Britain's Bidding Streak

Recommended Posts

What a difference a few years make. First the Birmingham and Manchester bids, the WC 2006 bid loss, the 2005 IAAF champs ... and now this:

UK is sport fans' dream destination

(PA) Tourist bosses have dubbed Britain the "sports fans' dream destination" after it won the right to host the 2015 Rugby World Cup and the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.

Britain is now set to stage two of the jewels in the international sporting calendar within a three-year period - the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics and the Rugby World Cup.

Sandie Dawe, chief executive of national tourism agency VisitBritain, said: "Britain will be the sports fans' dream destination in coming years as a golden decade of major sporting occasions - the Ryder Cup, the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, the Commonwealth Games and now the Rugby World Cup - draws millions of people from around the world.

The Press Association

Britain now hot host for top sports events

By Robert Millward (CP)

LONDON — Not so long ago, the world's top sports events bypassed Britain because of a combination of poor finances and arrogance. Now they can't wait to get a taste of Wembley, Lord's, Old Trafford and Twickenham.

A decade ago, England's bid to stage soccer's 2006 World Cup was a flop and, when Britain was effectively handed the athletics world track and field in 2005, it had to pull out as plans to build a new stadium in North London were scrapped because of insufficient finances and poor transportation links.

What a difference a few years make.

London has the 2012 Olympics, Glasgow will stage the 2014 Commonwealth Games and now England will host the 2015 Rugby World Cup and the 2019 cricket World Cup.

England is also one of the favourites to stage the 2018 World Cup of soccer. Although it faces strong opposition from around the globe, if it gets that too when FIFA votes in December 2010, the next decade will become Britain's greatest ever in terms of hosting international sports events.

Keith Mills, who is on the board of the 2018 World Cup bid and helped to secure the 2012 Olympics for London, said the country was hampered by a perceived arrogance.

"The general impression was that we were an arrogant country who thought we knew it all," he said. "We now go into bids with a very different attitude.

"Rather than telling everyone how great we are, we ask them what sort of competition they want. Listening is the best form of selling."

The 2015 Rugby World Cup and 2013 Rugby League equivalent were the latest captures on Tuesday and, with grounds already in existence to stage them, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the nation was ideally equipped to handle all these events.

"The Rugby World Cup is yet another tremendous event to add to the country's decade of sport and another chance to show our nation's passion for sport and what world-class facilities we have to offer," he said.

The rebuilt 90,000 capacity Wembley Stadium is one of 11 grounds being used for the rugby championship and will also host the 2011 Champions League final, European soccer's premier club competition.

The home of English rugby, Twickenham now has a capacity of 82,000 while the Rugby Football Union will also use soccer grounds such as the 76,000-capacity Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, Arsenal's 60,000 Emirates Stadium, Newcastle's St. James' Park (52,000) and Liverpool's Anfield (45,000).

Although it is in Wales, Cardiff's 74,000-capacity Millennium Stadium is another option.

The soccer grounds also play a major part in England's bid to stage the World Cup in 2018 for the first time since England won the title in 1966. England successfully staged the European Championship in 1996 and it was on that basis that it decided to bid for the 2006 World Cup despite having reportedly pledged to support Germany.

The Football Association's bid ended after the first two rounds of voting when FIFA's executive committee gave it to the Germans, just ahead of South Africa. FIFA did not go along with England's campaign that the World Cup should go to the game's inventors.

Ten years on, the tourism industry is looking forward to seeing millions of sports fans heading to the UK to watch the big events staged here.

"Britain will be the sports fans' dream destination in coming years as a golden decade of major sporting occasions draws millions of people from around the world," said Sandie Dawe, chief executive of national tourism agency VisitBritain.

"A third of potential visitors to Britain would be very likely to watch sporting events here. We have a real opportunity to raise awareness of destinations with unique links to different sports, of our cathedrals of sport like Lord's, Wimbledon, the Millennium Stadium and (Glasgow's) Hampden Park, and our remarkably varied sporting calendar."

Don't know whether this kind of coverage is now a help or a hindrance in the quest for final jewel - WC 2018.

Well Generally it can harm their chances because in regards to domestic sponsorship a Great Britain increasingly with a Commercial Sector that is being asked to pony up for the Olympics , Commonwealth Games and Rugby Worlds could indeed be very much tapped out for a World Cup of Football. Considering the Banking Sector has gone through what it has in the UK and that sectors largest player in the UK is the Title sponsor of the Premiership League there may not be the incentive to invest in an area you already have a huge presence in. You look to the state of British Airways and their problems actually paying employees. Places like Russia , Spain and Australia don't have that possible issue ironically thanks to the UKs winning streak. This could be part of the reason for both the 2018 and 2022 WC being awarded at the same time. It could very well be Australia for 2018 and England for 2022. I have a feeling that America could be one of the winners at the expense of someone who right now barely having the inventory of venues . The El darodo is America in regards to all sports festivals no matter what especially if you are a sport that can't grow much more in Europe.

Of coarse the World Cup could be totally devoid of UK domestic sponsorship and actually occur in 2018 . It all depends on what type form quid pro quo Sebastan Coe will have to engage in to get votes like he did in regards to New Delhi staging the Commonwealth Games in exchange for support for the London Olympics. I am sure the four African votes will have some huge gestures thorwn their way.

That sentence proves to me you don't understand this country and its sporting culture. If you lived here you wouldn't think that, you really wouldn't.

The market will have picked up by then, and I'm not sure there is a saturation point when it comes to our national sport for sponsors. It's estimated England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008 cost the British economy at least £1bn. A world cup on home soil in 2018 would have more than the opposite effect and I'm certain companies will be falling over themselves to be a part of it. There will be nothing else talked about in and leading up to 2018 - companies would be stupid not to associate themselves with an event which, in terms of the national phyche, will be far bigger than London 2012. Trust me, sponsorship will not be an issue.

sure it will , Really to me it is a matter of 2018 or 2022 England will host. I am sure Seb Coe probably made the Journey to your most unfavorite place in the world Earlier this month mainly Abuja not just for promoting the London 2012 but also to probably talk with Dr Amous Adamu the Fifa Executive member from Nigeria. With Jack Warner a Thorn in the side of an English Bid you will certainly need to sweep Africa for the Four Votes to Counter Warners allies in the Americas who would have a great vested interest in staging the world cup in America.

If Abuja wants the Commonwealth Games then delivering 7 UK votes to their column could probably done Quid Pro Quo for the 4 from Africa for England 2018 WC. It can be a very interesting dynamic as crowning of Australia 2018 for a Dr Adamu and his friends in Africa could achieve the same thing for Abuja by knocking out Gold Coast for a CWG bid for 2018.

Then who knows if something could happen with Fifa and the 2016 Summer Games bid. CAFs president and Fifa Executive Member from Cameroon is also an IOC vote . Something given for Parties in that bid contest could be returned for 2026 when African Candidates are able to bid again realistically.

AH it is so good to be the Centre point of the Commonwealth geographically speaking ;) LOL

Jim, this topic is about Britain bidding. It has nothing to do with Abuja.

Why do you mention that third world city on every thread. Your obsession is worrying. Like I've said mate - if you love the place so much go and live there.

No one cares about Abuja at the moment. The Olympics are in London, the Commonwealth games are in Glasgow, the rugby world cup is in England with the potential and possibility for the world football cup also.

So why hijack a thread and mention Abuja. You don't even understand British culture as evidenced by how Rob 'educated' you in the previous post.

ROFL.

God save the Queen.

So if the sponsorship teams were to approach the Automobile Sector of the UK where would the decision be made ? New Delhi for Jaguar ? Munich for Mini ?

What about UK Shoe company Reebok do they take their orders from Germany as Addias acquired them a while ago ? Of course Nike is out because of Addias being

Considering the economics of an RBS of HBoS is now state controlled they would probably say why spend Taxpayers dollars when those taxpayers indeed are both our customers and shareholders by no choice of there own . Unless Virgin or Dyson changes to sports sponsorship in a huge way beyond on team Formula One for maybe a year the potential in 2018 may be limited for England. 2022 and a clearer picture with some breathing space for sponsors may be what happens.

don't get me wrong the Money may be there but how much good will can a company buy with Sponsorship for Sports Festival if a marketplace of 65 million is saturated with four sports festivals in the space of 6 years. How many times can you go to the well of BT , BA and others domestically considering BA today is having a hard time paying employees ?

If Chicago 2016 loses to lets say Rio 2016 then it really opens up a Giant opportunity for FIFA and Jack Warners allies. The US has had the most successful Wc ever hosted from attendance and economics and going back to a market place that doesn't have potential sponsors pestered for 3 other sports festivals in the space of 3 years would probably be more attractive . Especially with the US economy that remains the overwhelming largest on earth.

So England should not host the world cup because hypothetcally Reebok, Jaguar and mini have oversees influence? What drugs are you on jim?

Britain is one of the richest nations on earth and is the football capital of the world. An England world cup would be incredible. Sponsorship issues are not an issue - Britain has a plethora of companies which can sponsor events and which ultimately would.

The American economy is the largest on earth. And................

Does that mean they have to be awarded the world cup over England when England has the best football stadia aswell as financial backing?

Mate, please educate yourself.

Great Britian (England) will always get enough sponsors in popular sports, even from Non-British sponsors. GB is (at least) the second largest market in Europe. Dont forget that.

Well said. I doubt Jim Jones is listening though.

Yep, because clearly there are only 4 companies in the whole of England and Richard Branson owns half of them. And his sponsorship budget only stretches to a sticker on Jensen Button's car...:lol:

I hope those banks will be free from state control within the next decade. Goldman Sachs in the US, for example, has paid back their government already and is starting to turn a profit again. HSBC, Barclays and to an extent Lloyds are all independent still, so it's not as if all UK based banks are answerable to taxpayers.

If you're right about saturation in sponsorship (and you're almost certainly not) and England wins 2018, companies are far more likely to forgoe sponsoring the Rugby World Cup or the Commonwealths than the World Cup. A World Cup in England will not have trouble finding sponsors. To argue otherwise is futile.

Wouldn't it be like 3rd, after Russia and Germany?

Germany certainly has a largest economy and most importantly control over their businesses.then they have control of Rebok , Bentley and Mini.

I suppose Emirates Air Might want to sponsor an England 2018 that will probably not use the Stadium they bought naming rights Too !!!!

maybe they would sponsor the games played in the London 2012 stadium which is being touted by Fifa for 2018 or 2022.

Its great we've got so many events. From a selfish point of view its going to be an awesome decade as a sports fan watching some of the best sports in the world come to the UK, on top of our regular calendar of great events like the Open, Wimbledon, F1, FA Cup, Premierleague, London Marathon etc. It will be a decade to remember. France nearly did it too (1998-2012)

And how rich is that economy when it comes to owning English football Teams ? Manchester United owned by an American , Liverpool an American , Aston Villa an American . Chelsea a Russian , Manchester city a UAE owner. Portsmouth UAE ownership. Sutherland an American , West Ham a Norway company.

Even Arsenal which is structured much like the Green Bay Packers of the NFL with Share issuing has its larger stock holder being an American.

Newcastle outside of the premiership league is for Sale and no one is stepping forward in England to replace the current English owner . In other words pretty much every major stadium with consideration for a world cup in England has Foreign owned teams being the main tenant and your finals stadium is basically owned by the taxpayer Via a crown corporation being FA.

Aston Villa plays in a 100 year old stadium that the owner can't seem to raise the capital to either replace the stadium or even increase capacity. Stanley Park Talked about for at least a decade to be constructed , Same with Portsmouth .

If this so called great economy doesn't have a business class with enough funds to prevent at least on major city in England from having any Foreign owned teams then it goes to show there is not much of a business class in England. The is hardly a foreign owner in any pro sports in North America aside from an American owning a Canadian Ice Hockey team .

yeah seems like the people who get uber rich in England don't buy football teams it seems or atleast not ones in major centres. Considering the biggest sponsorship deal for english football seems to be emirates air it speaks volumes of sponsorship and owner involvment which seems to be foreign controlled and dominated.

If only England was more like your beloved Nigeria.

And Britain's economy is not "so called" - it is an objective fact that Britain has the 4th largest economy on earth. Oh, and unlike Nigeria we don't live in mud huts. Just sayin'.

Your American pro sports example is lacking - football is the biggest sport on earth therefore there is foreign incentive to invest in it and since the biggest teams are in England predominantly it makes sense that there will be foreign owners.

(Just like Nigeria's economy is owned by foreigner. ROFL)

Jim, you keep trying to start arguments by attacking Britain. Everyone is laughing at you. Who actually likes you ( except the tribesman you met in Abuja).

P.S. Jim, did you take my advice and get a boyfriend/girlfriend. I only suggested it so that it would encourage you to get out more and hopefully mean you don't post here as much. Also, as everyone here on Gamesbid forums know, you are a grown man who collects 'bad' photos of Glasgow because you are prejuduced against Scottish people. You said you have an album full - you use them to try and malign cities online by posting bad photos. Do you not think that is strange behavior for a supposedly heterosexual man?

I have made the text pink for you Jim - you just strike me as the kind of guy who likes 'fairy' pink.

I dont understand the argument with foreign-owned companies. Even the German company adidas wants to sell its stuff in the UK. Mister Dassler is a sponsor of BOA!

What concerns me is the possibility of reducing the money for other (not so much popular) sports like fencing, athletics, rowing or even cycling after 2012.

Valid point. Of course other sports must not suffer just to facilitate major sports events.
