I don't really know. My guess is that they don't see the World's Fair as "viable" anymore. Besides, I think this year will be the last time the USA wants to put a pavilion in an Expo.

I know.  Personally, I think it's kinda stupid.  But I guess, unlike the Japanese who are very "Expo-conscious," the various US administrations, or more specificially, the gov't department that overseas this (I think it's the US Information Agency) can't get enough funds from Congress to be an active member of the BIE.

Plus, with all the worldwide security issues in place (including the various onerous difficult ways to get visitors' visas), it's become passe.  But I think if San Francisco fails to get the 2016 bid, it might go ahead with an Expo bid for 2015 (altho the grounds would mostly be across the Bay, in Oakland - per the original plan).

EFFORTS TO expand operations at the island airport threaten the success of Toronto's possible bid for Expo 2015, community activists insist.

Officials with the the Toronto Port Authority -- the federal agency that operates the money-losing Toronto City Centre Airport -- will be on hand today at an annual public meeting to field questions about the agency's finances.

The airport last year lost about $1.7 million and was used by around 30,000 people.

About 400,000 passengers used it annually at its peak in the late 1980s.

"You can either have a busy downtown airport or you can have an Expo 2015 that uses the airport as one of the two main sites (for the world's fair)," said Marc Brien, of Community Air, which has a membership that includes many waterfront residents.

COUNCIL BACKED STUDY

In April, city council voted to spend $2.1 million on a study into hosting a world's fair in 10 years.

A report by city-hired consultants on the possibility of hosting Expo 2015 identified using the airport and the industrial Portlands together as one option to stage the six-month fair.

The airport would have to be closed if it was used for Expo 2015.

The federal government has prohibited the port agency from going ahead with a plan to build a controversial bridge from the mainland to the airport. Ottawa doled out $35 million to the port authority to settle claims resulting from that decision.

$4.5 MILLION FOR FERRY

"The cancellation of the bridge doesn't mean cancellation of their intention to expand the airport," said Brien, who added that a busier airport will result in more noise and pollution.

Port authority CEO Lisa Raitt said that with the bridge plan dead, her agency is spending more than $4.5 million on a new ferry. She added they're working to attract an additional airline in hopes of boosting the number of passengers using the airport.

"Certainly, it's a business unit and we don't want to lose $1.7 million every year," she said. "So, we want to increase the amount of passengers and people flying in and out of the airport."

The port authority is required under the Canada Marine Act to hold an annual public meeting to allow people to take a look at the agency's financial statements and question its officials.

Expo 2005 in Japan is now over. According to ExpoMuseum.com, it beat its expectations in terms of numbers of visitors entering it. The number was 19,355,021.

Anyway, we have a great responsability now preparing the next Expo, the 4th one Spain will host (after Barcelona in 1888 and 1929, and Sevilla in 1992). The Mayor of Zaragoza says something different will welcome you in the Aragonese capital in 2008 :wwww:

And in 2010 the EXPO will come to Shanghai, China. The theme of this EXPO will be "Better City, Better Life".

It's estimated that the 2010 EXPO will attracted more than 70 millions visitors.

Zaragosa, eh?  I have a friend who grew up in Zaragosa but have tried to keep away from her since she has tried to renege on some of her debts to my other friends.  

But I loved Expo '92; maybe worth going to Zaragosa, too - altho I am reserving my funds for '08 for Beijing.

"It's ours to lose," said Councillor Peter Milczyn yesterday, just back from Aichi, Japan, site of this year's Expo. "The timing is also right for Expo to rotate back to North America after several Expos in Europe and Asia."

Only two other cities are expressing interest in the 2015 fair -- Izmir in Turkey and Moscow. The U.S., by not belonging to the world organization, is not eligible to bid.

Milczyn said Moscow is interested in bidding, but a feud between the mayor and Russian President Vladimir Putin has cast a pall over its entry.

Izmir brought a 16-person delegation to Japan for the conference of former Expo cities along with sites set to host future fairs and prospective bidders.

"Izmir was very aggressive, to the point where they actually affected people negatively," said Milczyn, who is co-chairman of Toronto's 2015 bid committee.

Toronto's four-person delegation, which also included Councillor Brian Ashton, the bid's chief operating officer Paula Dill and city tourism director Duncan Ross, met with delegates who will have a vote for the 2015 Expo, and toured Japan's site, where 22 million people visited in 183 days.

Milczyn said lineups stretched more than 1 km, and people waited as much as six hours to get into the German pavilion and four hours to see a preserved Siberian mammoth.

Japan's Expo saw the country pour billions into infrastructure but it didn't market the fair much abroad and drew 95% of its visitors from the domestic market.

The winner of the 2015 fair will be announced at the end of 2007.

Not 2015. It is either 2012 or 2013. However, it could be a bit much anyway for the BIE to going back to THAT PART of Asia again for another World's Fair.

Couple of points I want to make here.

1. Is Toronto been finally confirmed to be Canada's bid city for this Expo?

2. Izmir is now Turkey's bid for Expo 2015, too? According to ExpoMuseum.com, it is still Istanbul.

3. As for the USA, it CAN bid for Expo 2015, but it will have a major disadvantage of having to wait until all candidate cities with national BIE membership are really done with wooing all BIE members. However, it will be interesting on how it will be received by them. Never mind that LV and NYC may be contemplating a 2012/2013 bid.

First, I prefer Istanbul and Toronto as Turkish and Canadian candidate cites.

And second, I am with a Las Vegas 2013 International Fair (like Zaragoza 2008 or something like that) this city is so interesting  ::

Vegas would be an interesting Expo host city.  But isn't it already an "expo city" all-year round?  

If LV were ever chosen to host; it would be like Seville, only worse.  Daytime temperatures in Vegas reach up to 115 Celsius in the summertime -- and then drops to like the 70s at night.  So, like the Expo in Seville, they would have to shade a lot of public walkways, etc., and then do most of the events at night.  

The new CSI (original) season is off to a great start.  

Vegas is desert terrain and thus has those temperature extremes.  It IS already a fascinating city.

That will be interesting, if Las Vegas does get a World's Fair, because it could be the first one endorsed by the BIE while the USA itself is not a BIE member. Never mind that bringing back S&R back into the LV scene again, if it can.

These cities, to me, are uncertain. San Fran is perceived to want to get Expo 2015 because it would be the centennary since the 1915 edition that the city hosted.

As for Turin, that could be much for me to swallow, as it has hosted the World's Fair TWICE before.
