aluz
I have read that with those 2 sports, venues in Rio will be Sao Januario Stadium in the Marcana Cluster and Itanhanga Golf Club in the Barra area. According to the Rio OC, both were approved for their respective IFs.
DannyelBrazil
This is a thing that I DO NOT agree with Rio plans: Sao Januario stadium. It's a ugly stadium. Period. Let's see if Rio OCOG make big refurbshments on it.

Feheva
Rugby 7. It belongs to a football club: Vasco da Gama. Google Maps link

Sao Januario is the ugliest stadium in Rio.
wingspread
Estádio São Januário doesn't look that bad. It seems too wide and open for a rugby 7 match, but I think it's more financially sound to just use it than build a temporary arena.

aluz
It will cost more to solve this problem than build some temporary one... For deeply personal reasons, I am a Flamengo fan, I have tried to stay out of it, but Sao Januario itself is not unattractive but its area is. BTW, I think the money to renovate it won't come from the government directly, but through some kind of loan from BNDES like the ones that will be available for the private WC renovations. DannyelBrazil
The area could be a good location, but now, Sao Januario is placed between narrow streets - as we can see at the picture. Indeed, besides I'm carioca, I support Santos FC (yeah Sao Paulo state club... but from the shores...), so no-relation with rivalry against Vasco da Gama.... DannyelBrazil
And about Golf in Rio? Itanhangá or Gávea? News on that?
aluz
And about Golf in Rio? Itanhangá or Gávea? News on that? Itanhangá. It makes sense, since the access would not stop traffic in every direction. Itanhagá is also bigger with 27 holes in the field plus a polo pitch. And it is closer to the OV. Braz
I guess both would be used, one of them as a training facility. Gávea is just beautiful, one of the finest, what a spectacular setting!

Oh, I'm in good mood the whole time! I believe golf will probably be chosen (and rugby as well); golf, in particular, though boring to some is a hit in the largest TV market. And with several channels broadcasting different sports at the same time in most countries, the fact that it is dull for most viewers is not that relevant. Americans love it and, after the Chicago humiliation, choosing golf will be a nod to one of ordinary Americans' favorite sports.
micheal_warren
Golf and Rugby are both jsut been voted as Olympic Sports!!!! Rugby was voted on by a wide margin and Golf by a smaller but still large margin. Very exciting for Rugby to be voted on. Bring on Gold for New Zealand in 2016 for Rugby 7s

Citius Altius Fortius
@ michael @ roltel, maybe it sounds a stupid question, but can all rugby players play rugby 7s - I mean could the athletes, who are teammembers of e.g. Wallabies or All Blacks participate at the Olmpics or are these totally dfiferent athletes? Rob2012
Great that Rugby is in! A real, real shame we won't see it at London 2012 though. A properly big Rugby country like England would be ideal for the sport's reintroduction and including Twickenham in the Olympic programme would be great. In practical terms it's not too late to wedge it into the programme; nothing needs to be built and the games are played over a single day or two as I understand it. Come on IOC, move Rugby forward four years - we want it in London!! Well, I know that won't happen, but I wish it could. Golf, meh. Good for them, but I won't be watching it.
