Has the United States hosted the Olympics enough?

Recommended Posts

I am hopping New York does not win the 2012 Summer Olympics, because I feel for now the United States has hosted the Olympics enough times. There was 1984 in Los Angeles, 1996 in Atlanta & most recently 2002 in Salt Lake City. Do you agree with me & if you don't, what are some good reasons that New York should host the 2012 Summer Games?

Well, I look at it this way.  Since, 1984 Winter, North America as a whole has hosted 4 Olympics (all 3 US plus Calgary 1988), while Europe has hosted a total of 5 times.  If anything, I would like to see Asia or Africa get a shake at it, but that's not happening unless  they come up with an unbelievable plan.

I don't think NYC should be prohibited only on frequency ultimately.  Other factors perhaps, but not frequency.  Just because someone has hosted the party a lot shouldn't prevent them from hosting again.

Then let's say New York some how wins the bid & it could happen. Should Toronto have still have bid for 2012, because a New York would show the IOC would go to North America for back 2 back Olympics, or would they claim they wouldn't want to have back 2 back Olympics in Canada?

I don't know the full circumstances behind the Toronto 2012 bid, but my guess would be they pulled out because they knew the odds were too slim of getting the games in terms of the costs it takes to bid in the first place..  No country I'm aware of has hosted the games back to back or both summer and winter in the same year.  That fact would make it hard to justify such a cost, if not next to impossible.  They are better off to wait for a better chance.

no....there is absolutely no way that the IOC would have had Vancouver 2010 and Toronto 2012......Toronto 2016 would even be a real stretch at best.....

:D America can host on arternating years with Europe for ever....

The simple reason is the USA's MASSIVE coporate wealth.  That's why the IOC now gets a little titchy when there is a long break between US hostings, be it Summer or Winter!

The IOC is reminded that the whole movement nearly collapsed under it's debt burdening weight during the 1976 games and it was only Los Angeles that bothered to stump up with a credible bid, and commercialise the games.  At that stage they even offered the IOC a permenant home!!

Personally it would be better value for money if the USA hosted every 12 years a SOG alternation with Europe and the rest of the world.

France hosted both in 1924

USA in 1932

Germany in 1936

USA Winter 1980 - Summer 1984

Im sure either London or Paris will get 2012 so it will be interesting to see who gets 2016.  If NYC bids they would have a decent shot at winning it, if that happens it will be years befor the games come back to North America; Toronto might not have a shot till 2024 or 2028.  Who know Canada could win anouther winter games in that time.

It would be nice to see the game on a new continent, Maybe Dubai, or a Brazilian city could realistically host it.
