Or does the IOC oly hire from within? Perhaps that practice has caused so many problems for the IOC. Yeah, not even Peter Ueberroth who singlehandedly saved and rescued the Olympic movement from sure-extinction, has been invited to serve on the IOC. London2012, history has shown that the presidents of the Organizing committees, even the most accomplished and magnetic ones--Ueberroth, Michael Knight, Gianna A-D, Mitt Romney--are NOT automatically invited to join the IOC. I think the clubby IOC membership would find them too much of a threat. They would rather have one of their own...and then that person has to work his/he way up the ranks. A bunch iof old stufy men who will elect some overly season hand over a fresh face. Since the IOC is a self -appointed(sorata) board, there is no way to fire a majority of them and install new non-IOC people. unlike a corporate board there are no stockholders who can demand ouster, jsut public outcry and a mea culpa followed by a resingnation. and thats bullsh*t. How do you even know that Romney is interested in an IOC position? He seems more interested in a political carreer than a sport management carreer at the moment. FYI, the US already has 2 IOC members which is the maximum number. Any additional members would have to be elected as a NOC President/General Secretary or IF President / General Secretary. To make a seat for Romney means booting out one of the current US members (Jim Easton since 1994 and Anita DeFrantz since 1986) although the US really is due another member or two...the Swiss and Italians have plenty, although some are there as head of International Federations. Edit: And of course I responded before reading the post directly above mine LOL! but nevertheless...there it is. There are rules. Just because someone here is discovering the IOC and Olympic Movement for the first time doesn't mean the IOC and Olympic Movement doesn't have rules, traditions, politics, and a long history. In Copenhagen, he is the name that is circulating in off as the big contender for this position in 4 years... And that could be an handicap for Munchen 2018, even if the election of the host city for the 2018 WOG would be 2 years before the IOC presidential election... Sir Rols Posted October 5, 2009 Report Share Posted October 5, 2009 Surely the fact the host city vote is well before the prez vote means if anything, Munich 2018 would impact Bach's chances down the track more than the posibility he will be a contender in the future would impact Munich's. I don't now too much about Bach, she eems competent, so it's hard to judge. It would be good, I suppose, for the leadership to go outside Europe, but who's the best chance there? Having an African female leader would be great and El Moutawakel seems extremely component. Personally I do not care where the presidency goes, I want someone: 1) That is a strong leader, but works towards consensus over executive decision 2) Someone that wants to push the IOC forward, including moving membership more towards two groups a) athletes and specialist in the various aspects of sports management. Enough of appointing European royalty, though Princess Anne deserves her spot and so does Prince Albert. Also with both categories move towards a more proportional representation of the continents. 3) That moves the Olympic Movement forward but through a holistic approach. For instance, instead of looking at the numbers of events, look at athlete distribution across the events and see if events can be added while still maintaining a similar number of athletes. 4) And finally one that's words are followed by actions, instance of lip service followed by hollow action. There is no sense saying you want to make the games more manageable while continually awarding a Kuala Limpur instead of a Manchester (sorry for the CWG reference but Manchester was a well-run, in portion games that were designed to be suitable within the city and provide a legacy, instead of a larger then live white elephant games). 5) PS - Also someone that does not give personal opinion on bid races, or use personal influence to award the games to their choose. I believe the president should in impartial unless advised to vote to break a tie. Rogge is now quality of this, as was Samaranch. If Bach, El Moutawakel, or whomever else is capable of being that president then I fully support their candidacy. And I was joing about DeFrantz, there is no chance of an American.
