Mike601
You are all right, I fully agree that Beckham is free to do as he pleases, as we live in a non- communist state where people should be able to sell their Live8 tickets on eBay as Geldof does not own the internet. But if Beckham wants to come to my Pub to preach to me about his passion for helping the poor kids of LONDON where 60% of the kids are living in poverty, I will say; “oui Beckham Noooooooh!, You are indubitably exceedingly handsome and marketable; and good at endorsing products for multi-nationals, as I would if I was in your position; and I respect you for being able to keep your marriage together after the Rebecca debarcable; and you indubitably have considerable skill at taking a free kicks with your right foot; and I respect your taste in rap music; but don’t come pleading on my TV about your passion and commitment to improve the lives of the kids in East London – until you open one of your football academies for them” Similarly do I really need Madonna to make me aware about poverty in Africa when she admits she has never been there and hires the best accountants to minimise her taxation, and would never dream of investing any of her fortune to create employment for Africans? I don,t fink sooooh!
Suit U Sir !!!
If Live 8 is so bad, how come, along with people like David Beckham, world figures like Neslon Mandela and Kofi Annan were seen on the stage in Johannesburg and London? MercifulZeus!
When exactly did Beckham make a personal commitment to improve the lives of deprived east Londoners? I would have thought that he already has merely by making the association between his working class roots and global fame. I'm sure there are many youngsters whose lives are all the more hopeful with the knowledge that some people from similar backgrounds to their own do make it in the big time. What does Mike601 want? That everyone who has any remote link to a less than wealthy childhood should keep quiet about that aspect of their past, just because it sounds to him as though they are gloating about how rich and famous they are now? If it's about giving something back, I'd think Beckham and many other British sports stars have done plenty, and will continue to. Out of interest, how much does Mike do for his community? And does he think that by doing whatever he does, he has an automatic right to look down upon those he perceives to be underperforming in this area? Everyone can do his or her own bit for the community, but it's ultimately a personal choice.
