Ibirapuera
Now that we know that Samaranch will be at Madrid's presentation next week , what will be the impact of his presence ? He's very respected between the IOC and he's almost 90-years-old , so just for him to show up and defend the Spanish bid it will certainly give Madrid some important 'emotional votes' that could be enough for them to go to the 2nd round. I don't believe Madrid will take these Games, but his presence can shake up some things, specially during the first round of votes - maybe, it will steal some emotional votes that would go from Rio. I still believe that Rio will go through the second round, but if it doesn't, Samaranch could be the one to be blamed for the failure of Rio's bid. I still think Tokyo will be the first one out. I mean, this bid is so...boring.
NYCD 2012
I still think Tokyo will be the first one out. I mean, this bid is so...boring. When eejits like you quit with "Tokyo is boring" statement, I could easily Madrid is even more boring if it weren't those nightclubs. Tokyo isn't some sleepy fishing village off the coast of Guam, ya know. You narrow-minded people obviously been to Shinjuku, Ginza or Shibuya at 2am. Have you even been to Japan or Asia before ? Those places bustling like sh*t even at 2am. I suppose the next thing you're gonna say is Seoul and Hong Kong is equally boring as Tokyo. Heck, Even a simple youtube search, can put your claims to shame.

aluz
By the way, Tokyo's bid has been the one created less buzz of all. They might be technically superior, though with some half-truths in the bid book, but they fail to demonstrate enthusiasm. Anyway, I think Samaranch will help Madrid get to the second round. More than that would be something really exceptional. If they pull that they might have a chance to win. Especially if Rio is knocked out at the 2nd round. But unlikely. I would bet that Rio and Chicago will be close in the 1st round, with Tokyo being the last. On the second round, Chicago will get the most votes from Tokyo and will be first with Madrid out. Third round will see Rio collecting the vast majority of Madrid votes and taking the Olympics to Brazil. Samaranch and Havelange are close and will work together at this. NYCD 2012
He said the bid was boring not the city, to be fair. Even so, Madrid has the more boring bid. I haven't seen any promotional events Madrid has done. Like c mon, just looking at those artist impression of their venues made me wanna sleep. A bunch of metal structures in a historical landlocked city... its like putting 20-30 Guggenheim Museum all over Madrid. B-O-R-I-N-G Tokyo definately has a more interesting bid. Nowhere else will you see a green olympics in the heart of a bustling city. Just the look at the bid plan, Historical and Tradtional venues side by side to Modern and Green one. Can you imagine the skyline as we watch the events take place in the bay area in 2016 ? And don't get me started on Japanese enthusiasm in sports... Exactly, its the lack of Japs here that make the narrow minded country bumpkin think Tokyo is boring. Let be honest, how many English-speaking japanese are there in Tokyo or Japan ? Not Many. Search "東京オリンピック構想 yes japan !" on google and you'll see the support of many Japanese.

FYI
Third round will see Rio collecting the vast majority of Madrid votes and taking the Olympics to Brazil. Samaranch and Havelange are close and will work together at this. Already dancing in Copa beach, are we. As the old saying goes, it ain't over 'til the fat lady sings. And NYCD 2012, you should really tone it down. You criticize the Brazilians here of not being able to take criticism about Rio or Brazil, but yet you, sorry to say, get all bent out of shape yourself when somebody mentions something you don't like about Tokyo or it's "bid" (or Asia). So what? No need to stoop down to the same level of dragging other bid cities through the mud (not to mention the name calling), like "c'mon, just looking at those artist impressions of their venues made me wanna 'sleep'", & making stereotypical generalizations yourself, like "we just don't get all 'loud' & 'crazy' like you Brazilians do for carnival or a soccer match", don't seem to be very flattering either. Like somehow that makes them some kind of hooligans or something & that Asians are incapable or too "refined" of such behavior. Cause frankly, that's just as offensive, if not moreso. Of the 4, they have already hosted. I guess Tokyo thnks they're a Paris or a London or a Los Angeles...only problem is, Japanese Olympic COmmittee, is that your city belongs to one of the aggressor and LOSING nations of WW2. So, close but no cigar. aluz, you may have the right script there for the turnout...however, Samaranch Sr., only got Madrid to 3rd in the last round. This time, there is the Obama factor that I think will trump any Havelange-Samaranch tandem. Samaranch is like Senator Palpatine from STAR WARS, an old, evil, unecessary presence in the IOC. Well, Samaranch has done a lot for the Olympic movement. You might agree or disagree with the way it has been done or with a whole lot of other things but the fact remains he only stepped down when he was too old to keep the job. Rogge is there because Samaranch aged, not because he was any better. And that's something everyone knows. I want to make clear though I do not admire him that much, I think he's done a good job but I'm by no means awed by his performance. It has been repeated a lot of times that the 3rd round of voting in 2012 was VERY tight and Madrid lost by one vote (allegedly a mistake or not, that doesn't matter that much), which does not mean Samaranch didn't do his job, even though he kept quite impartial throughout given his position as Honorary President. He might be a pain in the arse for some, but he is admired by a lot of other members as well. Lobbying this year is going to make the 2012 summit look like a an amateur's playground with 3 heads of State walking around. As if Obama will or will not show up, he's got quite a mess in Congress right now and I don't think he's willing to take the risk. If he takes it though, he might get the games for Chicago although the price to pay will be high: Republican Congressmen will throw it back to him any chance they get. I don't think Obama is willing to to that but we'll see.

I don't think Obama is willing to to that but we'll see. I DON'T THINK SO. THe Olympics are a "feel-good" event -- Reagan and Bush Jr. presided over the last 2 of 3 held in the US. Unless those Republicans (like the late Anne-Marie here...where did that banshee go?) are stupid enough to trash the Olympics...and you'll see how far that gets them in their districts, Republican OR Democrat. It's not bashing the Olympics. It's the "oh, so you'd rather be in Copenhagen with the IOC than debating health reform on Congress? You don't seem very serious about it" sort of argument that can weaken Obama's seemingly impossible battle over health reform. A great deal of his political credit is at stake with this, and you don't want to get it wiped out on your first year in office.

Kenadian
Samaranch is irrelevant. He had his day -- made the IOC some money, brought the Olympics to his hometown and got his Chinese fantasy -- but those days are over.

Madrid has done lots of promotional work - they have engaged their big sports stars like Rafael Nadal and Real Madrid footballers and have adverts promoting their bid on various sports channels etc. And where do you get "a bunch of metal structures in a historical city...."? Madrid's venues are architecturally outstanding (more so than any of the other bids IMO). I mean, the Bernabau, Magic Box tennis centre, new Madrid aquatics venue etc. Also, how is putting 20-30 Guggenheim in a city a bad thing? Tokyo definately has a more interesting bid. Have you read Chicago's plan - their bid focuses on staging the venues in the parks and out of all the bids is the most centred in some respects.
