Ms Jean used a traditional Inuit knife to help cut the animal then ate a slice of raw heart. It came weeks after the EU voted to ban Canadian seal products, but Ms Jean did not say if her actions were in response to the EU proposals. Especially if you do so to provoke somebody (like the EU) so near to your Olympic Games. I personally found it tasteless and not very wise since this can cause more harm than good to Canada's image. Seal meat is a part of the Northern diet. Just as pork, beef, chicken, and fish are part of the European diet. Canada's Far North is a barren place and is not as wealthy or sophisticated as the industrialized south. It is an "eat what you kill" culture. While this was probably a combination of bad timing for Jean and a good PR opportunity for the PETA crowd, I don't think it is anything more than the GG taking part in an ancient local cultural tradition. I wish she hadn't done it (especially at this time), but I still support the notion that the GG and not the Queen, should open "Canada's Games" in 2010. Now I really, really look forward to an opening ceremony where she clubs a baby seal in BC place, rips out its heart, barbeques it on the Olympic flame, and passes it over to share with Jacques and Her Maj before the dome explodes. Want it or not, the UN ban on seal hunt will greatly hurt the Inuit communities in the far north, and getting that kind of support from the GG certainly makes a difference to them. Really? Don't you understand the statement your governor general was making? She was underlying the fundamentals of a timeless cultural nuance of the Inuit people. She was making a statement of preservation of an astounding way of life that has thrived on your snow swept northern islands for thousands of years. She was not suggesting that the act was based on greed or self interests or capitalism but rather on the unique identity that actually defined the purest form of idigenous Canada before the zit ridden colonizers made you into a qusi-country. It was an act on a trajectory towards the preservation of a distinctive way of life. Ways of life, mind you , that are becoming, extinct. Your Inuit have hunted seal for thousands of years.......and the seals stocks were never exhuasted.....but add the invaders from Europe with good old fashion greed and you 've got a disaster!
