Adrian
Why is Obama going to Copenhagen? By Steve Chapman - Chicago Tribune I think I speak not only for myself but for the 295 million Americans who don't live in the Chicago area when I say that President Obama has about as much business going to Copenhagen to push the city's Olympic bid as he does taking up the violin. With two wars, a battered economy, an overextended budget and a health care battle to attend to, he shouldn't be bothering himself lobbying the International Olympic Committee over where some athletic events will take place seven years from now. A president's time and energy are valuable but finite resources. Putting him on a trans-Atlantic flight and asking him to meet with the IOC is not a good use of those resources. If the administration wants to help the Chicago bid, it's the perfect job for the first lady--who was originally given the assignment. Maybe the IOC will be so flattered by the presidential visit that it will succumb to his preference. But the only reason the panelists would be impressed is that the emissary is so disproportionate to the mission, which is exactly why Obama shouldn't undertake it. He has far more important things to do. Neither the future of our nation nor the success of his presidency will be much affected if Chicago does or doesn't get the 2016 games. But both depend on other issues that his trip to Denmark will divert him from. To let himself be distracted by a parochial concern like this does not speak well for Obama's judgment. baron-pierreIV
/\ Adrian, what a POINTLESS post. Is that all you do? Just quote other articles? Don't you have one opinion of your own? Well, sorry to tell ya, kid, but these reposting of articles here and there is NOT going to change ANYTHING. It's too late. The Chicago juggernaut is on its way!!

ChiTown16
That makes me laugh. Of course - it's so much more important for the U.S. President to clear brush on his own ranch than to advocate for a U.S. Olympic bid: CHItown '

Glad to see Obama has such a strong supporter in New Zealand, but again this is not about politics, its about the bid. I think Obama is going to cost Chicago the bid. Thoughts? Obama's effect on the bid is positive at best, neutral at worst. You're just letting your personal dislike get in the way of any rationalism - it's worth one thread at most. I never said it is about politics. It doesnt matter whether I support or oppose obama the fact is that it is clear that if the leader of a bidding country attends it shows they are serious about hosting the games. Obama is serious about Chicago hosting the games and that is commendable.
Athensfan
Everybody in the U.S.A. has freedom of speech -- including the media. Just because one journalist has a low opinion of the Games, doesn't mean that the majority of American people agree with him. A quick trip to Copenhagen doesn't compromise any of the other major issues on the table. The president needs a change of pace. Frankly, I don't even think "taking up the violin" would be an all bad idea for the sake of his personal well-being... Adrian, it is so clear that your only goal is to sabotage Chicago. I am disappointed by the poor sportsmanship. Champion Brazil until the cows come home, but why sling so much mud? The Olympic Games are a wonderful opportunity for the United States to show a new spirit of openness and sensitivity to the international community. One of the reasons we elected Obama is because we believe he can help repair the United States' damaged relationships with the rest of the world. That is what this bid is about and it is a cause that is very worthy of the president's time.

Kenadian
Why shouldn't he go? It is only a few days and really shows the US backs its bid...a bid that has a very very good chance of winning. With races coming down to a handful of emotional voters, a few handshakes from Obama could sway some of those votes. Obama is very popular overseas and I'm sure the members of the IOC from Africa and Europe will see it as a positive thing. And if there are any problems back home, well Air Force One is essentially a White House with wings and they do have communications systems to connect with DC. This won't be the first Presidential visit, not by a long shot.

He is leaving Thursday night, will be in Copenhagen for 5 hours, and then will be back in DC by Friday afternoon. He and the Vice President have been making personal phone calls to all of the IOC members. Michelle and Oprah are trying to meet all of the IOC members personally before the vote.
