Durban Sandshark
Nobody is surprised that CTV's 1400-strong Canada's Olympic Host Broadcast Media Consortium's esteemed coverage of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics after all the 13 Gemini Awards noms was going to dominate the sports categories for holding the top 5 alltime Canadian TV events. Well at the Geminis in Toronto last week, it didn't sweep the sports awards that it was nominated in, but CTV won 7 of those 13 nominations for Vancouver: Best Live Sporting Event (a first each for Executive VP of Broadcasting Rick Chisholm and 25-year vet Gord Cutler), Best Sportscaster/Anchor (James Duthie, a back-to-back Gemini win for him), Best Sports Play-By-Play Announcer for Chris Cuthbert's "golden goal" call, Best Sports Analyst for Catriona Lemay Doan, Best Sports Feature Segment (the Closing Essay), Best Sports Analysis or Commentary (Superbodies), and Outstanding Technical Achievement in Digital Media (Alon Marcovici). A potential eighth will come if Olympic Prime Time Host Brian Williams wins Best Sports Host or Interviewer of a Sports Program at the 25th Gemini Gala on November 13. Durban Sandshark
I have to say that Globe and Mail columnist Stephen Brunt's closing essay on CTV on the final day is definitely one of the best Olympic TV pieces anywhere. Thanks to YouTube, non-Canadian residents can see it again and again. It's worth bringing out here on these boards again in celebration. Can't argue with the choices. TSN, a member of the consortium, earned their two for IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championship Gold Medal game and TSN Hockey Insider. Oh, did I mention that mogulist Alex Bildeau, for being the first Olympic gold medalist for Canada on its home soil, got the privilege to ?V (formerly TQS) no longer posesses a sports department for years; all of the French-Canadian sports coverage is covered by RDS. Durban Sandshark
More developments occurred from the host broadcaster CTV in terms of its Olympics personnel. In addition to winning the 7 Sports Geminis for its Vancouver 2010 coverage, a couple of weeks ago Alon Marcovici, the CTV's Executive VP of Digital Media, was named Executive of the Year for developing its digital strategy of multiplatform online Olympic coverage from the Canadian New Media Awards that got at least 251 million hits. I would've liked for it to be multilingual online to live up more to the 22 languages covered, among a few other things. Maybe it will come London. Also, CTV, as a member of Canada's Olympic Host Broadcast Consortium, won the Best Cross-Platform Project Award for producing its "immerse news and informative" up-to-the-minute website portal. CTV was the only network to win the awards there. CTV wins two 2010 Canadian New Media Awards In addition to the seven Geminis, CTV's Brian Williams, the dean of Canada's Olympic broadcasting with 13 Games under his belt since Montreal 1976, adds another one for the network with his Gemini win as Best Host or Interviewer for Sports Program or Sportscast. Making it a record eight, also the same amount for Williams. CTV's Brian Williams Wins Eight for CTV's Vancouver Olympic Coverage You know those two CTV British Columbia news anchors that you saw on those CTV promos here linked from YouTube, Bill Goode and Pamela Martin? They're following Lloyd Robertson's lead in steeping down together from their evening lead anchor posts (the CTV Evening News at Six), albeit much earlier than him, at the end of the year. Trivia: Pamela Martin is actually from Detroit living in her adopted BC. Both came from Global (formerly BCTV) a decade ago already established and decorated with awards. Bill Goode and Pamela Martin step down as CTV BC co-anchors But it didn't take long for CTV to announce their successors: Tamara Taggart and Mike Killeen, also involved in the CTV Vancouver Olympic broadcast, were appointed the next day. Durban Sandshark
Found this out when I watched the on-demand replay of the Grey Cup as I write this: CTV and TSN will air a one-year anniversary retrospective of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics on Saturday, February 12, bringing back a lot of memories for Canadians. As part of the consortium up to 2012 for the Canadian Olympic TV rights, this is not surprising. RDS surely will do the French language version. Also, the Canadian Broadcasting Standards Council ruled that CTV was not improper or wrong in showing footage of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritshvilli's (sp?) fatal practice crash after an investigation, when it didn't know yet that he was dead. Durban Sandshark
A CTV press release on the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics One Year Anniversary Special and the 17 Days doc coming just days away on CTV, TSN. I think this is a good time for CTV to release the full opening and closing ceremonies on DVD and Blu-ray in both languages plus all the other languages used in them and have the docs and more on the torch relay (among other broadcasted Olympic material) as the featurettes, since the first two are butchered in. Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics One Year Anniversary and 17 Days Press Release I agree. Would be a good time to release, in full, the opening and closing ceremonies. A Torch Relay special would be great too - should've been in their big 5-disc DVD set, but sadly no. Would've been great to see and hear some of the stories from the relay. Durban Sandshark
Cue the "I Believe/J'Imagine" theme one more time. Durban Sandshark
I find it very interesting that only CTV and TSN/TSN2 aired the two Vancouver specials over the weekend and not the other members of the Canada Olympic Host Broadcast Consortium like Rogers Sportsnet, OMNI, APTN, RDS/RDS Info Sports/V, OLN, and ATN. No press release mentions of a French version, of which I'm sure Vancouver captivated the French Canadian contingent just as much, as far as I know. And that's not all: last week on CTV, Olympic legend Clara Hughes discussed battling mental heath issues as Bell's Let's Talk spokesperson on the subject. Plus, Canada AM takes a look back with a few of the Canadian Vancouver Olympic medalists like Alex Bilodeau, Jenn Heil, and Marianne St-Gelais. http://www.ctvmedia.ca/ctv/releases/release.asp?id=13458&yyyy=2011 http://www.ctvmedia.ca/ctv/releases/release.asp?id=13478&yyyy=2011
Durban Sandshark
In case you were wondering what was the music piece for the OBSV broadcast intro, it was "City of Ice" composed by Rob May and Simon Hill. APTN brought in five broadcast television students to to Winnipeg to help out hands-on in the network's maiden foray into Olympic broadcasting from February 1-28, 2010, because of the longstanding relationship between Confederation College and APTN. I'll submit more next week on them including the videos of their experience http://www.confederationc.on.ca/node/2554 While we're talking about the Aboriginal People's Television Network and Vancouver, I had to remind myself when I read this Winnipeg Free Press APTN Vancouver coverage article that many of the people calling the games in their native regional languages were actually calling them from monitors live from their Portage Avenue studios, like the hosts themselves, at the APTN's headquarters in Winnipeg, home to Canada's largest native Canadian community. And not in the Vancouver venues. Only former Canadian Olympian Waneek Horn-Miller was based in Vancouver during the Games, not Charles Clement, Rick Harp, or Mike Beauregard. Surely some people preserved the coverage in the various languages on select events because of the regional aspect of it, and it would be nice if they can be used for a possible fan's CTVglobemedia-Rogers DVD set. Even calling for submissions for Olympic broadcast music up to January 31, 2010. http://www.aboriginalmusic.ca/news/announcements/3982 APTN Kids' Qannik (the polar bear) and Cassidy discuss the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics to the kids. A video does exist of the APTN sportscasters preparing to call the Olympics events in their 10 languages on the APTN website, but not yet on Youtube. Was that documentary or featurette regarding the TV coverage that was originally supposed to be on the CTV/RDS Vancouver 5-DVD set before it was scrapped from the present incarnation altogether eventually morphed into the 17 Days documentary? If so, maybe it was better this way, and it should get a DVD release as part of the ceremonies DVD with perhaps the torch relay and maybe the Difference Makers hosted by Rick Hansen and Alex Despatie. We can also get the 9-hour torch relay Vancouver coverage from CTV BC in this. Like to know more about ATN's and OMNI's coverage. Still studying the TV schedule overall. Durban Sandshark
Interesting that the CTV/TSN Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic retrospective programs didn't contact Plenarius, the guy who created the Iggy Heard Round The World on YouTube utilizing several calls of the golden goal from around the world for its use, but it did use something similar for it. In fact, he says he got an email from the BBC hockey commentator from that call, complimenting him on that.
Durban Sandshark
Carcake over at YouTube took a lot of videos of CTV's Vancouver 2010 coverage that were posted now that the year exclusivity has elasped up there. For many of us like me who wanted to see some good Vancouver Olympic coverage with a Canadian bent were out of luck because of territorial restrictions, like the Brian Williams meets Brian Williams piece. But we get a chance now! I won't link one by one. But instead have them from his channel link. You will have to scroll down and then click in some portions though as he adds non-Olympic stuff. There's some CBC Torino stuff in for good measure. Carcake3's Channel
Durban Sandshark
Found another, albeit more brief, news article regarding APTN's Vancouver daily 10-hour coverage ambitions from First Nations Voice. The inexperienced APTN Olympic sportscasters had to really lucky to have immense access to the HD screens and state of the art studios in Winnipeg using the host feed. Only on seven days of the APTN's Vancouver coverage was there any diversification of languages depending on the three APTN region Canadians lived in to accomodate better the 11 Aboriginal languages used. North's coverage ranged from Yukon, Nunavut, Northwest Territories, small patches of northern Quebec, and Newfoundland (minus Labrador), West was from BC to western Ontario, and East's coverage went from Ontario to the Maritimes' Labrador. The seven events where the multiple language feeds were at work that I found at the still-active APTN Vancouver 2010 page were: Opening Ceremony (West: Cree-also for national HD coverage, North: Inuktitut, East: Mohawk) Ladies' Moguls--where it was expected Canada's first ever gold on home soil would take place (regional languages were all TBA) Women's Hockey Gold Medal Game (West and North/HD: Cree, East: Mi'kmaq) Men's Hockey Semifinal--definitely a Canada one (West/HD and East: Cree, North: Inuktitut) Men's Curling Final--Canada vs. Norway (West: Ojibway, East/HD and North: Cree) Men's Hockey Gold Medal Game and Closing Ceremony (West/HD: Cree, North: Inuktitut, East: Mi'kmaq) First Nations Voice: APTN's Vancouver coverage Cassidy and Qannik return for another APTN Kids Olympic segment. This one centering around packing items that Olympians might take with them. Or in this case, Cassidy. Almost all of the Canadian Vancouver Olympic medalists gather at the CTV Olympic studio admiring each other at the IBC on the last day of the Olympic competition and later join composer Stephan Moccio and his piano performing "I Believe". This had to have been on CTV Olympic Morning or Olympic Daytime, since it was hours away from the Sidney Crosby and the guys famously added to the final tally in the most eagerly anticipated event of them all there and would positively define their Olympics. Durban Sandshark
Lloyd Robertson, the co-host for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for CTV's Vancouver 2010 with Brian Williams and Catriona LeMay Doan, signed off for the final time as CTV National News anchor yesterday after joining CTV 35 years ago this month from the CBC. Lisa Laflamme, who appears in the exclusive interview with convicted media mogul Conrad Black early on, succeeds him on Monday. Here is his final CTV National News newscast in its entirety with tributes from Stephen Harper, Nycole Turmel, and Bob Rae with his final sendoff. 30 years after Walter Cronkite did his on CBS News, just think. Durban Sandshark
For the likes of ESPN, FOX Sports, Seven Network Australia, ITV, Channel 4, Canal +, TVNZ, Toronto Star, CBC, Reuters, USA Today, CBS, AP, etc., the BC International Media Centre was the place to be reporting the Vancouver Winter Olympics when you're banned from even the International Broadcasting Center. Given how beautiful Vancouver is, that facility even helped generated tourism in BC. They too needed a place to go for a media hub instead of, say, an apartment in Torino (like what happened to ESPN back then). London and Sochi were taking notes. http://www.sportsfeatures.com/olympicsnews/story/49208/bc-international-media-centre-contributed-to-the-success-of-canadian-tourism

Durban Sandshark
Yes different both Williams' had a segment at the Olympics: That very much is true (BTW, the video above is blocked here in the US and likely in other countries)! Wonder will CTV's Brian Williams will pay a visit to NBC's Olympic headquaters in London and return the favor. Gotta see that! Remember that discussion ealier about how some Americans who live close to the US-Canadian border expressed disappointment over not seeing any Olympics coverage on CBC since it no longer had the Canadian rights to it (until CBC and Bell Media gets the rights starting with Sochi 2014)? Well actually, if you lived in places Seattle, Detroit, and Buffalo, for example, you could see CTV now that it has been on digital free-to-air TV. For Seattle residents, they could see CTV Olympic action on 32.1 with CIVT-DT, British Columbia's only full-fledged CTV affiliate. That is, I'm assuming, they get a good reception from it. But it only identifies itself as CTV (or CTV Two if it is formerly a Channel A affiliate) since Industry Canada rarely enforces the regulation to go by the call letters.
