Sir Rols
Actually I just spoke to the BASOC chair yesterday. Yes. we might put San Francisco forward for 2013; especially since the current USOC chairman is from the Bay Area anyway. She said we'll let the dust settle first and then she'll probably speak to SF and the USOC in the next week or 2. That'd be an excellent step, and an excellent city to do it. Crossing fingers. baron-pierreIV
Sort of OT, but Baron have you been given any indication that S.F. may try another summer games bid for 2020? Nope; a 2020 is NOT going to happen anytime soon. #1 - There is NO decent stadium w/in city limits to anchor the whole thing. #2 - The city's in the dollar dumps, like the state. #3 - I don't know if there will still be land for an OV in another 10 years or so. micheal_warren
I think it would be a historic event if Auckland held the 2013 IOC Session where South Africa was awarded the 2020 Smmer Games. Is there still anamosity over tha reign match in the 80s? it would be historic for New Zealand to host an IOC Session!
olympian
baron: if SF will be hosting an IOC Session, will Moscone serve as the main venue? I assume teh Westin St. Francis or the Fairmont will be the main hotel.

I assume teh Westin St. Francis or the Fairmont will be the main hotel. Should it come to pass, Moscone would be the conference site. But I think the main hotels that would service the confab would be those around it: the SF Marriott, the W, the Argent, the 4 Seasons and a few blocks away, the new Intercontinental. Right there you would have like 2,800 rooms already. In the failed SF2016 plan, the Marriott was going to be the IOC hotel. I see no reason why it should not be the favored one again. Aside from having like 1,018 rooms, it also has huge private banquet rooms, etc. The grand old dames of SF hostelry (the Westen SF, the Fairmont, the Sheraton Palace (which I think is the grandest of them all)) are a little farther away from the Moscone. But we shall see...

Thanks, I was thinking that because of California's situation alone that the city would probably not bid if the USOC decides to put forth a 2020 bid. FYI
That would be great if the U.S. went after & got the 2013 IOC session. If that were to happen though, there definitely would be NO 2020 U.S. bid then, since the IOC does not allow a country hosting an election session to have a respective bid city in that particularly race. I think we should go for that, & what a gorgeous setting for one, too; San Francisco! "IOC awards, for the first-time ever to continental Africa, the 2020 Olympic Games to Cape Town, South Africa in beautiful San Francisco! Two beautiful cities by the ocean!" Faster
I think if pattern holds because NA, Europe Africa and Asia are all possible winners for 2020, so Buenos Aires or Santiago de Chile.

Roux
Kuala Lumpur vs. Buenos Aires. Hmmmmmm Common sense would tell me since nearby Singapore hosted a session in 2005 that would hurt Kuala Lumpur, but with Guatemala City holding a session in 2007 and now Rio holding the games (and consequently a session as well) in 2016 then that might hurt Buenos Aires as well? I don't know. Since Malaysia is a largelt Muslim country, awarding them an IOC session might be a good way of reaching out to Muslims, since the games will probably never go to Doha or Dubai (Istanbul was the last predominately Muslim host of an IOC session back in 1987. Tehran and Cairo are the only other two.) Could be any body's game, of course I'm not 100% sure how this bid process works out.
Sir Rols
The other way to look at it is that it's are that a voting session takes place in a continent that's likely to supply the winner. Rio rules out a South America bid, so that could help BA. KL, on the other hand, could be hampered if Japan or Korea (wasn't Busan planning a tilt?) bid. Whatever, don't feel it's a deal breaker, though.
FYI
This should go to BA, since they'll (or any South American city for that matter) won't get the real thing for a long time to come thanks to Rio. Singapore does seem to hamper Kuala Lumpur since they're so, so close to one another. Guatemala City I don't think hinders BA that much since GC was a Winter election session, not to mention that Guatemala City is literally half a world away from Buenos Aires. But we'll see in 4 weeks though.
baron-pierreIV
it'll go to B.A. since there won't be a So. American candidate running in 2013. But that should bode well for CapeTown 2020.

spectator12
Do you all think that Pittsburgh, PA, U.S. should bid for an IOC session, since the city already accomodated a G20? I think an IOC congress would be less controversial. Also I think Buenos Aires sounds like a cool choice.---2013?

spectator12
Yeah, I wish a U.S. city was interested. I bet a TX city like Dallas or Houston could fund a bid; I know it must cost a lot for a city to bid, but if there was a lack of international interest I wonder if the committee would just give the US one. A city may be interested...but is the USOC? Like a bid city, the USOC is the presenting organization. If it isn't interested in playing host, then no dice. That was part of the rebuff of October 2009. I think the USOC is still licking its wounds and except for the upcoming meetings w/ ROgge in Vancouver, understandably wants to keep its distance from the vultures at the IOC for now. As far as costs, I think an interested city may have to ut up anywhere from one to two million for preps.
spectator12
I was really hoping the USOC would be interested in YOGs by 2022, but by then they will probably be focused on reno or something.
