Cinderella
I would like to state something now that we all know that Rio is the winner. It's been a long race, extremely tight, and full of unexpected decisions at the end. I reckon it's quite fair to post now that many of you, GB posters, have been wrong in assuming that was just a Chicago vs. Rio race. All the excitement lived today should remember you that there is no real speculation regarding to the IOC. Let the next race will be, at least, empty of pre-biased ideas about geopolitics and may the best bid be supported by the most of us. It's been really boring for us, Madrid supporters, to see our bid systematically underestimated during the whole race. Now that we know (for second time in a row), that we have one of the best projects in the Olympic race, at least better than other for the eyes of the IOC, I kindly ask you to not disregard any bid in the future, because if not the race becomes quite boring and this is about excitement Rio, enjoy your night!! Athan
You're right Cinderella, I couldn't believe it when Rogge said Chicago was the first eliminated, ending this Olympic race worse than Tokyo or Madrid, cities that would have been with no doubts the first and second falling. I'm sad because Madrid was about to get the Games but I'm happy too because, as I had previously said here, Rio was my second favourite. Let's sing all together Cidade Maravilhosa, coração do meu Brasil

dc_sf
^^^^^^^ As a Chicago resident for 3 years (originally from San Francisco) who has been following this race the past couple of years, my sentiments exactly! This race has been exhausting, and it's time to move on. Felicidades a Rio!
Dinhu4ever
I think Madrid ought to be really proud. Their bid was incredibly good in my opinion. Sure, some people (myself included here) said it was a terrible time to bid, but with sheer determination and knowledge of how solid their bid was, they went with all might and showed how strong the rest of the IOC thought their bid to be! We'll hear great things from Madrid in the future, I'm sure! And thanks for you nice words! =]

Rob2012
This forum only reflects the wider world. We can only comment on what we hear from news media, other people, past races etc. History told us two Olympics in a row in the same continent was very, very unlikely. This forum made the same mistake the rest of the world made in dismissing Madrid completly, but why should you expect this forum to be different from the rest of the world? We're all human. Geopolitics still exists, Rio won. It'd be stupid not to comment on it in future because it undoubtedly is a factor, and a fairly big one at that. So congrats to Madrid for a fantastic fight, but there will always be bids which are considered less likely winners than others based on a variety of factors. There'd be no point speculating (which is what this forum is about) if we're forced to treat each bid with having an equal chance.

Exactly, it was still a 2-1 (66 v. 32) result -- which meant that 2/3rds of the membership does NOT WANT back-to-back Games in the same continent. Madrid's final 32 votes are still Samaranch's lackeys who thankfully are far outnumbered and probably whose days are numbered.

baron-pierreIV
Madrid was only strong because of Samraranch, Sr. I mean after 20 years in the seat of power, of course a lot of people owe him favors (or actually it should be the other way around in a perfect world). The IOC is an old boys'club. When he goes, any Spanish bids will be weaker.

The order of elimination hid the real dynamics behind this election. The truth is that Chicago failed to secure enough pledged votes to go through the first round - and we have always said that no city was free from a first round upset. If you add to the elimination of Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid in this order to the actual vote counts, you will see that the prognosis done around here was not so far from the reality. Let's look in retrospective about what we have discussed here before the vote. 1. Madrid had no chance due to continental rotation, but Samaranch's power would get them a lot of first round votes. 2. Tokyo was too close after Beijing and it lacked enthusiasm. It was considered a dark horse that might profit from the early elimination of the favourites. 3. Chiago and Rio were the real players and one of the was likely to win, but if they failed to secure enough pledged votes one of them could be out in the first round. All the predictions, or most, did not consider the possibility of them being out so soon. We had a lot of theories about how Chicago and Rio would collect the votes from a Madrid or Tokyo elimination. We had no theory for Rio or Chicago being out first, which forced by continental rotation all the votes to be trasferred to the remaining city. So, what really happened was that after the first round, with Madrid winning at the expense of Chicago, Madrid did stop. It got only 4 votes out of 44 released in the following 2 rounds. So, Tokyo and Madrid were never really in play and we came very close to a 2nd round win - only 2 votes shy. I bet that if Chicago was not eliminated so soon they will put up a fight. This election was Chicago vs Rio indeed. It was a 3rd round election won in the 1st round.

The others ganged up to make sure Chicago didn't get past the first round. But you got to be in it to win it. Sitting on the sidelines won't do it. BTW, congratulations to you as well. Thank you for conducting yourself so professionally here to me and to the others unlike a few others and they know who they are...
