aluz
Before any technical consideration let's pay respect for both of Rio's venue for one was the stage of magical volleyball contests and the other is the birthplace of the FIVB Beach Volleyball tour. Maracananzinho hosted the 1990 Men's World Championship and two World League finals. In the same venue, Brazil has beaten the almighty Russians in 1981. Italy began its 1990's dominance by winning the World Championship againt Cuba in 1990, then they would clinch two more world titles (94 and 98) and 7 world leagues. And it is the main venue where the Brazilian volleyball stars have shined. Copacabana is even more important, since in the late 80's a tournament involving starting beach volleyball stars (Smith and Stoklos) and prime indoor volleyball stars of the time (Kirally, Bernard, Montanaro and Renan) kick started Beach Volleyball as an international sport. This tournament was first played at Ipanema, but then moved to Copacabana for its second edition and remained there for many years - it was the World Championship of Beach Volleyball. It remained as the final tournament (a king of Masters) until it was cancelled due to a motion by the surrounding population. After almost 10 years, the Beach Volleyball tournament held in February had become the end of an Olympic Festival that would bring lots of people to the area during the whole summer. So, please respect those venues and respect Brazil which got at least one medal at volleyball events in 6 of the last 7 Olympics.

oakydoky
Some venues are far, some are closer... Yea, but on the whole Rio's venues are more spread out than the other bids!
Bezzi
But the most important thing is that the majority of venues will be near the OV. Rio still have a compact plan, despite the geographic limitations.
baron-pierreIV
But the most important thing is that the majority of venues will be near the OV. Rio still have a compact plan, despite the geographic limitations. Well, NOT QUITE, Bezzi. 33 miles to any venue is distant!! Of the 4 cities, Rio's is the MOST SPREAD OUT plan. Look at my sig!! I remember when I just used to walk to the lakefront in the beautiful city of Chicago AND just imagining the various venues there! But this week in Rio--we had to use a car to get to a couple of the projected venues...and our car RAN OUT OF GAS due to the distances!! Can you imagine that happening in 2016?? Bezzi
At least, for your lucky, our city have many gas stations and our fuel is cheap. And during your long travel you had the opportunity to experience the beautiful places of Rio. The IOC members will not care about the distances, wehave many beaches and pubs everywere. Bezzi
I don't believe you are here in Rio now, post a picture showing you drinking a coconut water in the beach and i will believe. Judging by your personality, you may be very old.

DannyelBrazil
It's funny all this criticism about distances, meanwhile 2012 Rio bid was one of the most compact... Now, the others bid plans say olympics into a park and suddenly Rio become the giant metropolis of the world bidding... Aff...
danfla
Maracanazinho is the house of the most successful volleyball national team in the world, what do you want? Oh yeah probably soccer should be played some place near the village not on Maracanã too. Copacabana and California are the most traditional places of beach volleyball history...There are some places that you cant ignore just because is not so close from the village. Bezzi
Yes, they can easily put the beach volleyball next to olympic vilage beach, but Copacabana is a historical site for this sport.

Sir Rols
And 35 km away from the Olympic village......... Bondi was a fair distance away from the Sydney Olympic Village as well. But if you've got an iconic beach, how could you NOT use it for Beach Volleybal!

Only kiddin - I'm actually not bothered by it's placement as such but was merely interjecting some facts into the discussion as I know the Brazilian members love facts!!!! Rafa
Rio's plan is fine. Not compact but thats how it goes. 25 minutes from the OV to the Olympic stadium is still a bit of a mission. Step 1 in any venue plan is make sure your major venues are within 10 minutes of the OV. Deodoro sort of makes more sense. Halfway between the main stadia and the olympic park. IOC likes that. see Paris 2012.

Bezzi
Tokyo is the most compact plan of all, but spread the venues into various islands is really viable? This can bring some challenges in transport and safety plans and also reduce the circulation area. The IOC mentioned this in the report. In my opinion, the higher note for "compact plan" goes to Madrid.
