baron-pierreIV Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 uhmmm....Carnaval is NOT THE OLYMPICS!! For an Olympics, a city thrives ON STRESS. Those are 2 very stressful weeks for the residents, THEREFORE, Chicago is used to that kind of stress...thus will survive well. Will Rio? Rio would thus FALL APART after 2 weeks of stress.
Soaring Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 Forbes is the king of useless city ranking lists. No need to further discuss.
Raphael Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 Forbes is the king of useless city ranking lists. No need to further discuss. Mainly when some cities are in good lists.
Soaring Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 No, in general (regardless of whether Rio is on a "good" list or not). If you want, I can find 10 city ranking lists with Chicago above Rio.

ChiTown16 Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 No need, Soaring. As you said, those list are useless. But if you are willing, I can read. Yes. These lists are ridiculous. I've lived in different cities and found myself less happy living in cities ranked higher than cities ranked lower and have friends from cities ranked high that disagree. The method is basically (2 cars + 5 people = 7; 3 sq km of parks + 30 days of festivals = 33) except adding different values and making assumptions that don't carry across different cities in different countries on different continents. Even in the U.S., the results often do not make much sense--If millions use transit daily then how important is street traffic? If a park is 3 km from the nearest residential area, does it really contribute to useful green space?--and leads to conclusions that are non-sensical even to people who live there. Aside from that, Forbes has a record of producing surveys that rank Chicago as less desirable than cities with significantly fewer resources and where people tend to leave to move to Chicago (this is the fourth or fifth in the past 3 years or so). Cauê Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 In Portuguese, Rio represents "river". But "Rio" is also the word that Brazilians use to say that he is smiling. Example: "Eu Rio" represents "I laugh" The joy of this city is in your name.

Soaring Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 ^^^ my very point for posting the lists is to show how contradictory they can be, and that they are useless.
Cauê Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 The news in the official website Rio 20!6 Forbes magazine survey finds Rio de Janeiro the happiest city in the world Cariocas’ spirit of celebration is one of the motivations behind the Rio 2016 bid By caue_photo Rio de Janeiro is the happiest city in the world, according to a survey carried out by financial magazine Forbes. Ten thousand people in 20 countries were interviewed to draw up the ranking, which placed Sydney, Australia in second place and Barcelona, Spain in third. Announcing the result, Forbes highlighted Rio’s landscape and its fun-loving people. The spirit of celebration embodied by Brazilians and cariocas is one of the motivations behind Rio de Janeiro’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Rio 2016 is committed to providing a unique experience for participants in the greatest sports event on the planet, uniting sport’s power of transformation with the city’s festive atmosphere. The survey was conducted by policy advisor Simon Anholt and market researcher GfK Custom Research North America. According to Rio’s mayor, Eduardo Paes, the result is further recognition of the city’s quality of life. “The world has discovered what we already knew: Rio is the best place to live and work. The city perfectly unites nature, culture and urban living. I’m proud to learn that the happiness of cariocas has won such fame,” said Paes. Anholt notes that the results of his survey reflect the longstanding reputation of Mediterranean and Latin American cities as non-stop party locales. "Brazil is associated with all these qualities of good humor and good living and Carnaval," says Anholt. "Carnaval is very important – it's the classic image that people have of Rio, and it's an image of happiness." http://www.rio2016.org.br/en/Noticias/Noti...idConteudo=1002
DannyelBrazil Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 No matter the list, Brazilians are famous for being happy...
