I always look at the World champoinships just after an Olympic games in one of several ways:

- it allows the ones that have been held back for by the champions to come through and give a head start on the beginning of their quadrennial leading to the next olympics

- allows the Olympic medalists to give back to their National FFA by competing that one last time, so that it helps them start the next year with more places

- prove to the crowds that the Olympic performance was not a fluke (example of this is 1988 when Liz Manley broke through with the performance of her life at the Olympics and several weeks later, showed it was not a fluke by winning the silver at the Worlds)

Olympic bronze medallist Rochette to miss worlds

(AFP)

OTTAWA — Canadian figure skater Joannie Rochette, who won a bronze medal at the Vancouver Winter Olympics four days after her mother died of a heart attack, has withdrawn from next week's World Championships.

The emotional toll of the past few weeks has proven too much for Rochette to compete in the world field at Turin, Italy, according to a statement by Skate Canada that said Myriane Samson will take her spot.

Pang-Tong win world pairs title

TURIN, Italy — Olympic silver medalists Pang Qing and Tong Jian won their second pairs title at the World Figure Skating Championships on Wednesday.

Pang and Tong's strong routine to "Impossible Dream" easily secured the title, even though she doubled one of their side-by-side jumps. The Chinese pair finished with 211.39 points, more than six points ahead of two-time defending world champs Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany.

Russia's Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov, second after the short program, settled for a second straight bronze after she fell on their throw quadruple salchow — the hardest element attempted by any of the pairs.

Glad Joubert managed to land his jumps...too bad the same can't be said for poor Oda. What the hell happened to him? He missed every single one of his jumps! Still, rooting madly for the top three to remain the same after the FS. Although I wouldn't mind seeing Joubert getting the silver instead of PChan.

and Lysacek is probably retiring

Lysacek did say he want to compete in Sochi. maybe he's just taking advantage of his olympic glow before it fades.

I hope so. I think she's great.

so far no pressure on her but the next 4 years the pressure will be really intense as all the attention on her. she needs to mature as a skater, needs to be able to advance in terms if her technique which will be crucial and needs to develop her own brand of artistry.
