Cardiff Commonwealth Games- possible stadium

Recommended Posts

Cardiff city football club have plans to build a new football stadium which will have a capacity of between 30,000 spectators- but the stadium will be expandable to 60,000 seats in the future.

(if required). The new stadium will be at Leckwith, opposite the current Ninian park stadium.

There is a possibility that the stadium could be used to host a commonwealth games, before being converted into a football-only stadium (which is what happened with The City of Manchester Stadium, which hosted the 2002 CG's).

There has been no official statement with regards to this, so I am purely speculating, and proposing a possible stadium, were the city to be interested in the commonwealth games in the future - ie. 2018/2022.

The Millenium stadium was not designed to house an athletics track.

I don't know whether the stadium plans are affected by the club's financial situation, but the site they are planning to build on is currently an athletics venue, so there is some logic to the idea of a Commonwealth bid, assuming it fits into the timescale required.

While I applaud Cardiff's sporting venue renaissance (cant be bothered spell checking), what they really need is a new Indoor Arena.  The Cardiff International Arena is a dinky hall that seats about 4,500.  For major tours, many overlook Cardiff, as there is the need for either multiple dates at the CIA or they need to play the Millennium stadium.  Thats the next venue size up - nothing in between.  The live music scene in the UK could sustain a 12,000 seat arena in Cardiff until other uses are found.

If the city does bid for a future Commonwealth Games, it will most definitely be different than when it hosted the 1958 edition.

If this new stadium is built, and the capacity is increased to 60,000, it would be quite impressive for a city of that size.

Cardiff has a population of 308,500 (consensus 2001), yet would be home to two 50,000 + stadiums:

- Millenium stadium- 74,500

- St David's - 60,000

Hope they build it.......
