American people think South America is a different continent- incorrect thought, but... Technically, there are 2 SEPARATE continents: North and South America. "Central" America is just a cultural sub-classification denoting the similar, Spanish/Indio-speaking countries of the region. THis is just like all of Asia from Turkey to Japan were once (and still are) subclassed into the Near East, the Middle East AND the Far East (the distance point of reference again being the distance from Europe). Mikel, culturally, the Americas, as we know them today, with their European-descended ruling classes (or even Asian in the case of Peru until recently) are only different in that the USA and Canada (and some of the Caribbean islands) were settled by mostly northern Europeans (therefore of the Protestant stripe) and were predominantly English- or Germanic-descended speaking -- whereas most everything else below that (except for the Guyanas and half the Caribbean) were settled by the Mediterranean/southern European powers (Spain, Portugal and the massive migrations of Italians to Argentina). Of course, don't forget the small handfuls of peaceful Japanese who settled in Brazil and Peru at the start of the last century, as opposed to the scores of Nazis who fled Europe in 1945 to try to find new identities in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. [Don't forget too that there are patches of the Franco world in this "New world" - Quebec, Louisiana, areas of Wisconsin and Vermont, St. Miquelon, Haiti and French Guyana, and parts of my living room. :wwww:] The point is, despite their common name - North AND South America are really 2 distinct worlds -- and they should not be lumped as one. [My crazy great-granfather, the original Baron, got lazy and just gave the Americas just one color in the Olympic symbol -- but that's a family secret.] But the differences of North and South make for a MORE INTERESTING world. baron-pierreIV
All my life I have studied America as an individual continent, and now, in the Foreign Affairs Ministry we talk of America as a unique continent... Yes, America, the country, is unique. The America(s) are BOTH North and South America and also called the 'Western Hemisphere.' (West of Europe.) (Central America & the Caribbean are subregions of North America. Panama, Belize, Nicaragua, etc., are still attached to the greater land mass of the USA, Canada and Mexico.) LATIN America is a cultural designation meaning the predominantly Catholic countries whose societies --as I said -- descended from the Latin cultures: Spanish, Portuguese and to a small extent, 1/3rd of the Argentinians who can trace their ancestry from Italy. So from those Mediterranean countries once part of the Roman empire whose written language was Latin -- from the region of Rome, Lazio or Latium. So stop being argumentative because I really don't know what we're arguing about?

The Caribbean is included in Central America and Central America is a separated subcontinent of North America and South America. The second paragraph is correct. KRATK
America is the name given to one of the five "traditional" continents (the others are Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania). But, in fact, there are only four continents: Eurafrasia, America, Australia and Antarctica. Southamerica and Northamerica are geological divisions of this continent, exactly as there are cultural subdivisiones like Latinamerica, Hispanoamerica or Angloamerica. So... is America one continent? If we think in the traditional idea, yes... Chile, Brazil and Haiti are American, exactly as USA, Greenland Bermuda and Canada are. The fact there are two different cultures (latin and anglo-saxon) isn't decisive about the discussion "America is one continent". Europe has more different cultures than America but we all believe there are one continent. Asia and Africa have more, but we still think them as just one continent each one. But, if we are going to talk about Olympics, we should care about this... for IOC, South America and North America will be different places, exactly as Middle East or Eastern Europe. Well, Mikel, I'm not in Spain so I don't have to follow what they teach you in Spain. Also, did you guys know that the USA, Brazil and Mexico's real full names are: (1) the United States of America; (2) Los Estados Unidos de Mexico; and (3) the United States of Brazil (or whatever it is in Portuguese). The AmericaS are the entire hemisphere. But when people say "America," the 1st context is the USA. Ever heard of "God Bless America"? "America the Beautiful." Maybe I should go to Spain and correct those textbooks, Mikel. But these are just names.
