Red Arrows to mark Opening Ceremony

The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) also announced today that the world-famous Red Arrows aerobatic display team will perform a nine-ship flypast in Big Battle formation to symbolically link the whole of the UK and provide a quintessential British welcome on the day of the Olympic Opening Ceremony (27 July).

Further details of the London 2012 Live Sites up and down the country have also been announced. The big screens, run in partnership between London 2012, the BBC and local authorities, and supported by the National Lottery through the Olympic Lottery Distributor, partners BT and Lloyds TSB, and supporters Cisco and Cadbury, will become fully dedicated to coverage of London 2012 from May onwards."

I need to mention from my last post here on the possibility of Sir Chris Hoy, Rebecca Adlington, and Dame Kelly Holmes as additional British Olympic legends in the Opening Ceremony. Though in the case of Adlington, her competition could start the following day and thus can't really take part.

The red arrows have been booked for the opening ceremony its official. Wasn't it the Sun that claimed they were banned from appearing, tut tut, they should hold their heads in shame.

Oh yes, I remember that "story" and the subsequent petition. Ridiculous!

Yes, but there's also text about this picture on the London 2012 Facebook page -- and it says that it's a giant puppet used for the "Prometheus Awakes" performance which is part of the London 2012 Festival. And it will be on June 22: http://festival.london2012.com/events/9000964245 So, sorry -- nothing related to the ceremonies.

Hmmm... They still have to test whether the torch can also be carried by zip wire. A hint for the lighting method of the cauldron?

Is there any testing still to do?

Clare Pelly: We need to test it being carried by someone on a zip wire - initial tests have gone very well. We're just making sure for safety reasons.

Nice.

Sort of has shades of the Athens 2004 reading of Mythistorema, which I thought was the perfect start to the cultural presentation.

I do wonder though if this central pivot speech is going to be read out in the style of a drunk, of which the character in question kind of is.

Still, positive news I think.
