Faster
actually most people thought, and rightfully so that stage 10 would be a bore, since there was only two climbs, it wasn't the most intense stages compared to stage 11. Stage 11 has two HC climbs, meaning they are the hardest in the tour, including the famous Col de la Madeleine and also the Col de Galibier. Though stage 11 favours someone like Andreas Kloden or Alejandro Velverde, even though Velverde won stage 10 Stage 1. Alejandro Velverde ESP 2. Lance Armstrong USA 3. Mickael Rasmussen DEN Yellow 1. Faster
at least Lance won the most prestigious cycling race 6 consective times. a record that will most certainly not be touched for a long time. Eddy Merckx is the greatest cyclist in history, we won 11 Grand Tours, Armstrong has only won 6, he also won the King of the Mountains, Points and Overall titles in the 1969 Tour, something Lance hasn't even come close to touching, and if it wasn't for a crazy French fan in 1975 we would have won his 6th tour, Merckx can not be touched by Armstrong Other racers called him the Cannibal because Merckx refused to ride tactically, preferring to go flat out at all times, and wanted to win every single race he participated in. During his peak years as a racer, he is said to have cycled over 35,000 km a year. While climbing the steep, severe Mont Ventoux in 1970 to a stage win, he rode so strongly and pushed himself so hard that after he finished, oxygen was administered Eddie is a cycling God, Armstrong will never be that

THey didn't have the same testing methods then that they do today? So some of those wins are suspect. Yeah, well did Merckxx come back from a bout of cancer - testicular or what-have-you? And to do it in a foreign land? ANd did Merckxx win Sheryl Crow? NO. So, little one, do NOT DIMINSH Mr. ARmstrong's accomplishments.

So, little one, do NOT DIMINSH Mr. ARmstrong's accomplishments. what Lance did was amazing, but no where near Merckx, Merckx had 500+ wins, 11 grand tours, over 20 classics, including winning all seven, 4 world titles, and more stage wins in le tour than Lance, and more yellow jerseys at 115. In that time the only performance drugs around were steroids, steroids have no benefit to cyclist, and are actually more of a drawback, PADs didn't come into cycling till the 80's and 90's when drugs like EPO came into into the forefront and if Merckx's acheivements are suspect than so are Carl Lewis' and so any other "great athletes" from the innocent age in sports oh and Merkckx is Belgian, not French, so it was in a foreign land, and he did face hostil crowds just like Armstrong does
RAP
Doping/anabolic steroids have been around since at least the late 60s; Therefore you can suspect all world records in many sports, including cycling and athletics, weight lifting, etc. They didn't have the sophisticated testing methods that they have today, or the strict antidoping programs that they have now. How do you think a small country like the old East Germany-DDR, was such a super power when it came to sports? Very likely Carl Lewis was doping; he just didn't get caught! Steroid use is still rampant in all sports with the dopers always one step ahead of the drug testers. Lets see how the Merkx of then would fair in a Tour de France of today? Doubt he could even break the top 10 in a Tour de France, against the cycylist of today, who is faster/stronger(likely due to doping), better trained. But then this is like comparing the baseball Barry Bonds of today who is doping with the Ruth of 70yrs ago who wasn't.

PADs are more a problem today than they were in the innocent age of sports, steroids didn't come into promiance until about 1975, and than the crack down started in 1980, but got more serious in 1984 at LA

baron-pierreIV
Faster - what 11 Tours won by Eddier Merckxx r u talking about? He only won 5 TdeF - 4 consecutive ones and then the last one a year later. So how can that be greater than Lance's 6 consecutive wins, so far -- and maybe headed for a record 7th CONSECUTIVE? So what rubbish R U talking about? Questions @anyone -- Just watched Stage 15 today... 1. Why are a lot of the Spaniards in ORANGE T-shirts? I thought Orange was for the Dutch? And red and yellow for Spain? Or is the Orange for the Basques? 2. Why all that graffiti on the road? I mean that is total visual pollution. Will they clean that up after the race? 3. And all these idiot fans -- who have no lives?? :suspect: Acting like total fools. And then pinching the butts of the riders -- I mean, such flagrant homo flirting on int'l TV? Why do they allow these things? 4. Where are the women riders? I thought women were allowed to race in the TdeF? Everyone, watch out for TOUR de CALIFORNIA in February 2006.
