Stu
Because Mikel, for the size and influence of Spain, it's had its quota for a Summer Games in Barcelona in 1992. You make it appear that Spain is like the 2nd or 3rd greatest Olympic power and that therefore the world owes it another SOG soon. There are other countries who carry greater weight and influence in the Olympic world who would want their turn too. Don't take it personally; that's just the way it is. Sorry if my post sound so "Spanizied" but I only try that the people realise we are here, too. I don't know when (maybe 2020 it's a bit soon), but I know Madrid will get a Summer Olympics before I die. You mustn't be disheartened though Mikel, Madrid did enjoy a lot of praise in the 2012 competition - even if I would myself prefer the next few European Summer Games to be in France, Italy and Germany it doesn't mean all the members of the IOC will agree with me - continue to be an enthusiastic supporter of your city! I wouldnt be to sure Mo. 2020 is a long way off. Following an almost certain win by the US in 2016, Cape Town could be facing cities like Madrid, Tokyo/Osaka and Berlin. Certainly more "international" cities then Cape Town and far more financially stable. My verdict, i houneslty dont see Cape Town getting the games in 2020. Certainly a bid, but Madrid and a Japanese bid will simply offer to much to refuse. Maybe another bid in 2024 (getting pipped at the post) and then onto hosting in 2028. Rafa
nice theory aaron. i dont think the IOC can wait till 2028 for new frontiers...i see cape town doing a london in 2020...winning if not 2020 then 2024....in all likelihood going on the voted madrid had in 2012..although lots wil change i can see madrid winning 2016 regardless of the AMERICAn city...who if not now york i wont support... Madrid will be unlikely for 2016. If it did win 2006, 2012, 2016 (and possibly 2014) would all be European. Not to mention if Jaca gets 2014. 2020 Will slot in nicely for Madrid regardless of Jaca winning. Back to ack European bids in this new age of Olympics wont help either. I dont think they canw ait any longer either though who could resists a bid from Tokyo when the only competition is Cape Town, Bangkok and Rio? If New York can gets its act together next time around or Chicago does well in its first attempt. We might as well wrap it, stamp in a ship in straight to the US now. e1ena
Madrid might find it a little more difficult to win once JAS shuffles off this mortal coil (though I'm under no doubt that the IOC will probably cyrogenically freeze him to be resurrected as their eternal President in the coming centuries) There's so many cities that deserve the games; NYC, Rio, Chicago, Berlin, Moscow, Paris, Tokyo, Cape Town, (Madrid, just for you Mikel)... the list is endless! cphdude
Sorry if this is one of those newbee questions that are painully obvious to everyone else, but when is the actual deadline for the contries who wants to host in 2016 and when will the IOC start eliminating/shortlisting? ThrillosAG
I don't think that date has been set yet as the IOC is currently assessing bids for a 2014 Winter Games.
Sir Rols
Going on past cycles, the IOC will probably call for expressions of interest after the 2014 vote next year, have a cut off for applications early 2008 and later that year cut that down to a short list (if necessary). The only real thing we know is that the winner will be announced at the Copenhagen Congress in 2009.
