Brazil 2014 World Cup...

What happened to Sepp's wish for an opener in the Amazon?

... actually, forget it. It's Sepp. He changes his mind as often as his underwear!

Amazonas state did not bid for the opening match, since their stadium will not have minimum capacity for the opening match.

I am just watching a report about the preparation of Brazil for 2014 - and it was interesting that it was said that the basic fabric of Maracana is so bad, that it would be better to built a complete new stadium than to renovate it - wouldn't it be better to do that (especially Rio is hosting two years later the Olympics)?

Maracana can't be demolished, it's a national heritage place (in a soccer mad country this is pretty reasonable).

According the quality of basic fabric, there are plenty of opinions... In Skyscrapercity you can find good arguments for both sides. :)

Hey peepz, few days ago during corinthians' 101 years celebration party Corinthians finalized the deal with Odebrecht (contractor) to build the stadium.

Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was there to celebrate COrinthians' 101th anniversary alongside with thousand of fans.

Some pics of the contract of the celebration:

Not much news about the WC.

The big news is that Maracana workers are striking out since last week. This week they plan to protest in the streets around maracanã.

Source here.

It says the strike out delays may cause problems for Maracana. It may not be ready at the deadline of December 2012.

But...

Brazil's preparations for the 2014 World Cup have been hit after a Federal Court judge ordered work on a new third terminal in São Paulo's main international airport, Guarulhos, to stop.

São Paulo is set to host the opening game of the World Cup, and construction recently began on the Itaquera stadium, which will stage this match.

The country is desperately trying to increase air capacity to meet demand in time for the 2014 competition, as well as for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, but Judge Louise Vilela Filgueiras Borer ruled that state airport authority Infraero had awarded a contract to Delta Constructions without going through the appropriate process.

By avoiding the bidding process Filgueiras said that a "dangerous precedent" could be set and that the urgency of the works did not mean this could be bypassed.

The 1.2 billion reais (£440 million/$700 million) project is set to more than double the airport's capacity to accommodate 52.7 million passengers by 2014 - work that is much needed to meet the growing demands placed on it as air traffic continues to rise dramatically throughout the country.

A report earlier this year warned that the majority of Brazil's airports would not be ready on time for 2014 unless work on them sped up rapidly.

Infraero have been looking to privatise the upgrades to the airports as a result, with São Paulo being most in need of such works as the biggest city in South America.

Justice authorizes return of works of terminal

The Advocacy General of the Union (AGU) reported last night that managed in court resuming construction of the remote terminal to passengers at the International Airport of Guarulhos. Injunction granted on Monday by the Federal Court Guarulhos to paralyze works served the action of the Federal Public Ministry. The court questions the adoption of an emergency basis, and consequently without bidding for the works.

The Brazilian Airport Infrastructure Company (Infraero) argues that because of the proximity of the 2014 World Cup there is an urgency in implementing the construction of the terminal. According to the AGU, the shutdown of the terminal building would represent a "serious" damage to the State and users of air transport.

The hiring of the construction company Delta by letter invitation was defended today by President Dilma Rousseff. "We did not do the urgent and emergency because of 2014, we did to attend Guarulhos now in December. There is a commitment of the company to deliver the project by December. Now, if you interrupt, nor the federal government nor the company can be blamed", she said.

Guys, you don't understand how thing goes in Brazil.

Again and again: bureaucracy... The damn Iberic heritage we have of lots of documents, allowances and fines....

The preparations for the World Cup will be full of justice orders and disorders and stirkes out and then they cancel the strikes... And everything will be built in this way... UNFORTUNATELLY.

Don't worry, guys, at the end, the stadiums will be ready 3 weeks before the first match, the airports will work smoothly with temporary modules and the promised transportation works for the World Cup will be also working nice, but the 100% of the works will be ready 3 weeks before the Olympic Games. wink.gif

(Still, I don't like the "Brazilian way", but at least, everything works... always almost breaking the deadline sad.gif)

Fifa threatened to take Maracanã out of the Confed. Cup due to delays.

Here:

Exclusive - FIFA Says Maracana Strike Action Threatens 2013 Confeds Cup Role

WFI) FIFA tells INSIDER that the second work stoppage in a month at the Maracana, the centrepiece of the Brazil 2014 World Cup, has world football's governing body worried.

Workers rally outside the main gate to the iconic Maracana (Getty Images)

“Naturally we are concerned about any delays in the construction of the stadiums and infrastructure for whatever reason,” a FIFA spokesman said.

“The delays for sure pose a risk for Maracana to be excluded from the [2013] FIFA Confederations Cup if they cannot be completed by end of 2012 with the renovations.”

First opened in 1950, the famed stadium in Rio de Janeiro is set to host matches in the 2013 Confederations Cup before staging high-profile matches at the World Cup the following year.

But the ongoing strike action has sparked construction delays and raised serious question marks about when the massive stadium makeover will be finished.

A spokesman for the State of Rio, which oversees the reconstruction, revealed to INSIDER last month that the projected cost of the revamp had risen from $450 million to $600 million.

Work was initially suspended last month after a builder was badly burnt and suffered leg injuries when an oil barrel with chemical residue exploded.

Brazil's president Dilma Rousseff pledged late last month that work on nine of the 12 stadium projects for the 2014 finals will be finished next year.

Whether the Maracana will be one of those nine appears increasingly unclear.

To be quite honest I really doubt Maracanã will be ready in December of 2012 (FIFA deadline for the CC). The didn't even finished demolishing the roofs yet...

You can see it here:

They need to do a lot of things in 15 months..

I thought that was the "Indian way". Really, this post could have come from last September.

As long as we're not still hearing about the "Brazilian way" in mid-2014, that's ok I guess.

For sure, it won't be the same...

Indeed because Brazilians are very demanding with hygiene...

And it seems the problem in India was not bereaucracy, but lack of planning...

I though the roof was off already

Nope. The original plan didn't even included demolishing the roof. Only after the refurbishment started they realized the roof couldn't take it anymore so they needed to demolish it (IMHO they just found a way to make more money).

Anyway, the original plan deadline was december of 2012, now with the strike outs and the roof still standing I doubt it'll be ready by 12/12.

Oh, an very important brazilian columnist just wrote Maracanã needs a "miracle" in order to be ready for the Confed. Cup. He says that in a month during FIFA's conference they'll announce the exclusion of maracanã from the C.Cup and that only a engineering miracle could change that.

As Stevie Wonder would say:

Heaven help us all, Heaven help us all, heaven help us all

Heaven help us, lord, hear our call when we call

It's worth remembering that Maracanã will be also used in the opening ceremony of the Olympics and Rio politicians are known for their incompetence...

Justice ruled out the workers srtike in Maracana and they are back on building the stadium.

According to the EMOP - The City Company for Public Services, the new deadline for Maracana is february 2013 and FIFA already allowed the new date, in a similar movement FIFA did with Corinthians stadium in Sao Paulo, allowing the Itaquera venue to be ready february 2014.

Sebb Blatter expresses concern over 2014 World Cup in Brazil

The head of Fifa Sepp Blatter has written to the President of Brazil to express concern over the country's preparations for the 2014 World Cup.

It comes amid growing tensions between football's world governing body and the Brazilian Government.

President Dilma Rousseff has been quoted in the Brazilian press as having demanded a "frank conversation" with Blatter to discuss the issues.

Fifa has repeatedly warned the the Brazilian organisers about work delays.

It now seems those concerns, surrounding the building of new stadiums and infrastructure around the tournament, extend to Fifa's legal demands on the host nation, with football's world governing body expecting to take total control of all aspects of the event.

One sticking point is believed to be the issue of ticket prices.

In Brazil students and elderly citizens get a 50 per cent discount for football matches and other forms of entertainment, and the Government wants the policy to be extended to the World Cup in 2014.

Another issue is Fifa's refusal to allow non-rights holders to show matches on television, with the Brazilians wanting local broadcasters to be given some limited access.
