Is It To Late For Chicago To Gain Momentum?

Recommended Posts

It's a month and a half away from Copenhagen, and Chicago 2016, with some help from the USOC is attempting to gain traction in their quest to host 2016.

1. Recently the USOC released a statement emphatically stating that at this time their only focus was on Chicago 2016, and that there were no other 2018 or 2020 bids under consideration (this came after several cities released began expressing interest in hosting a future Games).

2. Today the USOC released a statement saying that they are indefinitely postponing the launch of an Olympic channel, until the IOC fully reviews and feels comfortable with their plans.

3. Chicago 2016 will be wrapping up their 50th community ward meeting this week. They have been attempting to air out public sentiment about Mayor Daley agreeing to sign the host city contract which puts the burden on Chicago taxpayers should there be any cost overruns. The city council is expected to vote on the measure later this month or in September.

4. Barack Obama still has not agreed to show up in Copenhagen, and no will know until maybe a week before. He might just send Michelle Obama, or it could be just Valerie Jarrett, White House adviser and chair of the Office of Olympic, Paralympic and Youth Sport.

So may question to you is... is it too late for Chicago to heal wounds with the IOC, and gain some momentum in the next six weeks?

It is like a distance runner going out to fast . Chicago Peaked a while ago and has bee stumbling its way tot he finish line. The Olympic Channel Frankly I think will turn out to be the biggest factor if Chicago loses this . THe IOC I think is having De ja vu all over again with the way New York 2012 went down with a revolving door of Executive for the USOC who really placed doubt in the memberships minds as to who or what they would be dealing with.

Chicago Domestic Politics have not been a friend to the bid either. An interesting view into the IOC with Dick Pound is in the Toronto Globe and Mail in regards to Toronto's failed attempts to be awarded the games . Pound feels that the IOC knowing about councilors and members of the public being opposed to the games for 1996 was the key factor that killed Toronto 1996.

The Words from a Man inside the IOC published this weekend seem like he could be talking of Chicago 2016.

Its so silly. The contract only covers the risk of the OCOG shortfalls...its the other projects taxpayers should be worried about...although since the stadium is largely funded by the OCOG, escalations could be interesting
