Federation of Labour is sounding the alarm over the new retractable roof proposed for BC Place Stadium. Federation president Jim Sinclair says PavCo (operators of BC Place) needs to do the right thing and choose a local company for the project. There are four companies on the short list for the $365 million project, including one from Ontario and one from Quebec. Sinclair says during this recession, keeping B.C. workers on the job is key. "That would keep over 150 people working. That's over $12 million in payroll on direct jobs, it means that those companies can stay viable, and that money that comes out of our pockets as taxpayers, is going right back into our economy." The winning bid is expected to be announced in 3 to 5 weeks
Sir Rols Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 (edited) And this needs a whole new thread because .....? Edited June 3, 2009 by Sir Roltel
towerguy3 Posted June 4, 2009 Author Report Posted June 4, 2009 what I can't understand is I thought it was a German company that was building the Retractable Roof. Those Germans must think us Canadians are a bunch of IDIOTS lighting a huge Flame like that inside a pressurized dome
Sir Rols Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Those Germans must think us Canadians are a bunch of IDIOTS lighting a huge Flame like that inside a pressurized dome Just like 99.99 per cent of members here think certain Canadians are idiots for being so bizarrely obsessed about the highly improbable or unlikely event of something bad happening from mloighting the Olympic Flame inside the BC Place dome.
towerguy3 Posted June 4, 2009 Author Report Posted June 4, 2009 Have you thought of the possibility that they try to light the cauldron during the ceremony... and it doesn't light?
Sir Rols Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Okay mate, here's an offer (I know you like these bets). I'll bet you a nice big juicy T-bone steak, that the flame lighting goes off without any major disasters at the opening of the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games next year* * Bet void if any problems or disasters are deliberately caused by the actions of towerguy3 or any of his internet forum pseudonyms
Rafa Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Why was the new roof not installed pre 2010. There was plenty of time.
Rob2012 Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 * Bet void if any problems or disasters are deliberately caused by the actions of towerguy3 or any of his internet forum pseudonyms Make sure you have all bases covered...you're not stupid are you?
Sir Rols Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Make sure you have all bases covered...you're not stupid are you? LOL - I'm confidently looking forward to my prime Canadian steer flesh. But just in case .... yes, I have my contingencies planned already!
olympian Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Why was the new roof not installed pre 2010. There was plenty of time.because a new roof wasn't part of the plan at all.
mr.x Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Why was the new roof not installed pre 2010. There was plenty of time. Behind doors, I'm sure VANOC was advising the government to make extensive renovations. Even as early as 2004, the Premier of the province said that he was looking at building a new stadium or renovating the existing one (BC Place). But real efforts didn't come until January 2007 when human error during snowfall and strong winds caused the stadium's first accidental deflation in its 25 year history. Until then, all of the focus in 2010 preparations seemed to have been on the sports venues, Olympic Villages, and transportation infrastructure....they basically forgot the importance of BC Place. There was also the possibility that it might not have been politically popular, as locals were cringing at the cost of the Games - despite Vancouver's modest plans and costs (and cost inflations) compared to previous Olympics (Torino, Athens, Salt Lake). Immediately after the deflation, work was done to create a plan for a massive stadium renovation including a new retractable roof. Preliminary design work was done by the end of 2007 in a rush or rather in hopes of having both interior, exterior, and a new retractable roof in time for the 2010 Opening Ceremony. In January 2008, plans for the stadium renovations were revealed and it was also announced that the entire stadium renovation plan wouldn't be complete in time for the 2010 Games....mainly because of high construction costs in a hot construction market (this was before the recession) and fears that rushing the job coupled with the hot construction market would cause the construction cost to go way overbudget. The timeline, less than two years, was also too short and far too risky. VANOC also needed to know what type of venue they were working with for the 2010 Ceremonies, and they couldn't make the switch to an outdoor venue at such a late date. It's a shame that they didn't have the foresight earlier...if they created these plans and tenders in 2006, i'm sure it would have gone ahead for 2010. But we're still capable of creating incredible ceremonies with the roof and stadium as is. About $110-million in interior renovations will be done in time for the 2010 Games.
towerguy3 Posted June 4, 2009 Author Report Posted June 4, 2009 I would take you up on your steak bet, except I haven't been awarded the steak from the JLousa / Orangevest bet. So I could end up getting two steaks, or none at all. If I can't get a steak, I'll take a Gift Certificate for the Swedish Touch
Rafa Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 oh no....why are they lighting up the venue in all those colours.
towerguy3 Posted June 4, 2009 Author Report Posted June 4, 2009 they better not forget lighting in my favourite color: PINK
Kenadian Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 There just wasn't the political will to do it. When you see how fast the London Olympic stadium is progressing, you can see it can be done, but there has to be something driving it and that didn't happen in Vancouver.
Kenadian Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Oh, and yesterday, I was out near the stadium and noticed they have some sort of staging installed around the rim of the roof...where the concrete bowl meets the fabric dome. Wonder what that's for?
towerguy3 Posted June 4, 2009 Author Report Posted June 4, 2009 That work is for reinforcement of the Ring beam. The Ring beam is 2,500 feet in circumference and weighs 9,500 tons and keeps the fabric sealed to the concrete structure. The weight of the new Retractable Roof will put extra stress on the structure so the Ring beam has to be reinforced, both exterior and inside the stadium also. Many of the fans that keep the roof inflated have been removed.
