Rio 2016--Please Explain:

http://www.gamesbids.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14949

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/wo...0,5843260.story

We've seen this in the U.S. since early 2008 in our political process--one side claims bias from media outlets and gain sympathy while trying to discourage and distract coverage of issues of real concern. McCain-Palin '08 did this repeatedly during the 2008 Presidential Campaign:

* The cancellation of the first day of the Republican Party Convention to "raise donations" to prepare for an incoming hurricane

* The insistence on delay of the first debate because of the severity of the financial crisis

* The near creation of an international conflict between the U.S. and Russia over Georgia ("We are all Georgians!")

* The repeated insistence that Gov. Palin's "executive experience" overshadowed concerns about her actual record and capabilities

And the Republican Party continues to do this in 2009:

* The "teabag" protests against the "creeping socialism" indicated by the expiration of a 5% tax cut on the top earners

* The focus on the years-old "wise Latina" comment of an exceptionally qualified Supreme Court nominee

* The encouragement of confusion between Medicare (a U.S. Federal government supported and funded program) and federally funded health care ("Keep the government's hands off of my Medicare!")

What can a Chicago team do to counter Republican Party strategy?

October 2009???

Any chance Rio 2016 and the Mayor would retract this statement? Clearly, the work and influence of President to President to IOC member isn't as transparent as they are claiming.

CHItown '16

Seriously... what are you talking about? Are you mad? We wore the ones targeted with this stupid episode... why should the Mayor retreat?????

Salt lake... salt lake.... salt lake.... buuuuuuuuuuuu it scares you, isn't it? You know what u guys up there are capable of doing...

Mayor Paes and Rio 2016 complained to the press about their portrayal, in a 3 month old, otherwise unremarkable, fictional TV episode, as trying to improperly influence IOC members. And expected the IOC to turn against the US because of the episode. Yet, the next day, the President of France both proclaims his complete support (and the complete support of France's IOC members) of Rio 2016 while also announcing a pending multi-billion dollar deal for aircraft and his interest in Brazil's newly identified oil resources.

Do you find these events curious or inconsistent or hypocritical?

If someone complains loudly about being unfairly portrayed, they shouldn't raise the same concerns about themselves the next day.

Ignorance...

Brazilian cooperation with France dates the first year of Sarkozy's mandate... France supports the Brazilian desire of joining the Security Concil as a permanent member since then... Lula had already talked to him about Rio 2016 months before this military deal was even in the news.... the only thing is that Sarkozy said HE WAS TOLD BY FRENCH IOC MEMBERS THAT THEY WILL VOTE FOR RIO. Period. Don't try to imply corruption there... specially because it's your OC that is speciallized in corrupting the IOC... SALT LAKE... SALT LAKE.... SALT LAKE....

Of course the Mayor and BOC should complain about the episode of "Law and Order"... it's really a "coincidence" that they used the name of one of the contestants in the show.... do you think so? I don't... and it's obvious it wasn't one. The only thing the Mayor and BOC said was that it was regretable that at this stage of the race we get to receive such kind of coward movement. I think that USOC is the one that needs to explain something here...

thorbr, I hate to say it, but you are the one who sounds ignorant here. Chicago 2016 nor the USOC had anything to do with the tv episode. They do not need to apologize, but the mayor who connected Chicago's bid, made it an issue, and thus should be the one to apologize.

I am sure that in Brazilian media, Americans are not always depicted in the most positive light, and maybe we should make up an emotional issue out of it.

I surely hope that Rio's recent moves back fire on them.

In the end of the day, the tv episode was inappropriate (even though I have not seen it), but I actually don't think an apology is necessary.

Rubbish. USOC have nothing to do with this.

I happened to see the idiotic posts from that "pequeno pênis-pequeno cérebro" peon, thorb, because you quoted it, Rob.

Don't waste your time with it. It is the Brazilian equivalent of jj. He is simply crude trash. He's #1 on my IGNORE list.

What is a "pequeno pênis-pequeno cérebro"???????? Stop prettending you speak portuguese, Phil' boy... you are the one that is a very developed trash... one full of ****, ignorance and prejudice. **** off...

pequeno pênis-pequeno cérebro translates roughly as small penis, small brain!

Baron, do you know something we don't? lol

Very roughly.... in a very ignorant way... as usual. No, he doesn't... I don't take trash people... specially one that comes from a developing country and pretends he was born amongst the traditional families in Chicago.... attacking others' countries... it's ridiculous. Let's see who "laughs last", as we say here, on october.

I don't endorse baron's words or methods or much of anything he says. However--

What do you think you're talking about?

Mayor Daley, probably the most influential person in the city, is from an Irish-American background--not 100 years ago, Irish and Catholics were two of the most discriminated minorities in the country and this city. Oprah and Obama came from middle or lower class families with very few of the privileges of a "traditional family" as you're implying and also rose to prominence despite the once very open discrimination against African-Americans.

Many of our most successful businesses and most successful citizens are from developing countries and our city doesn't just include people from developing countries, it celebrates them:

Sweet Home Chicago (to The World)

http://www.gamesbids.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14931

There are also several months of festivals celebrating the city's multiple cultures and the diverse background of its citizens:

Chicago Ethnic/Cultural - Festivals & Fairs

http://www.centerstagechicago.com/festival...iccultural.html

everything from the relatively "Anglo-Saxon" Irish and Scottish to the very popular Turkish Festivals, multiple celebrations of "Latin" cultures, and the Chinese, Brazilian, and Japanese

This is today. We are a cultural festival.

There's even multiple studios in town that teach Brazilian Capoeira and I have several friends who study it and who have been to Brazil to study with masters. And the significant influence of Brazilian cuisine on Chicago dining--especially in the last 5 years:

DSC01608.JPG

It's a bit theatrical but Brazilian cuisine and culture is starting to gain recognition in Chicago.

You're welcome to think what you'd like about how this city is but it doesn't make it true.

Salt Lake City 2002 was, according to Wikipedia, a matter of a few million scattered across several IOC members:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_Winter_Olympic_bid_scandal

Millions were spent on perks including all-expense-paid ski trips, thirteen scholarships, Super Bowl trips, and plastic surgery. IOC members were given deals on real estate, and their family members were given jobs. [1] [2] Cash bribes may have been employed. When the scandal broke, the cryptic "geld document" allegedly recorded personal preferences of IOC members[3]. Beside some members' names, the document contained the word "geld", (German for "money") arguably indicating such members' receptiveness to cash bribes.

And we, as Americans, were uncomfortable and embarrassed by those actions and caused significant legal action against the instigators and the resignation of USOC members.

Over a few million.

Not a billion dollars (tentatively) per IOC member.

There aren't that many countries willing to commit about $52 billion or so on their Olympic bids. A $52 billion ante-up severely limits the potential host countries. It also contradicts those complaints that Rio is entering the process at an economic disadvantage. This isn't how a country should seek inclusion among developed economies. Brazil's been underestimated, apparently.

So far, no one from Rio's has so far disavowed the President-President-IOC vote connection or indicated that they believe this is wrong.

Simply because it doesn't apply... Sarkozy has only stated what he was told by the French Olympic Committee... period. Lula making campaign, diplomatic connections isn't something wrong... as far as I know, this was also made by Blair and Chirac back in 2005... so what's ur point?
