Olympics-2016 Games could be the last, says Tokyo governor

By Karolos Grohmann

COPENHAGEN, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara warned on Wednesday the 2016 Olympics could be the last Games, with global warming an immediate threat to mankind.

Tokyo is bidding to host the 2016 summer Olympics with Chicago, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid also in the running. The International Olympic Committee will elect the winning candidate during its session on Oct. 2 in the Danish capital.

"It could be that the 2016 Games are the last Olympics in the history of mankind," Ishihara told reporters at a Tokyo 2016 press event ahead of the vote.

"Global warming is getting worse. We have to come up with measures without which Olympic Games could not last long.

"Scientists have said we have passed the point of no return," said Ishihara.

Tokyo has put considerable emphasis on staging a green Games with the planned Olympic stadium the first to be fully powered by renewable energy, including solar power.

"Tokyo is prepared to do everything to create the best conditions for the athletes," he said.

Hmmm. Is this an implied threat. Are they hoping to speed on global warming, if they don't win, with ....

Sounds unduly pessimistic to me.Bar a volcanic super-eruption or an asteroid strike from space, how exactly will global warming prevent an Olympics in 2020? Will the world be too hot by then for sporting events to take place? Will this put an end to all other sporting competitions too?

Is Ishihara trying to frighten the IOC into giving Tokyo the Games as the only possible green candidate or something?

Seems like a rather strange,down-beat party-pooper attitude to me.Can't see it working the delegates up into a frenzy of excitement somehow.Hope Tokyo's presentation will be a bit more positive and upbeat than this!!

Ishihara is always coming out with these kind of statements. He's a nationalist, he plays to peoples emotions.

Actually, 2012 should be the last Olympics ever, according to the Mayan Calendar. So somebody needs to update the Tokyo Governor on the issue. Because even if Tokyo won 2016, they wouldn't be able to host them since the world would be long gone by then anyway.

I had heard that it will be all over by 2012!

Climate change wont stop the games being hosted in 2020! Scare mongering wont get Tokyo the games.

Ok, that seems a little dramatic. I fully agree with him that global warming is harming the planet, but to say that the world will become completly uninhabitable in eleven years seems a tad outlandish. The Pacific island nation of Kiribati, which is perhaps the nation most effected by global warming as the islands are slowing drowning and wearing away, is not expected to be gone until at least 2040.

If he thinks we've only 11 years of normal life on earth left, isn't he being a little reckless with his time by concentrating so much on frivolities like Tokyo's Olympic bid?

It seems the kind of comment aimed at highlighting Tokyo superiority in the environmental side of the bid, but it backfired.

The world isn't gonna end. Not in our life time. Sure, global warming. Shrinking resources. Messed up philosophies. Growing populations. A hundred years or so. Humanity is screwed.

But until the day the Sun engulfs the Earth, it will just keep on spinning with or without us and life will continue.

Global warming certainly is going to start to hit the Winter Games hard. It's the Winter Games that have the most to lose here. I could see the Winter Games getting into trouble because of Global Warming. It is a serious thing.
