But then you risk... looking more like... Edited January 19, 2010 by stirthesoul
mr.x
From what I've heard, the interior of the stadium is absolutely amazing now...nothing like how it was. I have very high hopes.

mr.x
I've revealed nothing nor will I reveal anything. And really, civic and national pride comes into play: I want everything to go well...wait 3 more weeks.
IceNarcissus
Absolutely, X. The only thing I can say is echoing what ol Atkins said himself a few days ago to the press. Everything is on schedule.
Ruling Czar
Glad to be back after soaking up the sun in Barbados for the past couple of months! Gasp! I really heat the look of these pages now - so completely impersonal! Maybe it will grow on me. I'm wondering what Vancouver will be like. Maybe there will be no surprises. go time baby
if you go down to the plaza of nations, right in front of the casino entrance, you can hear them practicing for what seems to be either the opening or closing ceremony in one of those big white tents. about 2 weeks ago i was down there walking my dog and heard loud music, sounded like a muffled sarah mclachlan, and a choreographer yelling out dance instructions. now that the "i believe" theme song was revealed, i think it was that song that i heard. Are you sure it's "I Believe"? Cause that would mean CTV has been advertising VANOC's song for quite some time loll, not just its 2010 Olympic broadcast. And from the articles I've read, CTV wrote the song. And if it is, which I hope it's not, the song would have to be performed bilingually.
Olympian2004
That song would be a great choice if it really was the Games' theme song. Of course -- it's unusual that a TV network first publishes the song as its own theme and then it's revealed that it's the Games' theme in fact. But why not break new grounds in terms of "theme song publishing"? That way, the Canadian public is already used to the song and maybe the song has already stucked in their heads. In Beijing, I thought it was a pity that the great theme song "You and Me" wasn't published before the opening ceremony, was never played again at least in German television (apart from the closing ceremony coverage, of course) and was quickly forgotten after the Games. It never really had publicity here in my country. And that's something it shares with many other Olympic theme songs. Only Gloria Estefan's "Reach" is still occasionally played in German radio. So I would love "I Believe" being also the official Vancouver 2010 theme song. That way, it would at least gain major publicity in Canada and maybe even stay an "evergreen" on the airwaves. go time baby
im not entirely sure...it sounded similar to "i believe", but then again that was about 2weeks ago, before i heard "i believe". and it was muffled behind the tent and the "1 and 2 and 3 and 4...step, turn lift and down!" orders being barked! i gotta say that my first reaction was "sarah mclachlan?". i wish i had that iphone app that identifies songs haha. Hmmm... But would they dance to the tune of the Games' theme song? Not entirely impossible, but usually the cameras are rather focussed on the singer during the performance of the theme song. go time baby
3-4 mins of focusing on the singer would be boring no? during the torino closing ceremony, bocelli sang a song and they had performers dancing w/ the camera cutting to different things going on in the stadium. My link But Bocelli didn't sing the Games' theme song there. Nevertheless, I stand corrected: Even during at least one Olympic theme song performance, they had a dance performance accompanying it: Salt Lake 2002 opening ceremony - "Light The Fire Within" (performed by LeAnn Rimes) So will Vancouver copy Salt Lake in that regard? mr.x
Hopefully nothing happens to old Batsy during the Games...with the additional lighting and speakers on the roof plus the drapes, it sure won't help: Stadium roof deteriorated By BOB MACKIN, 24 HOURS January 29, 2010 The roof of Vancouver’s Olympic stadium worsened in less than a year, according to inspection reports obtained by 24 hours. FabriTec Structures’ service manager Larry Keene reported on June 12, 2009, that B.C. Place Stadium’s air-supported fabric roof membrane, sectionalizing, perimeter/ring/cone clamping, and cables/hardware/anchorage were in “fair” condition. No grade was given to related structural steel components. His Aug. 15, 2008, inspection, however, rated the six key items “good”. Both reports labelled the liner of the 27-year-old roof “poor” and included the footnote “very dirty”. Keene wrote in a July 24, 2009, covering letter that “the outer fabric appears to be structurally sound. However, the fabric is starting to show its age, without removing some fabric test panels there is no way to really determine the remaining strength of the fabric”. “I would assume this is an expense no one is looking to incur given the remaining timeline of the roof,” he wrote. Contacted on Thursday, Keene declined to comment. He hung up the phone after he was asked if a proposed pre-Olympic inspection occurred. The Games’ opening ceremony is in two weeks. Stadium management didn't respond to an interview request, but International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge dismissed worries during a teleconference. “We know of course about the two incidents that affected the roof. Our teams have worked very closely with VANOC and we have received all the assurances that the roof will not leak or blow away,” he said. The roof ripped and collapsed under snow on Jan. 5, 2007. An unattended roof panel inverted two weeks ago during a rainstorm and water flooded into the stadium like a waterfall.
graymccarty
Does anyone know if there will be rigging to allow people to 'float' and travel across the stadium (not sure what the specific rigging is called) on the roof? Just wondering... kind of curious to see how much weight that roof can take.
Olympian2004
@Mr. X: I find it somewhat funny that now that towerguy3 has been banned, you of all persons come around with that article. Until a couple of days ago, you couldn't have done this without the usual rants by towerguy3 aka YellowVest. And I very much hope that you don't suddenly adopt his "The roof will explode" theory -- now that he has gone.

Just wondering... kind of curious to see how much weight that roof can take. I've been told that there is about 70 tonnes of lighting, rigging etc. suspended from the roof for the ceremonies. So yes, it would be safe to assume it could support a few people.

Just out of curiosity, I'm guessing you're quoting someone else telling you it's absolutely impressive? You haven't had it described to you / seen it and come to your own conclusion? Just wondering because I'd probably appreciate your take on it more than someone else's that I don't know. Thanks X - I can't wait to hear your take on it afterwords.
