed sources. Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara is expected to declare Tokyo's plans while Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, is in Japan in mid-July, the sources said. Tokyo, which unsuccessfully bid for the 2016 Olympics, hosted the Games in 1964. Ishihara expressed his intention to bid again to host the Olympics during a policy speech at a regular session of the metropolitan assembly on June 17, saying it would symbolize restoration from the devastation caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake. However, he refrained from making an official announcement because any bid requires the full support of the Japanese Olympic Committee and other concerned organizations. On June 23, JOC President Tsunekazu Takeda handed Ishihara a written request asking Tokyo to bid for the Olympics. JOC members have visited disaster-hit Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures and asked officials there to support a potential bid. On Tuesday, a research committee of Liberal Democratic Party Diet members seeking to promote Japan as a sports-oriented nation resolved to support the Olympic bid "for the entire nation." The metropolitan government has apparently decided that the conditions are right to bid for the Olympics. Rogge is scheduled to make a speech at a July 15 symposium commemorating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Japan Sports Association and the JOC. Ishihara, who has been invited to a ceremony to be held the following day, likely will make the official announcement after that. The deadline for candidate cities to apply to the IOC to host the Games is Sept. 1. So far, only Rome has officially announced it will bid to host the 2020 Games. baron-pierreIV
Interesting how they "decide" this just a few days B4 the 2018 decision. Well, it's the same country that conducted sneak attacks on Pearl Harbor and a number of Asian cities in December 1941. Stealthy doesn't begin to describe it. I doubt it will sway any votes tomorrow. If anything, maybe it'll make the Rome supporters press harder.

Not sure how much this could affect a 2020 bid. That is a HUGE factor, what with 4 VERY active Italian members...that will probably spell the difference between victory and defeat. Well, I'm NOT sorry for Tokyo-Japan. They've had their run...they will probably have it again in 2028. They just have to wait their turn again like everyone else. Which reminds me...I just got an email, a little more complicated...but it runs along the lines of : So that's the aftermath of the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki. gotosy
repercussion on Tokyo's bid Pyeongchang's victory could hit Tokyo's 2020 bidTOKYO, July 7 (AP) - (Kyodo)—Tokyo's shot at winning the 2020 Summer Olympics bid may have taken a hit after Pyeongchang was selected to host the 2018 Winter Games on Wednesday. Several members of the International Olympic Committee have told Kyodo News that Tokyo, expected to run for 2020 after missing out on the 2016 hosting rights, will have a difficult time beating the likes of Rome and Madrid for an event that will be held just two years after neighboring South Korea will have staged East Asia's third Winter Olympics. ... "The influence will be massive," one West Asia IOC member said of Pyeongchang, the South Korean winter resort area that had bid three straight times before finally prevailing on Wednesday. "I had already advised Tokyo to wait for the results of this election before deciding on whether to run again," the IOC member said. Another long-time member from Oceania who is on the IOC executive board added, "I wouldn't say Tokyo's chances have completely perished, but there's no question about the impact this will have on them." An Italian member who backed Tokyo's 2016 bid said the Japanese capital should go ahead and enter the race regardless because the Summer and Winter Olympics are separate animals. Yet that opinion appears to be in a clear minority, with most members suggesting Tokyo ought to regroup for 2024 or possibly 2028. The deadline for the 2020 bid is Sept. 1. IOC President Jacques Rogge will be in Japan next week, when it is believed Tokyo will formally announce its candidacy. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9OA7UHO1&show_article=1 ... gotosy
Asia Olympics chief urges Tokyo to keep bidding (AFP) TOKYO — Asia's Olympic chief has encouraged Tokyo in its anticipated second straight bid for the Summer Olympics after the South Korean resort of Pyeongchang won the 2018 Winter Games at the third attempt. "If Tokyo is serious about the bid, however the result, we have to keep fighting for this bid," Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said Wednesday. "If we bid once, suspend the second and go for the third, this is a weak point," he told Japan's Kyodo news agency as he prepared to preside over OCA meetings in Tokyo. Sheikh Ahmad was expected to be re-elected to a sixth term since 1991 at the OCA general assembly on Thursday. "We have to continue, like the situation of Korea and Pyeongchang who went three times," he said. Pyeongchang, bidding for the Winter Olympics for the third straight time, was awarded the right to host the 2018 event last week, beating Munich, Germany, and the French town of Annecy. In 2009, Tokyo, Madrid and Chicago lost to Rio de Janeiro in the race to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. But Tokyo's governor Shintaro Ishihara has repeatedly said his city has ambitions to stage another Summer Olympics in 2020 -- which would be its first since 1964 -- as a boost to Japan's recovery from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. "With good marketing, with good lobbying, Tokyo is Tokyo and it will have a good chance," Sheikh Ahmad said. "It's very important to Asia that we believe in the bid, and it's very important to keep working on the success of that." AFP

IOC chief says Tokyo should go forward with bidTOKYO — Tokyo should not be discouraged from bidding for the 2020 Olympics just because South Korea has won the right to host the 2018 winter games, the head of the International Olympic Committee said Thursday. Citing several examples, like Athens in 2004 and Turin in 2006, IOC president Jacques Rogge pointed out the IOC has no formal opposition to hosting successive games on the same continent. "There is a perception that there is an automatic rotation of countries but this is not the case," Rogge said at a press conference.
