15th Fina World Championships In 2013

Recommended Posts

Oh, yeah! Barcelona 2013 :D :D :D

It's a pity these championships will not be qualifiers for Rio 2016, but it's really good for Spain to host them.

BTW, I think South Africa hadn't bid for the championships, Spain had bid but with Madrid, so FINA has chosen the city they have wanted.

Maglione said choosing Barcelona was in part meant to pay homage to former International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch, who was born in Barcelona and died there five months ago at age 89.

Oh! How beautiful!! Now say that to the IOC an award Madrid the Olympics in the year when JAS would have been 100  Even the opening ceremony could be the Friday of his 100th birthday...

According the "Real Federacion Espanola de Natacion" web page, the other candidates were: Hamburg, Moscow, Sydney and Seoul

Apparently, they will choose the same venues in 2013 as they did for the WCH in 2003:

Los Campeonatos del Mundo, además de la natación, también incluyen otras cuatro disciplinas que se disputarán en las mismas instalaciones que hace siete años: los saltos, en la Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc; la sincronizada, en la Bernat Picornell; el waterpolo, en la piscina del Club Natació Barcelona, y las aguas abiertas en el puerto.

And that includes also the Palau Sant Jordi where they installed a temporary swimming pool in 2003:

Diez años después, en el 2013, el Palau Sant Jordi volverá a engalanarse con una piscina olímpica de 50 metros de quita y pon y acogerá de nuevo a los mejores especialistas de natación, saltos, sincronizada, waterpolo y aguas abiertas, como ya hizo hace siete años.

It's great that the FINA World Championships return to Barcelona. The city hosted great WCH in 2003, in part due to using that stunning backdrop for the diving competitions (which was also used for the Olympic Games in 1992):

But at the same time, it's funny that Hamburg (according to German media reports) pulled out of the competition for the 2013 WCH due to the current financial problems of the city -- while Spain, which was hit harder by the financial crisis than Germany, gladly bid and won.

Well Spain hasn't had to provide liquidity to less-solvent members of the EU like Germany has.

Well Spain hasn't had to provide liquidity to less-solvent members of the EU like Germany has.

First of all (since you seem to allege that): Spain hasn't been provided liquidity by more-solvent EU states yet.

Secondly: Even if it had, that wouldn't mean that it's suddenly rich while the "donor countries" are suddenly poor.

Thirdly: The City of Hamburg already had severe financial problems before Germany helped the less-solvent Greece (so far the only EU country that got help from the other EU countries due to the financial crisis).

If a certain World Championship returns to the same city whose last time was 10 years before its next hosting, it's gonna get boring.

Not if the host city did an exceptionally good job the last time. Budapest, for example, hosted this year's European Swimming Championships -- just four years after it had the same honour. And frankly, it didn't bother me. Budapest was a good host in 2006, and it was a good host in 2010 as well.

Besides, this was a case of emergency and Barcelona obviously had the best bid of all cities which wanted to fill in.

That doesn't mean that Barcelona will now be a FINA World Championships host every ten years.

Barcelona to receive economic boost from hosting 2013 FINA World Championships

Barcelona should reap the economic rewards of hosting the FINA World Aquatics Championships next year, according to Mercè Vallès, the communications director of the competition's Organising Committee.

..

Vallès added that she also expects more than 80,000 bookings for hotels in Barcelona during the event, which is due to run from July 19 to August 4.

"Hosting an event of this magnitude almost always comes with economic benefits for the city," she said.

..

And next year's event will be useful not just for Barcelona to showcase its hosting skills, but also for Spain, which is hoping to win the right to bring the Olympics and Paralympics to Madrid for the first time in 2020.

Madrid is battling with Tokyo and Istanbul for the right to host the 2020 Games, with the decision set to be made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) a month after the World Aquatics Championships.

Barcelona 2013 will be using the same four venues that staged the 2003 FINA event and the swimming at the 1992 Olympics and Paralympics, situated within the city's Olympic ring.

..

A total of 2,500 athletes from 180 countries are expected to participate in the event next year.

Barcelona 2013 reaches milestone of 5,000 volunteer registrations

April 02, 2013
More than 5,000 people that seek to become a volunteer at Barcelona 2013 have already signed up for the 15th FINA World Championships. The unexpected milestone was reached only a little over six months after the volunteer recruitment campaign has kicked off last year. It is the biggest number of volunteers signing up for a major sporting event held in Barcelona since the memorable 1992 Olympic Games
The final number of volunteers to take part in the 15thFINA World Championships Barcelona 2013 (19 July to 4 August) will be slightly less than 5,000. Within the next couple of weeks, the second training session will take place in the Catalan capital, briefing the future volunteers about their roles in the different areas of the BCN 2013 Organizing Committee. The training sessions will be followed by personal interviews with volunteer coordinators to come up with the final team.
Members of the Barcelona 2013 Organizing Committee consider the work of volunteers indispensable to guarantee the success of an event of this magnitude. During the World Championships, which will be held at four competition venues, over 14,000 accredited people will have to be attended at different locations (airport, hotels, village, MPC and IBC, etc.).
The different areas of the BCN Organizing Committee to be covered by volunteers are accreditations, transport, competition, media, marketing, protocol, ceremonies, technology, volunteers and medical services.

In don't know if this is relevant, but Central American countries will send a maximun of 4 athletes per gender. The final list of qualified athletes will be published on May.

All countries that dont have an athlete meeting minimum standards are allowed to send up to 4 athletes.

The countdown begins: 100 days to go until Barcelona 2013

April 10, 2013

BCN2013_100dias%20(2).jpg

Today, 10 April, it will mark exactly 100 days before the start of the 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013. Celebrating the centennial number, which stands for the start of the final countdown, the major sporting event is just around the corner. Event organizers want to invite everybody involved in the World Championships to kick-starting the big aquatic event

The Barcelona 2013 Local Organizing Committee informs that, starting today, there are only 100 days to go until the start of the 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013 (19 July to 4 August). To celebrate this big occasion, a huge number 100 was formed with the help of hundreds of volunteers at the Plaza Carles Buïgas. The spectacle was recorded.

With only 100 days to go until Barcelona 2013, the organization of the project is going smoothly and all deadlines are being met. Next week, coinciding with an official visit of the members of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) to the Catalan capital, the last important steps on the road to the World Championships will be discussed.

Barcelona 2013 is on track to becoming the greatest FINA World Championships in history.

Pretty presumptuous to make such a statement as an organiser, isn't it? A bit more humility wouldn't hurt the (possible) success of the World Championships at all.

But okay, who gets such super hot hunks as models for their commercials, probably has his head up in the clouds quite fast... ;)
