baron-pierreIV
ABC/ESPN/Univision have just concluded the purchase of the US market TV rights for the 2010/14 men's World Cup and the 2007/11 Women's WCs at record-setting prices. $100 million for the English-language rights for those 4 sets of Games. That's a 150% increase over the 2002-2006 men's WC (which therefore went for only $40 million). An even bigger pot is for the US-Spanish-language market rights which Univision is paying $325 million for the 2010 and 2014 Cups (and women's 2007-2011) — up from the $150 million it paid for the 2002/06 Cups. That $325 million is almost as much as what ABC paid for the Calgary Olympics. Full story: US TV rights for WCs 2010-2014 sold at record prices!! And what all this means is that combined, the English and Spanish broadcast rights for the WC when they are held in the US in 2018 (and adding the 2022 WC-- perhaps in Europe?), could probably bring at least $800 million to FIFA!! No chump change. Definitely at these escalations, we will see WC 2018 back in the U.S.
BTHarner
I certainly hope you're right about 2018. The summer of 1994 was a magical time for soccer fans in the USA, and I hope I will see it again in my lifetime. In the meantime it is nice to know my viewing destination for the next three World Cups, plus the two Women's World Cups. I never want to go through the anguish of four years ago, when there was some genuine uncertainty whether there would be any English language coverage until about six months to go. Rob2012
The BBC and ITV paid £120-150m for the 2002 rights - and that's just the UK. These were bought from Kirch, a German firm who owned the non-US rights. They bought these for around $2.2bn. The US isn't the only country who pays big bucks for this tournament as you can see. Nice try Baron but 2018 is still wide open.

Rogerioandrade
It´s not likely. With 2010 in Africa and probably 2014 in South America, FIFA may choose anywhere in Europe for 2018. Would Fifa make three consecutive WC not going to Europe?? I doubt so. Anyway, another WC in USA would be great.
baron-pierreIV
Would Fifa make three consecutive WC not going to Europe?? Longest running argument on GamesBids, Part XXXXMMMVVIIII, Y not? I think 2018 to the U.S.
Mikel
Y not? Better: Why should go the WC to the USA twince in 24 years? :suspect: OF COURSE 2018 WILL GO TO EUROPE, NEVER THE WC HAS GONE THREE TIMES OUT OF EUROPE AND NEVER THE WC WILL GO THREE TIEMES OUT OF EUROPE, SORRY

baron-pierreIV
The next World Cup in North America will not be untill after China has hosted and even then it'll will be in Mexico. No. Not really. China where the 2003 Women's WC was cancelled due to SAARS? No, the US will get a 2nd WC before Mexico does. Do you think SoccerUSA will allow that to happen? It's been played 2x in Mexico. It's due for a 2nd run in the U.S.

Your bid won in 1994 because you were fighting against Morocco, but there won't be any more Moroccos in the future and the UEFA won't support you, so... BYE BYE ESTADOS UNIDOS! The world of football will revolt if the US gets the World Cup back before a) old-school and powerhouses of European football, i.e. England, Spain, Italy, Germany, etc., or before newer countries and continents who have no really hosted before, i.e. China, Turkey, Eastern Europe. Does the list have to go on? You are on a hiding to nothing if you keep believing that the US will get another World Cup so soon. Fifa took a chance with the US in '94 with a view to improving soccer's position in the US sporting world. It is a not a great sign if the women are a bigger success than the men still, 11 years on (24 if the situation is still the same come 2018)... blur2005
I'm pretty sure that a U.S. bid in 2018 would garner attention. Money talks, and we have more than anyone, I'm sorry. I do think that it would more likely happen in 2022, but don't count us out. For all the complaints of Europeans, I think it would be great overall for the game of soccer if it came back to the U.S. We're up and coming, and I'm willing to be we'd set an attendance record or something for certain. Also, I think you're a little blind if you can't even see the possibility, just because last time we were up against Morocco. And we will host before Mexico does again, I can assure you. Exactly. It's just going to be the USA for 2018. None of the weak, flatulent arguments the Euros have put forth convince me otherwise. arwebb
So how is it not greedy for an area of the world with so few nations capable of hosting the World Cup to have the same frequency of hosting as an area with far more capability? Because the whole cycle should pretty much start again. It is a WORLD Cup, meaning a global event. Far more capability? The US could get ready for this in 11 months WITHOUT building a single, new stadium.
arwebb
You have completely misunderstood what I was getting at. I'm not suggesting the US is not capable of hosting a World Cup. What I am saying is that CONCACAF as a whole has far fewer nations capable of staging the event than Europe. In that context, it cannot possibly be fair to go back to those areas with the same frequency.
baron-pierreIV
Then I guess: - Asia should have it 2014 rather than Brazil because there are only what? a dozen nations in So. America whereas Asia, including Australia, has some 45 nations? - And after 2010, WC should go back to Africa in 2018 since that continent has 50+ nations? No, I believe FIFA wants to rotate it continentally. Why should it just concentrate in one area? I believe they want to build a GLOBAL following -- and the one way to do that is to rotate its biggest tournament. Otherwise, going by your argument, then it should just as frequently return to Asia and Africa, as Europe??

Sepp Batter has already said that the rotation system will end after 2014, which will be in Brazil. It was only bought in because he wanted a World Cup in Africa, and they are readily inviting bids from nations in all continents.

Then I would argue: why is rotation only good for 1 or 2 continents but not for others? In other words, Sepp Blatter doesn't know what he's talking about. He even blurted out Australia as a possible host :laughlong: -- when even the Aussies admit that's a far-out, not-happening idea. Besides, Blatter, I think will only be in power until '08 or '09 -- or up for reelection then. So he's really a non-factor.

In Europe there are 12 nations capable of hosting (by itself, but if you talk about binational bids, then 25 countries can host a WC), but in the CONCACAG only two countries (Mexico and the USA) can host. In Asia only 2 countries (South Korea-Japan and China), well, three, but South Korea can't host by itself. In Africa only 3 (South Africa, Morocco and maybe Egypt). In Southamerica 5 nations can host (Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia). Then, the WC should be more times in Europe than anywhere because there are more capable host countries in Europe than anywhere!!!
