baron-pierreIV
OK.. a 2-parter... 1. Of the IOC Sessions held in this continent (the second most) -- except for one, what is the common denominator? 2. What is the OTHER VERY IMPORTANT IOC gathering that this same continent STILL has to host? (Hint: this other Gathering has been hosted by France 4x already.) NOTE: A certain IOC staffer is excluded from answering this question.
Olympian2004
1.) It's the continent which has hosted the second most IOC sessions? Well, regarding that the Americas have hosted the second most Olympic Games, it has to be the Americas. And now I had to use Wikipedia: Is the common denominator that almost every American IOC session has been hosted by a North American country? And only one IOC session (Montevideo 1979) has been hosted by a South American country? 2.) Well, aren't there only two types of major IOC gatherings anyway: IOC Sessions and Olympic Congresses? So the other important gathering can only be the Olympic Congress. But France has already hosted the Olympic Congress five times (Paris 1894, Le Havre 1897, Paris 1906, Paris 1914 and Paris 1994). Fab, #1 - correct. Forgot all about Montevideo. But yes, most of the IOC Sessions held in North America all happened DURING an Olympic Games (in all 3 countries) -- so 1932, 1960, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1996, 2002 and 2010. The four IOC Sessions held in North America not coincidental with an Olympics were: 2 other times Mexico City (1953 and summer 2002), Puerto Rico (1989) and Guatemala (2007). #2 - Correct again. It's the IOC Congresses. So with Paris/France having hosted the most Congresses, a few Sessions and 3 Winter Games, maybe the IOC was loath to award them a 3rd Olympics for 2012? (So, they do spread their meetings and Games around.) Who is the IOC staffer? An ex-GBidder who used to be known as "cfjeremie..."

cfm Jeremie
Correct. It was simply called the Olympic Stadium. What was the FIRST (Summer) Olympic Stadium to see two Opening Ceremonies? Stockholm (1912 & Equestrian Games of 1956)?
baron-pierreIV
Stockholm (1912 & Equestrian Games of 1956)? Correcto!! Even though Stockholm was only the Equestrian events, nonetheless they held a FULL Opening Ceremony at the same stadium of 1912 with all the required IOC protocol and fanfare, the entire IOC officialdom in attendance and lighting of 3 torches/beacons. And the young Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip who were in town, were special guests of the Swedish royal family.* (I'd sure like to see full clips of that OC. Since most everyone was on horseback, in all the military uniforms, etc., it must've been very grand.) *So that might've been Queen Liz II's first SOGs in attendance. So, the Stockholm Olympic stadium indeed does precede LA Memorial Coliseum as the first summer stadium to have seen two OCs (even though the second one was rather limited to only one sport).
